Cordova, Alaska Snow Presents Challenges To Residents

Cordova Alaska Snow

DAN JOLING   01/10/12 09:25 PM ET   AP

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Alaska community blitzed by nearly 15 feet (4.5 meters) of snow was hit by another storm Tuesday and a new problem – a shortage of shovels.

A spokesman for the city of Cordova said officials had tried Anchorage, Fairbanks and other cities and finally turned to a manufacturer for a special order.

"It's ironic, isn't it? The state of Alaska – you'd think they'd be ahead of the game. It's those logistical things you just don't plan on, or you don't think is going to be an issue," said Allen Marquette by phone from the city on the east side of Prince William Sound.

The snow-weary city of 2,200 was promised new shovels to be manufactured Thursday and delivered two days later – but it will be too late for the "couple more feet" of snow that touched down Tuesday, accompanied by winds of up to 40 mph (64 kph) and gusts to 55 mph (89 kph).

The latest storm hit much of south-central Alaska. Avalanches along the Seward Highway closed the only route south out of Alaska's largest city, cutting off Anchorage from neighborhoods to the south in Girdwood.

Department of Transportation spokesman Rick Feller said the department followed up with an even larger induced avalanche using explosives fired from a military-style howitzer.

"That showed there was a lot of pent-up energy, and it's been released," he said. The highway will remain closed until noon Wednesday.

The storm knocked out power to parts of Homer on the Kenai Peninsula. Drifts accumulated to 7 feet (2 meters), Feller said, and the city put out an advisory to boat owners that 16 inches (40 centimeters) of snow could accumulate and boats should be cleared.

KMXT-radio in Kodiak said flights to the island city had been canceled and three boats sank in local harbors from the weight of snow. In Valdez, the terminus of the trans-Alaska pipeline, forecasters issued a blizzard warning through Wednesday afternoon, with winds to 45 mph (72 kph) and accumulations of up to 17 inches (43 centimeters) of snow on the Richardson Highway at Thompson Pass, the road access out of the community.

Cordova, a fishing community famed for wild Copper River salmon, may have been hardest hit. Since Nov. 1, the city has received 176 inches (447 centimeters) of snow and 44.24 inches (112 centimeters) of rain, at times increasing the weight of the snow as it piled up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) high on roofs.

Accumulations on roofs and walls damaged four commercial buildings and two homes, Marquette said.

The threat of such collapses prompted the evacuation of an apartment complex, where weight on the roof jammed doorways and windows, making it a fire hazard, Marquette said. The Red Cross has turned the city recreation center into an emergency shelter.

Dealing with the white stuff has turned into a near military operation. City, state and federal authorities set up a command center to organize its response to the snow emergency. One task: deciding who gets their roof or entryway shoveled first. The community set up a call-in number to report access problems or roof hazards.

"We're sending out teams to assess," Marquette said. "Everybody thinks it's serious, but you have to go out and assess to prioritize ones that need it the most."

The Alaska National Guard has sent dozens of soldiers, mostly to wield shovels. The U.S. Coast Guard contributed at least 20 personnel to clean docks and help maintain heavy equipment.

A "tremendous outreach" of volunteers helped their neighbors clear roofs or clear paths to buildings, Marquette said. But as they perform the backbreaking work of moving snow by hand, they're running through shovels.

"Part of it is, the light fluffy snow is no more," Marquette said. "It's the heavier, wetter stuff. A lot of these shovels are plastic. These are big strong people, and so you're bound to have some equipment that gets damaged and broken. So we need to keep replenishing and repairing and getting those back out on the line so they can get the work done."

The city was looking for ice chisels, snow shovels and snow scoops that push snow.

Coast Guardsman cleared docks at one Cordova harbor and worked on another Tuesday. National Guard soldiers had concentrated on city buildings such as the museum, library and high school and "put a good dent into the situation," Marquette said.

Danger from the storm Tuesday kept volunteers off roofs but soldiers worked throughout the day, Marquette said. Shoveling can create a small avalanche on the building, he said.

The Renda is between 15-20 miles from Nome! They will have to make the last couple of miles alone, as it will be too shallow for the Healy. Alaska thanks you, USCG!

