Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran President, Tours Latin America, Defends Nuclear Program

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Latin America

FILADELFO ALEMAN   01/10/12 02:27 PM ET  AP

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Daniel Ortega his "brother president" and Nicaragua a kindred revolutionary nation as he arrived Tuesday for the inauguration of the Central America leader's new term.

Traveling to Managua after defending his country's nuclear program during a stop in Venezuela, Ahmadinejad drew parallels between the people of Iran and Nicaragua, saying they are "on the road to fight for the establishment of security and justice."

On Monday, Ahmadinejad joined his ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in accusing the U.S. and its allies of using a dispute over Iran's enrichment of uranium to unjustly threaten the country.

Both leaders dismissed U.S. concerns about Iran's intentions in the Middle East and its growing diplomatic ties with Chavez and his allies in Latin America.

"They accuse us of being warmongers," Chavez said. "They're the threat."

The Iranian leader also plans to visit Cuba and Ecuador on a trip to promote relationships with some of his close friends in Washington's neighborhood shortly after the U.S. imposed tougher sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Washington and other governments believe Iran is using the nuclear program to develop atomic weapons. Chavez and his allies back Iran in arguing the program is purely for peaceful purposes.

Chavez on Monday accused the U.S. and its European allies of demonizing Iran and using false claims about the nuclear issue "like they used the excuse of weapons of mass destruction to do what they did in Iraq."

Ahmadinejad dismissed the accusations about Iran's nuclear program in general terms.

"They say we're making (a) bomb," the Iranian leader said through an interpreter. "Fortunately, the majority of Latin American countries are alert. Everyone knows that those words ... are a joke. It's something to laugh at."

"It's clear they're afraid of our development," Ahmadinejad said.

They joked that their relationship shouldn't cause any concern. Ahmadinejad said if they were together building anything like a bomb, "the fuel of that bomb is love." Chavez played on the same theme, saying Iran has been helping manufacture an "atomic bicycle" at a plant in the country.

The Venezuelan leader said Iran has helped his country build 14,000 homes as well as factories that produce food, tractors and vehicles. Government officials signed two agreements promoting industrial cooperation and worker training.

Chavez said both Venezuela and Iran are peaceful countries that weather a battery of suspicion and accusations by critics.

"When we devils get together ... it's like they go crazy," Chavez said.

Laughing, Chavez said Ahmadinejad is traveling through "the axis of evil of Latin America."

Iran finds itself under increasing pressure in the standoff over its nuclear program, and in response to the latest U.S. sanctions has threatened to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, an important transit route for oil tanker shipments.

The U.N. nuclear agency on Monday confirmed that Iran has begun enriching uranium at an underground bunker to a level that can be upgraded more quickly for use in a nuclear weapon than the nation's main enriched stockpile. That development has increased fears among U.S. and European officials about Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Last year, the U.S. imposed sanctions on state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA for delivering at least two cargoes of oil products to Iran.

Venezuelan Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez told reporters on Monday the government had not made any oil-related agreements with Iran.

Asked about the sanctions against Iran and its threats to block the Strait of Hormuz, Ramirez said OPEC, to which both countries belong, could not get involved in the issue.

"Any action that Iran takes in defense of its sovereignty is a matter of Iran," Ramirez said.

Adding to the U.S.-Iran tensions, Iranian state radio reported Monday that a court in Iran convicted dual U.S.-Iranian citizen Amir Mirzaei Hekmati of working for the CIA and sentenced the former Marine to death. Neither Chavez nor Ahmadinejad referred to the case.

Wow... Such Iran loving? I am not in the "let's bomb 'em club", but seriously... he is near as cuddly and trustworthy as Hitler.

Chavez is doing himself no favors by aligning with this terrorist supporter... but then again, Chavez is his own worse enemy.

Honestly, although it is difficult to be sure, he seems a lot more trustworthy than Hitler and even than many Western leaders.

The record of duplicity/treachery of Western leaders is amazing.

Why is he more trustworthy, because he sends proxies to do his work instead of doing it himself?

Western leaders were not part of the comment. If someone is a great ball player, do I need to include the names of all great ballplayers?

This is not meant to be racist. White men has made all of the decision in this country. Some are saying be responsible for your own healthcare and retirement. But they pass laws which put ones retirement fund in jeopordy. The Banking Dergulation Bill is the reason property value is in the tank.

Through the mid 70's there was blantant racial descrimination on all fronts. Oppressed so many generations where in my family those born in the 50's,60's, their children are the 1st generation not to really encounter blantant racism and discrimination. . While White people have been able to pass wealth and knowledge to their decendants, for black people this is the 1st or 2nd generation to go to college and obtain the knowledge that Whites withheld from Blacks. When Black people fought against racism they were called communist, said they were a threat to America's national security because they wanted equal rights.

