Jon Huntsman New Hampshire Primary Results 2012: Former Utah Gov. Finishes In Third Place

CONCORD, N.H. — Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman vowed Tuesday to press on to South Carolina after finishing third in the New Hampshire primary on which he had staked his candidacy – and despite huge hurdles ahead.

"I say third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentleman! Hello, South Carolina!" Huntsman told supporters at a Manchester restaurant.

Huntsman heads to that state Wednesday facing major challenges in the race for his party's presidential nomination. He is largely unknown there, has little infrastructure, and has just 10 days to establish himself.

But he was upbeat after finishing behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, both of whom sought the 2008 nomination.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I think we're in the hunt," Huntsman said, playing off his campaign's frequent call to "Join the Hunt."

Huntsman, 51, who skipped the Iowa caucuses and pinned his hopes on a strong showing in New Hampshire, entered the race last summer to high expectations, but he struggled from the start to win over conservative Republican voters. He repeatedly told voters that he wouldn't "set his hair on fire" to earn applause or votes and cast himself as the voice of reason in a campaign season he likened to the reality show "Survivor."

Huntsman had started to show signs of gaining ground in the last few days, however, after a strong performance in Sunday's debate and after making an aggressive play for independents, who could vote in either primary Tuesday. He held more than 170 public events in the state, including about 50 in the last two weeks, and said that experience reaffirmed his confidence in the political process.

"We proved the point that this state wants its candidates to earn it the old fashioned way, handshake by handshake, conversation by conversation," he said, joined on stage by his wife, Mary Kaye, his parents, and his three oldest daughters. Mrs. Huntsman and the daughters have been a fixture on the campaign trail, with the daughters earning attention with their "jon2012" Twitter account and online videos.

On Tuesday night, they stood in front of a huge sign featuring Huntsman's new slogan, "Country First," which he started using after Romney criticized him for serving as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China. Huntsman, who also served as ambassador to Singapore under President George H.W. Bush, answered that he put his country first while Romney was "raising money" for Republican candidates, and told supporters that Americans prefer the former, not the latter.

"They're tired of being divided. They want leadership that will stand up and tell us, first and foremost, we need to come together as Americans in order to solve our problems," he said, as the crowd chanted the slogan.

"An Internet video painting Jon Huntsman as a Chairman Mao-style Manchurian Candidate, first believed to have been made by Ron Paul supporters, was actually created by members of the official Jon Huntsman campaign in an effort to smear the Texas congressman."

... The candidate of reason.

Well.. I can still hold out hope for Huntsman. All he needs is for Gingrich, Perry, and Santorum to drop out... soon. If he can out last them, the vote will flood to him and Romney. Paul will be left behind and forced to drop out. By the convention, if Huntsman can get the funding, Huntsman may be within a close enough margin that he can get the super delegates on his side.

Ha! God Bless Barack Obama, President 2009-2017.

third is the new first in the huntsman campaign.

had he at least finished second, things might have gotten a bit more interesting. to have spent all that time in NH and banking your campaign to win the state to fall as bad as he did is horrible.

the man is so unknown, huntsmans daughters probably poll and have more recognition than he does at this moment. hell his wife delivered a better opening introducing him than he delivered his speech. cmon.,.....

I wish Mr. Huntsman the very best luck with his campaign. He would make a much better President than Romney and garner far more support with Independent and undecided voters. I also feel he would have a far better chance of winning against Obama.

My hope is that Obama is listening to every word Huntsman is saying, because he's hitting on key themes, and its resonating. He's the brightest bulb and the most decent man in the bunch.

Faved! I agree, Huntsman is a man of quality. I am feeling that he is working to position himself for 2016, he is young enough, and could spend four years on the chicken and mash potato dinner trail like Reagan did in the 1970's.

So you think it's decent to cowardly allow a rival to take the fall for a video proven to have been put out by your own people?

Oh look, I speak Chinese Mandarin. We need a Chinese speaking president.

Give me a break!

Romney and Huntsman together got well over 50% of the vote. If Paul's vote total was added the three got around 80% of the vote. That means two conservatives with common sense and one with libertarian ideas won in a landslide. The crackpots on the far right lost -- big time. Could it be that Republican voters want common sense conservatives and not radical right wingers?

Huntsman is like the fundamentally good character in the stereotypical bad gang movie: you know that as soon as you start rooting for the kid his gang is going to turn on him and leave him dead in an alley somewhere.

Obama's best hope is that Huntsman doesn't gain traction.

Huntsman's best hope is that Romney takes the nomination this time around and he can come back in 2016 and have a chance at the white house. No one is going to beat Obama in 2012.

He got his moral victory and now he, Gingrich, and pArry should go home.

While I kind of like Huntsman, and was hoping he'd do well, his speech last night was glib and thin. He could have used the national spotlight to show presidential vision, and to look and sound like a leader. His unrealistic, "YEEHAAH, THIRD PLACE ROCKS!" speech didn't win him any new converts, IMO. It was his Howard Dean moment.

I'd really like to be able to get a 'feeling" about what sort of man Huntsman is. What I do pick up is artificiality...every word he says sounds like it was poll tested and researched...nothing sounds like it's coming from his heart. He reminds me of Clinton, especially Hillary is this regard. Are these guys so jaded and cynical that they think they have to pretend about everything??. His attack on Romney about the "firing" statement sounds particularily phony. His wife and daughters..are they real???They all look like highly paid models who hold their noses around us common folk who are less than perfect...all this may be unfair to the man but since he hides his true self...who really knows???

Get tired of these made-for prime time candidates with their carefully cultivated images and well groomed, well kept women. Scot Whats-his-name from Mass is cut from similar, slightly less sophisticated, cloth.
