Despite Low Migration, GOP Candidates Still Rely On Enforcement-Only Talking Points

As the immigration debate heats up in the Republican campaign, some experts argue that illegal immigration rates are actually cooling down.

"The Mexican immigration boom of the 1990s and early 2000s is unlikely to be repeated ever again," Shannon K. O'Neil, an expert on Latin American studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote last week.

Despite all indications that unauthorized migration is not the problem it once was, GOP candidates carry on with the politically amenable "more border enforcement" mantra while remaining vague on the harder question: What do we do with the 11.2 million undocumented immigrants already here?

Doug Massey, head of the Princeton's Mexican Migration Project, says that for the first time in decades, illegal immigration has actually reached a net zero.

"For the first time in 60 years, the net traffic has gone to zero and is probably a little bit negative," he said in an interview with the New York Times.

After a rapid immigration spike, experts still debate what factors contributed to the fast decline in Latino immigration in recent years. O'Neil of the Council on Foreign Relation says that increased economic prosperity in Mexico, shrinking Mexican families, and increased criminal activities on the border are among the reasons given for the swift fall. Some also attribute lower immigration rates to new tougher border patrol strategies and higher deportation rates. However, the dip seems to have started far before the nation's harsher state immigration laws (like those in Alabama and Arizona) came into effect.

Despite the immigration decline, Latino population increased 43 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to Census data -- making Latinos America's largest minority group. And for the first time since the 1970's, native births account for the majority of Mexican-American population growth. In a study released in 2009, the Pew Hispanic Center concluded that one of every four children born in the U.S. today is of Hispanic heritage.

As immigration rates fell, Republican candidates ratcheted up their anti-immigrant talk, pledging aggressive measures to secure the border.

Herman Cain suggested installing an electrified fence and placing armed troops with "real bullets" on the border, Michele Bachmann called for "a secure double fence", and Perry pledged to send more Air Force Predator drones on enforcement missions over the Mexican-American border.

Rick Santorum said in a September debate that, "until we build that border, we should neither have storm troopers come in and throw people out of the country nor should we provide amnesty."

He said "we'll have that discussion" of what do with the 11.2 million after a wall across the entire border is built.

Every employer should be required to use E-Verify before they can hire someone.

Without the draw of a job no illegal would bother to come. They would do it legally.
09:15 AM on 02/04/2012
There are over a billion people in the world living on less than $2 a day.

They can not all come to America.

Too many people and too few jobs.

We need to balance population and resources to support the population.

"After a rapid" ILLEGAL, "immigration spike, experts still debate what factors contributed to the fast decline in Latino immigration in recent years"
I put the word illegal in the sentence.

Let's stay honest. The vast majority of American citizens have no problem with LEGAL IMMIGRATION. This is pretty common knowledge. The problem is with illegal aliens who are costing the tax payer billions. The open border groups, La Raza, bleeding heart libs don't want to talk about that...they want to use euphemisms like undocumented worker to soften the empact of what the problem is. It is out of control and ICE has to get operational control over it.

Yup...I really dont know why the rest of the world is not protesting it.....People standing in line around the world..To get there shots...get schooled in english....ge schooled in a trade....Work hard and do what they need to get here legaly..And all illegal people are just stepping on the rest of the world who wants a chance to live here ... they want to be a USA citizen ...Not some one who runs across expect everything for nothing...wavs the country flag that he hated so much he risked being shot getting across.......I understand its a bad place down there sometimes...And i dont blame them for wanting a better life..But the ones runing across the border are not all good people...And with out a back ground checks we have no idea what criminals are coming across and already here.

Check this news commentary. We have to get operational control and enforce the laws we already have on the books - period. The laws exist and we are a country of laws.

Unless you are a Native American Indian you've nothing to say about immigrants, we all are one way or another, this country is been build and support by immigrants over the years.
What should I say to somebody who is celebrating Saint Patric's day wearing a shirt saying "Kiss me I'm Irish" or "Don't mess with me I'm Italian", is this what is all about , be proud of your family background but hate immigrants, that's the wrong idea of been an American.

You are correct. The operative word is immigrants.
But American citizens have EVERYTHING to say about illegal aliens.