Iran and Venezuela oil is state owned, so now their labeled terrorist because they won't jump when the West says how high. The Latin, African and Arab countries what there own currency, but the West will never let that happen because they want to keep poor countries poor and maintain their dominance and be the bully of the world. Most problems were created by the West. White men still have this arrogant colonialist mentality. It's old and everyone is tired of it. It will not last in the 21st century.

Poor thing... I guess you will be packing your bags and moving to these wonderful... uncorrupt countries that will treat you so much better than the treatment you have gotten here...

By by... fare well... have fun living in your little fantasy..

Your theory is a blatant crutch regurgitated to black society to incite more crack smoking and prostitution...

Go get an edjimication and start living the life that is offered here in America or get your bags packed and move to where you think you will have it better....

Hard work gets the job done. Your brand of racism is the same flavor that has been sold to the down trodden for years. Dump your fixations and make a new reality, one that serves your success and enrichment… Get out of the hole.

Crazy talk is cheap....

TRUTH HURTS !

Notice that the AP buried any reporting about Chavez's role in freeing the US 'hikers'?
12:55 PM on 01/10/2012
Rather than get too excited switch to another news source...or better yet learn a foreign language to expand your horizons. Chavez's role was no secret, not the least because the Venezuelan media kept reporting how great his humanitarianism was.

Chavez's role was not told to USA media consumers because corporate media are in the business of demonizing him. If you want to see much about Venezuela's heating oil assistance program to low income USA citizens, you had better watch the RT channel.

BTW, I speak Spanish, having lived in Spain. I have traveled extensively in South America and Central America with backpack and thumb.

There go those dastardly Iranians, acting uncivilised again. When they're not supporting evil left wing democratically elected regimes by training construction workers (the civilised behavior is to support good right wing dictatorships by training torturers) they're attacking Iraq with electricity supplies (civilised folks know the proper thing to use is missiles), and setting up feeding stations in Somalia (everyone knows that mobile killing stations, AKA drones, are what people living through a famine need). Maybe someday, when they free themselves from self-rule (with American help, they have a good track record when it comes to freeing Iran and other countries of that particular addiction) Iran will progress to the point where they act in a civilised manner.

Who was it that sang "Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran" to a laughing audience ?? Oh yes, US Senator John Mc Cain !

It was a Joke......".a missile under a grassy knoll in front of Milflores"

Everyone in Latin America is wise to the USA's game......the old Monroe "Big Stick" Doctrine. The USA is miffed at the unanimous vote for the formation of CELAC. A unanimous vote for economic, social, and political unity between the 33 nations that represent Latin America and the Caribbean. It takes the air out of US dominated OAS.

Birds of a feather flock together. Both have gutted their countries in their quest for regional and global influence. Neither are trusted beyond the confines of their own inner circles. And both will gladly create geopolitical havoc if it means their stars get to shine just a bit brighter. We should never forget this.

"Both have gutted their countries "
How so? Last time I looked, Venezuela had eradicated illiteracy, and Iran had a greater percentage of women science graduate students than the USA.
12:32 PM on 01/10/2012
Have you been to Venezuela? Cause what I'm seeing there is quite a bit different from what you're evidently seeing. Likewise the comment on Iran. The percent of women science graduates may, in fact, be higher. But what are these women allowed to do with that knowledge, assuming they decide to stay in Iran?

"Both have gutted their countries in their quest for regional and global influence."

Name a country which is wiggling hard to come out of an economic recession and involved itself in two wars for global dominance.

aside from listening to Iran's Big mouthed saber rattling, (which is getting old ) once again George W. Bush's screw ups rise to bite us once again - giving Iran fuel to say "they want to accuse us of making weapons, Just like the fictional WMD's in Iraq.that Man (Bush) caused more damage to this country than can be assessed.

Isn't strange that both these countries have leaders that don't like the west but they have a lot of oil. If they didn't have oil the US wouldn't care what they do. Like any other empire all we care about are the resources of these countries not the people.
12:15 PM on 01/10/2012
The US is still Venezuela's biggest trading partner. This may be a final farewell, as Chavez doesn't have much time left.

Yes, all that sweet, sweet oil the U.S. got from Serbia. The leftwing seems to pride itself in being more internationally aware and cultured, but have really nothing going for them but worn-out slogans and a bizarre attraction to demagogues and tyrants.

Endless propaganda launched by the US and NATO that have nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in abundance and have a record of using them.

Followed by attacks and finally war against nations that have oil that have no comparable capability or, in the case of Iran, a record of violence, but are called threats by the real war mongers.

It's amazing what propaganda and pride can do to make people into monsters.
