At the age of 18 most of us were planning to leave home for the first time while popstar Justin Bieber, who is two months shy of the benchmark birthday, has sold out concerts worldwide, worked with some of the music industry's hottest artists and already survived his first sex scandal.

His teenage years have been filled with experiences that very few can call their own, but despite working in a grown up world, Bieber tells V magazine, he's in no rush to say goodbye to his childhood.

"People need to know I'm not a kids anymore, but at the end of the day, I'm not completely grown-up," he admits. "I'm still learning, I'm going to grow up how I grow up. I'm not going to try to conform to what people want me to be or go out there and start partying, have people see me with alcohol."

Maintaining the respect of both his young fans and their parents is the goal and Bieber has a role model he wants to fashion his career after.

"I want to be able to do what Michael [Jackson] did -- he always sang clean lyrics -- an it was always that little kids loved Michael and grandparents loved Michael," he explained. "I don't want to start singing about things like sex, drugs and swearing. I'm into love, and maybe I'll get more into make love when I'm older. But I want to be someone who is respected by everybody."

Bieber is startlingly aware of his age and his position in the music industry, explaining he doesn't want people to think of him as a teen sensation -- rather he wants to transition and "become the greatest." But how does a singer who appeals primarily to teenage and little girls plan to sustain his appeal and reach a wider audience?

Bieber believes it's all about making good music. "People hate me before they even listen to my music ... They just hate me because they hate the idea of me," he tells V. "I'm young, I'm handsome -- I don't mean to sound conceited -- but they think that I just got here because [of that], because I'm good-looking and girls like me."

Yes, the girls like him. They go crazy for him. Their love compels them to threaten his 19-year-old girlfriend, Selena Gomez. It's their fandom to an extent that boxes Bieber into the teenybopper status and makes it much harder to gain a male audience.

"I'm not worried about the guy fans because they're going to come," he boasts. "If they listen to the music and they like it, it doesn't matter if they go and act like they don't like me. They're going to go home and listen to it."

Michael Jackson's lyrics and incessant crotch grabbing performances were not exactly so squeaky clean, nor was his very public personal life of gratuitous opulence that led to financial woes, inappropriate and exploitative behavior with children (both his own and others'), and shameless drug abuse that killed him while he was still young. Michael Jackson was not so universally beloved as Bieber seems to think, and MJ is certainly not such a great role model to embrace if Beiber's goal is to keep it clean and be loved by everyone.

From your post it’s obvious you're stuck in a tabloid time zone pal. Read and do the research on him you'll see you're wrong. You know nothing about Michael Jackson & shouldn't publicly run at the mouth as if you do.What song, what lyrics are you talking about? His crotch grabbing is a form of expression, a style of dance, he does it when the music moves him. You make it sound dirty and it's not. Many dancers picked up on it and do it today. The crap you're saying about the children esp. HIS CHILDREN?? You’re way off base with your slanderous remarks. Check the FBI reports, & court documents, One of the Most Shameful Episodes In Journalistic History - here on the HuffPost, Aphrodite Jones has a book called Conspiracy - Was Michael Jackson framed - excellent article - he was scammed by two money hungry extortionists. The Chandlers and The Arvizos, they're guilty. He was acquitted on the second charge and the first charge was out of his hands, it was his insurance company that paid the Chandlers! He didn't kill himself, Dr. Murray was negligent and sentenced for his death. YES he was extremely loved by millions on worldwide level, and still is. He’s highly respected and honored by Presidents, Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses. He's in the Guinness World Record for the most money donated to charity. YES he's a very good role model and I'm glad that Justin knows who Michael was, what he

You're entitled to your opinion. You don't have to love KING Of Pop. Fact is, Michael Jackson encompasses every definition there is of an Icon. Recognizable, by a mere silhouette. Bieber can only dream of attaining such height. Fan base mostly tweens, while KOP crossed every sex, race, and music barrier. Michael Jackson was an innovator. An originator, who is revered deeply. Bieber simply is not. Loved, but not on such as grand a scale as Michael Jackson. Michael has been decorated by Authentic US Presidents. Honored by Congress too. Congressional archives.... new height Thriller has achieved, since death. Bieber's thinking therefore, "politically correct", in comparison to your own.

I'm not a Justin Bieber fan, but I have to respect what Bieber is saying in this interview. And Just saying 1. hater A person that simply cannot be happy for another person's success. So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person. 2. for those ignorant fools that sit there and say, quote "Can you really take this kid seriously? The Bieb talks about sex and drugs like he's already lived 40 years. That's the problem with kids that age, they believe their own ego that they have wisdom and experience when indeed they haven't lived it and have to become an adult." Age have's nothing to do with wisdom and experience I know a lot of young adults/young teens that are mature and wise because of the experience they live through. I also know a lot of adults that claim to be an adult but are very immature, and ignorant. So Bieber keep following your dreams and do what makes you happy.

I wouldn't describe him as "handsome". "Pretty" is probably more accurate.