Cordova is frozen over. and will remain so for the next 7-10 days. People continue to chip out of the ice. There have been no fatalities due to the storm, thank God! They got about an inch of snow on top of the ice.

The temp isn't expected to get above freezing for the next 7-10 days, so the new snow is covering ice. It's a very serious situation. The Renda is continuing to make VERY slow progress towards Nome.

The temp. isn't expected to get above freezing for the next 7-10 days, so the ice that formed when yesterday's slush froze over is being covered by more snow. It's a very dangerous situation. The Renda is making VERY slow progress towards Nome.

The temp got into the mid-thirties today, so some of the snow turned into slush. Even heavier. It will ice up again tonight, making it even more dangerous to try to get around. Please continue to pray for these people.

Cordova is expecting up to a foot of snow mixed with rain today. The airport -- which is 26 miles away, at the end of the Copper River Highway -- has been closed and unreachable for some time. The Ferry is still running, however, but both Valdez and Whittier (where it docks) are both cut off as well. Thompson Pass out of Valdez had been closed for some time due to weather, and not only the Seward Highway, which links Whittier with Anchorage but the tunnel that leads out of Whittier have been blocked by avalanches. But Alaskans continue to help Alaskans, as we always have and always will. If you want to help, the American Red Cross is there, helping on the front lines, as always. They can always use donations. And you can pray. Thanks.

This is more than the normal blizzard, which we are all used to. Did you see the movie "Perfect Storm"? This would be the Alaskan equivalent.

Damn Global Warming...

Global warming puts more moisture into the atmosphere, which increases snowfall in other parts of the world. It's all interconnected. We live in a closed system.

One of those "green" kool-aid drinkers, huh? Breathing out adds CO2 to the atmosphere. That's a "greenhouse" gas. Are we (people) just an infestation on the beautiful planet earth?

I have to shake my head in wonder every time some loser whines about how Alaska or Hawaii gets more money from the Feds than their state does. Try looking at a map chowderheads. When was the last time a foreign country bombed or invaded your state, the War of 1812?

The Feds don't stand of the street corner handing out money, what those statistics mean is that is how much it spends in those states. Do words like "Pearl Harbor" ring a bell? Alaska and Hawaii are both covered in military bases and surrounded by naval bases. The Pacific Fleet is based out of Pearl Harbor, that's why the Japanese bombed it 60 years ago...remember?

Alaska had the DEW line that was supposed to warn us if Russian missiles started coming over the pole, It's not needed now, but Alaska still has way more military basis in proportion to the size of it's population than any other state. And Alaska was not only bombed but invaded by Japan during WW2. It has major Air Force bases, as does Hawaii, because they are both thousands of miles from the Lower 48, and so constitute the first line of defense against an attack from the west. Look at a map please, and think before you post.

Alaska was also invaded during WWII, in the Aleutian Islands. Recently, some politicians tried to take away the benefits from the men who comprised the Alaska Territorial Guard at that time, fighting for a country they weren't really considered citizens of. Thankfully, their benefits have been restored. We are still a major part of the defense against terrorism, conducting excercised with both Canada and Russia every year as part of a global defense. I suggest the people who whine about it never eat salmon or halibut again. Perhaps that's the only contribution they think we make, so they should easliy be able to do without.

I wanted to put that in but there wasn't room, thanks.

I still regard sending our troops up there in summer uniforms was one of the stupidest things our military has ever done. The brass claimed it was so the Japanese wouldn't guess they were going to Attu and Kiska. Personally, I suspect it was just a major FUBAR and they rationalized it to cover their asses.

Haw bad can you get hurt fulling onto 15 feet of soft snow? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using safety harnesses shovel snow of roofs and I had five winters in Girdwood.

The people in this Alaska town are asking for outside help, I wonder who's help? They can't mean from the big bad federal government can they? Don't they always demand their state rights and so on. I wonder if the citizens are anti-tax as well?
This is why we need a fully funded federal government, for such disasters.

Maybe they wouldn't need to ask for help if the Federal Government didn't tax it all away from them in the first place. We need a much smaller federal government that returns power back to the states.

To bad the National Guard was not used quickly in New Orleans (The 17th largest city under water)...Oh yea those people did not vote for Dubya but for some reason these people did not vote for Pres. Obama but once again common sense prevails with a democrat in charge and help has been sent
