ROME, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Organised crime has tightened its grip on the Italian economy during the economic crisis, making the Mafia the country's biggest "bank" and squeezing the life out of thousands of small firms, according to a report on Tuesday.

Extortionate lending by criminal groups had become a "national emergency", said the report by anti-crime group SOS Impresa.

Organised crime now generated annual turnover of about 140 billion euros ($178.89 billion) and profits of more than 100 billion euros, it added.

"With 65 billion euros in liquidity, the Mafia is Italy's number one bank," said a statement from the group, which was set up in Palermo a decade ago to oppose extortion rackets against small business.

Organised crime groups like the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, the Naples Camorra or the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta have long had a stranglehold on the Italian economy, generating profits equivalent to about 7 percent of national output.

Extortionate lending had become an increasingly sophisticated and lucrative source of income, alongside drug trafficking, arms smuggling, prostitution, gambling and racketeering, the report said.

"The classic neighbourhood or street loan shark is on the way out, giving way to organised loan-sharking that is well connected with professional circles and operates with the connivance of high-level professionals," the report said.

It estimated about 200,000 businesses were tied to extortionate lenders and tens of thousands of jobs had been lost as a result.

EXTORTION WITH A CLEAN FACE

Old style gangsters handing out cash in bars and pool halls had been replaced by apparently respectable bankers, lawyers or notaries, the report said.

"This is extortion with a clean face," it added. "Through their professions, they know the mechanisms of the legal credit market and they often know the financial position of their victims perfectly."

Small businesses, who have struggled to get hold of credit during the economic slowdown, may have been increasingly tempted to turn to the mafia, said the report.

Typical victims of extortionate lending were middle-aged shopkeepers and small businessmen who would struggle to find a new job and who were ready to try anything to avoid bankruptcy, it added.

"They are usually people in traditional retail sectors like food, greengrocers, clothes or shoe shops, florists or furniture shops. These are the categories which, more than any other, are paying the price of the (economic) crisis," it said.

According to a separate report this week from small business association CNA, 56 percent of companies had seen banks tighten their lending requirements in the past three months.

Dr Corrado Passera - Intesa San Paolo BANK
I kindly invite you to explain publicly why in 2004 you have hidden to the Judiciary District of Ragusa managed by commissioner Doctor Agostino Fera the bank account 10/645629 owned by Mrs Campo Innocenza Maria and why you have never answered to the exposals of denunciation dated 30th December 2009 and instead you have let us wait so many years without answering and let Mrs Innocenza Maria die in the pain that someone has when deprived of all her money

The Italian or Sicilian Mob is often the lender of last resort for small businesses. While there is certainly violence and abuse, there is also the reality that these guys want to keep doing business. Often times, their terms are not much worse than one gets on a Citibank or Chase credit card. And at least the Wise Guys have a code of honor. This is more than I can say for bankers. And at least their honest about being criminals. Bankers put on a face as pillars of the community while they rob the community blind. I'll take the Mob, thank you.

There is very little qualitative difference between organized crime and multinational financial corporations. In fact, organized crime is usually less greedy (the house odds in Las Vegas casinos became much worse against the bettor when multinational corporations took over from organized crime).

F&F, I was thinking the same thing and saw your post. If I can add , regulations have been such a joke in the U.S. that the mafia seems above board in comparison.

Our regulatory bodies are colluding with the new American mafia, the banking industry, to hide, deceive and transfer the wealth of our middle class.

Please stop insulting the mob. They have a strong code of honor. This is much more than can be said for bankers. And the mob is not above the law. Bankers and corporations now are completely above the law and can do whatever they wish.

The difference between the Mafia and the Banks, is that the Mafia actually takes a risk. Bank home loans are backed up by insurance policies, so when the owner skips on the mortgage, the bank collects the insurance. And when the insurance company starts failing, the taxpayers bail it out (see AIG).

Realistically, they don't do that anymore. As a psychotherapist a few years ago, I treated a couple of mob guys. They don't want to call attention to themselves. They pressure people in other ways, but the days of violence with the ITALIAN (or Sicilian) mob are pretty well over. Now, if you look at the Russian mob, the Mexican mob, the Columbian mob or the Triads, you have tons of senseless violence. But the Italian/Sicilian mob has some pretty strong boundaries.

Italy would be a nice colony but they haven't been good at running their own affairs since the days of the Roman Republic.

...bad at running an Empire. I'm not a Ron Paul supporter but if we can't do it right I think we should re-examine what is best for our future.

Have you ever been to Italy. You would be blown away how clean and self sufficient they are . Way ahead of most of the world. Only the US styled banking system says they are broke, Reality is they have been self sufficient for thousands of years.

You cited examples that tell us that they have good local governments. Nationally they have been a joke for centuries. Even during the height of the Renaissance they had no central government. Unfortunately, the US style banking system is in charge so that caveat does not apply.

There high period ended two thousand years ago which makes them about five hundred years less pitiful than Greece.

If the Mafia banks are so successful, maybe we should try putting criminals in charge of OUR financial system?

Oh... Ummm... Wait. I just thought of... Ummm... I'll be right back.

The Vatican Bank is one of the largest and most successful money laundering operations in the world. When John Paul I tried to end this practice, he wound up dead (supposedly of "natural causes") within a month, and the cause of his death hushed up. The Vatican is a snake pit of corruption and criminal behavior. Pedophilia is simply the tip of the iceberg in the Roman Catholic Church.

I don't understand what the hubbub is about, one organization applies an unreasonable interest rate to the original loan, calls your home harasses and threatens you and your loved ones if payment of the loan is delinquent, and corrupts all of the regulators tasked with governing the seedy industry itself, and the other one is the mafia. The only real difference between the two is that if you don't pay back the mafia they'll break part of your anatomy in the streets; if you don't pay back the bank they'll break you on a mental level in court.

The Mafia rarely uses physical violence anymore for loans in default. Their ways are actually a bit more gentle than banks, and they'll work with you more if you are having trouble paying. Give me a Maria lender over Chase any day. I trust the honesty of the Wise Guy more.

But now the guy's gotta come up with Paulie's money every week, no matter what. Business bad? F#ck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? F#ck you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning, huh? F#ck you, pay me."

But it is. B of A, Chase, Citibank, don't help you collect your past due accounts. Pauli does. The banks don't do ANYTHING to assist you....the Mafia will send in people to help you out with your problems, make sure your deliveries are on time and collect from deadbeats. Sounds like the Mob is much more helpful to ME.

Hate to break it to you, but the interest rates you pay on the street either here or in Italy or anywhere to organized crime is lower than what Chase Bank charges and Chase is legal.