You sound conceited because you are.
10:10 AM on 01/11/2012
He sounds more mature in this magazine interview than any of you idiots hating on him on here, thats for sure! And the reason you guys are hating, because you realize that its true!! He is not conceited, he just knows the reason guys hate him is because girls go crazy because they think hes the hottest thing right now! Im not saying i agree, but it bugs you so called guys, that girls find this girly looking guy more cute than any of you! He even said, he wants it to be about his music, not the way he looks!! But for some of these teeny bopper kids, thats all they see,, Its sad, but these days it seems to be about how a person looks, not about their talent! its like that with woman celebrities too!
02:42 PM on 01/11/2012
Just because we don't particularly care for him doesn't mean that we're idiots...
And your words indicate that you've spent quality time with him, which I doubt you have, but then again I don't know you, therefore I'm not judging you. -_-

good point!

You are so blessed with talent. Thank you for sharing your beautiful songs, and all the charitable work that you do. Try to keep things in focus. It's not easy in your industry, or even in this world sometimes - Keep God first, stay true to yourself, and close to your family.

If I was into "bubble gum pop", I'd like him.
I'm a rock lady all the way, but he seems like a sweet, decent guy, and he can sing, and his lady is beautiful and seems the same.
06:45 PM on 01/10/2012
It's hard to believe people are seriously taking what he said the wrong way. If you know how to read, you'll understand that he wants to follow in his musical footsteps, "singing clean lyrics." As I said before, I'm not a Bieber fan, but nothing irks me more than something taken out of context.

i agree

Everyone needs to stop bashing the kid. He is very talented- has anyone actually listened to him sing? He also plays drums and can dance really well. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders, when most teens his age (Miley anyone?) are out partying and getting drunk or high. He even donated $15k to the food bank that he and his mom used to go to before he became famous. If you are not a fan, you are not a fan. But he seems like a good kid, so quit hating.

Yeah, not into his genre, but he's good at what he does.
08:47 AM on 01/11/2012
You don't want people hating on Bieber, yet you turn around and "hate" on Miley. What's up with that?? People bash him because he comes off likeable only to screaming 11 year old girls. People aren't interested in what he has to say other than the 11 year old I already mentioned. I am surprised his infalted ego head can stay a float on his boney shouders.
08:07 PM on 01/11/2012
wasn't hating on miley, just stating the fact that she has been in the news a lot concerning underage drinking and drugs...
11:52 PM on 01/13/2012
WRONG and WRONG again. I care very much! I'm part of a Michael Jackson group, a LARGE Michael Jackson group and we range from age 20 to 60 - some of us may not like JB's "style" of music but we support him 100%... and yes, it's because he said "I want to be able to do what Michael [Jackson] did -- he always sang clean lyrics -- an it was always that little kids loved Michael and grandparents loved Michael" Both JB and MJ come from a God loving home and gave credit where credit was due, to the one above.
04:47 PM on 01/10/2012
Take a real good look at him. He'll be a kid til he's 40. I saw a picture of him in a bathing suit and the poor kid looks anorexic. Hell, my average built 10 year old grandson is "ripped" compared to this kid.
03:06 PM on 01/10/2012
This wannabe doesn't have one microcosm of one percent of the talent Michael Jackson had! How DARE he compare his lame dance stumbles and squeaky vocals to MJ! I hate this kid with a passion more and more everyday. Sure Michael did stunts to tease the media and get attention, but he could back it up with his exuberant talent. Bieber, he's trying to mirror Michael in every way, hoping the magic will rub off on him. NOT! Sorry Bieber, The King of Autotune can never replace The King of Pop.
11:59 PM on 01/13/2012
Oh My! It appears we have a different out look on Justin. First of all - I totally agree with talent level, that's a given. Second of all I don't think Justin is trying to be better or equal to Michael Jackson I think Justin just loves the man and his talent so much he wants to honor Michael and imitate him the best he can. Justin knows he can't "mirror" Michael, like you said, The King of Pop can't be replaced. Stop hating ok, L.O.V.E more. I'm not saying go out and buy all his CD's - heck, even I don't own any. Just try to be happy that someone admires Michael that much to strive to more like him.
01:32 PM on 01/14/2012
Never Say Never. Strive Bieber may, yet will NEVER be like Michael Joseph Jackson. Not even remotely close. Simply never.
03:16 AM on 01/21/2012
I understand where you may think Bieber is just an innocent kid idolizing his hero, but I see it differently. Usher said in an interview last year... "Bieber is smart and is learning what it takes to survive in the business". So of course he is going to say nice things about Michael in hopes of connecting to MJ's enormous fanbase. That is obvious to me. I know Bieber isn't the first person to use Michael, and he won't be the last. Remember from 2003 thru 2005, very few of MJ's so-called friends and celebrity admirers came out publicly to support him during his molestation ordeal. After he died, those hypocrites oozed out of the woodwork to praise him---although us fans stood by him throughout. And yes Bieber does see himself as being equal to MJ. He has compared himself to Michael. Access Hollywood once asked him who he would like to do a duet with if he could. He said his choice would be Beyonce'. He compared it to Michael Jackson and Diana Ross' duet together. Well, he's no MJ and Beyonce' is no Diana Ross. They aren't in the same category, vocally or talent wise. So how can he make THAT comparison? Someone needs to tell the Emperor he has no clothes, because they've got the boy believing his own PR hype.
01:33 PM on 01/14/2012
AMEN.
02:44 PM on 01/10/2012
He is a boy for little girls, his music is bubblegum teeniepop.Don't compare with Michael Jackson. In 5-10 years he is fly away.
01:31 PM on 01/10/2012
Justin is a girl, he just doesn't know it yet... Soon the "Change" will be announced, we're all just waiting young Jessica, I MEAN! Justin...
