Elton John To Write First Book, Writing About AIDS Crisis

Elton John Book

01/ 9/12 08:58 AM ET   AP

LONDON — Elton John is writing his first book, a personal account of the AIDS crisis.

The musician says "Love is the Cure: Ending the Global Aids Epidemic" will include memories of friends who died of AIDS-related illnesses, including Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

British publisher Hodder & Stoughton says the book will be published in July along with an audio book read by the British pop star. The U.S. publisher is Little, Brown.

Proceeds will go to the Elton John's AIDS Foundation.

John said Monday the book would ask why more is not being done to cure the disease.

He said AIDS "is a disease that must be cured not by a miraculous vaccine, but by changing hearts and minds, and through a collective effort to break down social barriers."

This is not going to be a popular comment.

I wish that "love" was indeed a viable cure. Unfortunately, the only cure for AIDS is responsible personal behavior. According to the CDC, over 80% of cumulative diagnoses through 2009 (US only) were the result of some combination of male-to-male sexual contact and injection drug use. Heterosexual contact (read "unprotected contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection") accounts for an additional 18%.

Irresponsible personal behavior, heterosexual and homosexual, is the only statistically significant reason for the continued prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

He is so talented. I love his music, and he is a gay pioneer. He came out when it was not as accpepted as it is now.

Fantastic work and giving!

Can't wait. Since he's recording the audio book himself, we'll probably wind up with the paper and audio copy. All for an important cause, too.

Does it involve Rush Limbaugh?! Since that stunt at Limbaugh's wedding, I can't take anything Sir Elton says seriously.

And I used to be such a fan (of Elton's that is).

I'd love to read his own personal story, which I'm sure would heavily include all of his amazing work in the AIDS community.

I think so as well. He seems to be the most grounded of all the singers of his day.

Is he planning to run for some political office too? Lately, this seems like the first step.

John might want to answer why he would play and sing at Rush Limbaugh's, 3rd, 4th, whatever wedding.

Limbaugh is an enemy of anyone who is a clear thinker, he is as mean as a junkyard dog, and folks like him aided by their wide exposure, add to the fear terrifed teens and others face grappling with their sexuality.

Elton John is vastly wealthy, he does not need Limbaugh's dirty money.

My wife and my interest in him and his music ended with that performance.

Elton John has some unappealing personality traits. I thought his publicity w h ..0 r .1ng when Princess Diane died was unseemly. He also decided that Eminem was his great friend when Eminem needed help with his h0m.0..ph0b1c image and John needed some publicity. Believe it or not, John has also had severe financial problems because of his unbelievably extravagant spending. I don't think John got any good publicity from the Limbaugh wedding - I think he did it just for the $1M payday because he needs the cash flow.

Glad to see someone who's earned all that money doing something useful for others with it.
