Jack Persyn, Georgia Middle School Student, Suspended For Reporting He Accidentally Brought Knife To School (VIDEO)

Jack Persyn, 13, was in chess club before class when he discovered a short knife in the bag he brought to his Georgia school, station WXIA reports.

Persyn's aunt had bought the bag from a yard sale, and gave the purchase to the teen without checking inside first, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports. After Persyn told his Lanier Middle School teacher that he accidentally brought the weapon to class, the teen received four days of in-school suspension, a punishment his father Bill Persyn says is excessive.

"There was never a safety issue," Persyn told WXIA. "No harm was done. It was a genuine honest mistake, yet he got pulled out of class for four days. I can see a one-hour detention if they had to do something, but this is nonsensical."

AJC's reporter Maureen Downey contacted the Gwinnett schools, and received this statement from director of media relations Jorge Quintana:

"Gwinnett County Public Schools does not have a zero-tolerance policy. We look at situations individually and take appropriate disciplinary action. While we are not at liberty to confirm or discuss the discipline this young man faces, we know our administrators followed procedures as stated in the Student Conduct Code.

The rules call for more severe action against those students who do not self-report weapons they have in their possession. It’s important to understand that these rules are in place, in part, to prevent future incidents and rule violations. Without these rules in place, others could easily claim they were not aware of what they had in their possession."

According to a report by WFIE, the knife measured 1.5 inches long.

Here is the problem with our school system! Students don't want to get in trouble by doing the RIGHT thing, but guess what, if he had not SELF REPORTED, he would have been in trouble for that! I was always taught, "Honesty is the best policy!" Apparently, there is no best policy in our school systems! No wonder our kids just let the chips fall as they might! Just like girl trying to report bullying, who then got in trouble herself..............REALLY? What is wrong with this PICTURE!

The boy was in chess club for goodness sake, wasn't that a clue in and of itself?

Oh please, if kid had bad record, was trouble maker etc Icould see it. Now we have these liberal knee jerk idiots running schools making these blanket "enforcement" rules rather than looking at each case individually.
I took my pocket knife to school once, for got it was in jeans I had worn Sunday, so I asked my metals shop teacher,, he told me to just keep it in my pocket and not pull it out. Simple.
But then I also, even while bullied in school and threatened by officials if Igot into more trouble b y being bullied, I would get kicked out of school. So I told the principle that next time Igot bullied the bully would be doubled over in hall way in pain, if I was getting in trouble it would be for defending my self.
They would seem to do anything to the bullies, had one guy try to bully me after that, if we had a football team I could have been place kicker that day.
Got sent to office,,,told principle AND superintendent same thing again,,,got bullied, they didnt stop it, if Iwas getting kicked out for being bullied, then so be it. The guy I defended myself against 6 ft 2in, me, 5 ft 7in maybe, he was musclebound athlete, me not so much. I turned and went to class and told teacher what had happened, she didnt eve n ask for note.

I can usually understand the reasons behind zero tolerance, but this seems ridiculous.

Good people are out of work while idiots and psychopaths like Gwinett County administrators are employed. The overriding message in the story is that life isn't fair, and we're taking money to do our damndest to keep it that way.

Just imagine.... A man buys a used car. He is cleaning it out afet buying it and finds a stash of heroin in the trunk. Being a good, law abiding citizen, he takes it to the police, ANd they arrest him for possession. The judge reassures him that since he turned himself in he is only going to get a $250 fine instead of prison time. That they know he tried to do the right thing but they just CAN'T let it slide. That about sums up what happened here. Sheer lunacy.

This just teaches kids that doing the right thing won't be good. That you should lie when you could be doing the right thing. It teaches kids to avoid conflicts by being dishonest.
Any kid who knows about this now, won't likely go to the teacher in a similar situation.
What an immoral, shameless idiotic principal...

This is what happens when you impost black and white values.

No the teachers are not to act irrational and should not be teaching kids to think rational.

This is just bad publicity for the school and state of Georgia.

Their reasoning is completely moronic. "Other students can just say they accidentally bought it to school and get away with having a weapon."

It's not like that at all. This is an honest student turning a weapon in. The situation their claim would apply to is if a student had been caught with a weapon and had then claimed that they had accidentally bought it to school.

They overreacted. No wonder why people are losing their faith in the public school system these days.

That's what he gets for being a snitch. Next time he'll know better, I bet.

And the Teachers' unions wonder why more and more people either home school their kids or send them to Catholic school.