There is a global push back against illegal immigration and much of it is coming from the EU who has experienced the downside of open borders first hand: -

~ Greece is building a border fence to keep out illegals

~ New rule allows immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants from Italy. http://tinyurl.com/3gsm97s

http://www.theafricanews.com/immigration-news/italy/2720-new-rule-allows-immediate-expulsion-of-illegal-immigrants-from-italy.html

~ Despite EU free travel arrangements, Denmark on Friday approved a decision to re-establish permanent customs checkpoints at its borders, removing the last hurdle to a plan aimed at stopping crime and illegal immigration. http://tinyurl.com/3cvbw2m

~ Holland is now making illegals pay for their own plane ticket and cost of shipping their belongings when they are deported. If they do not have the money their employer or family are charged. The costs have to be paid before they are released to be sent home. http://tin¬yurl.com/3l97oa7

There is a drive underway to expel 1.4 million Illegal Immigrants from South Africa http://tinyurl.com/3exjhry

~ Britain is ramping up efforts to deport illegals:

~~Cameron wins a victory to send illegal immigrants back to their country of entry into the EU, and reinforces intent to deport illegal Mid Eastern, Africans and Libyans flooding into the EU through Italy and South East Europe. http://tinyurl.com/3cp7z3d http://tinyurl.com/5up6xfg

NOW that the inflow of illegal aliens has diminished, we must put in place all the necessary steps to ensure that the nation will never again, go through this horrible invasion.

1. E-VERIFY nationwide
2. No sanctuary cities.
3. No automatic citizenship for children of ilegal aliens.
... 4. All illegal aliens must go back to their countries and apply at the American embassy, and go thru the process, just like everyone e...lse. Why would they leave voluntarily?... because by coming forward, they'll get a 6 months period of legal status, to put their matters in order, also ICE would waive the 10 years penalty period, as long as they go back voluntarily and get to the back of the line.
5. ISSUANCE OF TEMPORARY CARDS FOR TEMPORARY WORKERS and increased of temporary workers to work the fields and the jobs that are temporarily needed. Such temporary workers sign an agreement, indicating that any children that they may have while in American territory, will not be born an American citizen but will hold the citizenship of their parent (temporary worker).
6. SHARING COST OF REPATRIATION we need to share the cost of deportation of illegal aliens, with the country of origin of such an illegal alien. if we force the Mexican gov't to share (50%-50%) the cost of deporting their citizens back, I can assure you, they would stop their citizens from crossing the border on the Mexican side.

The Netherlands makes the illegal, their family and/or employer pay! Hit them where it hurts.

100,000 illegals (25%) left AZ within months of SB1070 at their own cost. I think Mexico is dreading a sudden 10% population explosion and what it will do to their unemployment?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with enforcement of American law?
it is those who avoid enforcement of law that should be prohibited from running for office.

Illegal immigration rates may be "cooling down" at the moment but this reprieve is but a blip on the radar compared to the steady deluge of impoverished Third World plebes that surged across our borders for decades. We need to take advantage of the lull in the subversion of our sovereignty and gird ourselves for the next wave of undocumented aliens. Until the developing world gets a grip on its irresponsible birthrates we shall have to remain vigilant.

Liberals say that lower levels of illegal immigration proves that further enforcement is no longer necessary......

....missing completely the obvious fact that that enforcement is the reason illegal immigration levels are lower.
05:52 PM on 01/13/2012
The "obvious" fact of increased enforcement is much less obvious as you think: IT IS OUR ECONOMY which drives immigrants (legal and illegal), along with many skilled and educated U. S. citizens abroad, where they enjoy better pay, full benefits and more humane societies, while the GOP money hungry and corrupt "patriots" lead our country downhill. Wake up, we already live in impoverished Third Country World (unless you belong to 1%).

what to do with 12 million undocumented inmigrants already here??????? well why not to enforce SB1070 law in all 50 states and let them autodeport themselves.
05:27 AM on 01/11/2012
You see this will never happen in California not even parts of that law California has always been the state with most Hispanics in the U.S. almost half of the population is hispanic.SB1070 won' even be mention except by those ignorant minority anti-immagration group they're always going to be some of those somewhere....lol

You have to love HuffPo for not ever using ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION OR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT in any of it's stories although anyone with an IQ above 50 knows exactly what this is all about. Once again, we have a major media outlet shilling for the illegals and their cause which is to enter and stay in America while basically thumbing their noses at our laws. Why would HP do such a terrible thing?
Why does HP hate America so much that it would promote the illegal's agenda and thereby ENCOURAGE the breaking of America's immigration laws? One can only shake one's head and wonder.

We are not.

First we are concerned with illegal immigrants, we welcome legal immigrants with open arms.

Second we are concerned with all illegal immigrants no matter their skin color.
