The Basics
Nestled in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley lies
, a member-owned resort open to the public. Also known as Bryce Basye, this popular vacation destination offers everything from skiing and snowboarding to the nation's first mountain tubing run. Bryce Resort is an easy two-hour drive from Washington, D.C., a three-hour drive from Baltimore or Richmond and only 11 miles west of Interstate 81.
The Mountain
Located on the eastern side of Great North Mountain, Bryce Resort has a
of 1,750 feet, a base elevation of 1,250 feet and a 500-foot vertical drop. The resort's southern location and low base elevation limits the average natural snowfall to only 30 inches, making Bryce's 100 percent snowmaking capability a real plus. Lights cover 90 percent of the terrain to allow plenty of night skiing.
Trails And Lifts
Bryce Resort has more than 25 acres of skiable terrain. There are
equally divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced runs, with the longest run roughly 3,500 feet in length. There are seven lifts (two doubles and five carpet). Bryce Resort also offers an 800-foot long tubing lane for snow tubing. Beginner skiers will enjoy runs specifically designed for them, such as Redeye, which widens toward the bottom, allowing for an easier trek.
In The News
Bryce Resort offers a variety of
for skiers of all ages. There is the PSIA Member School, a SKIwee Program and a NASTAR and USSA racing program. The Horst Locher Ski School located within the resort gets kudos for its patience and success at teaching first-time skiers. Another unique feature at Bryce Resort is the Shenandoah County Library (complete with public Internet access), and a private airport located on the premises.
Cost
The range in
at this member-owned resort is extensive. Fees for nonmembers vary, depending on age, day of the week and time of visit. Eight-hour Flex Tickets are available for $30 to $50, and four-hour Flex Tickets for $20 to $35. Carpet lift/slope use is usually between $5 and $20. First-time ski and snowboard packages are also available.
Apres-Ski
Bryce Resort offers several choices for apres-ski needs. Dinner at
provides a relaxed and charming atmosphere. The
