Mitt Romney Remains Unruffled By Rivals' Not-So-Devastating Attacks

First Posted: 01/10/12 10:38 AM ET Updated: 01/10/12 12:56 PM ET

From the very first time Mitt Romney deigned to appear onstage alongside his competitors for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, it was hyped as a moment where Mitt would come under sustained attack.

Days before he alit behind the debate lectern, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty rolled out the first potent criticism of Romney's record, tying his CommonWealth Care plan in Massachusetts with President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act under the blanket term "Obamneycare." On the Sunday morning chat shows, Pawlenty seemed awfully proud of the appellation. But when he was asked to make the same criticism to Romney's face a day later, Pawlenty inexplicably chickened out. That basically put him on a glide path right out of the race.

Of course, Pawlenty would then become a Romney endorser and surrogate. But even in that role, TPaw was given to lamenting the fact that he got out of the race early. It's easy to see why -- in the days that followed, every single one of Romney's contenders got a turn to be the Next Best Thing in the "Not Romney" category. But another reason why is that his fellow contenders honestly didn't do a better job of taking on the frontrunner than TPaw did. As Jonathan Chait quipped, "Perhaps Romney has a force field that turns to mush the brain of anybody who threatens him."

That's actually one of the plausible explanations for why the coming attraction of the 2012ers ganging up on Mitt Romney never seems to actually come. And this weekend, really, was only slightly different. With the next primary in Romney's Granite State stronghold, the need to finally start acknowledging the mile-wide target that Romney has had on his back since June could not be forestalled any longer.

But even with the pressing need to drag Romney down, his rivals' investment in the task seemed tepid at best. Rather than a full-bore attack, the field very timidly criticized Romney for being timid. They very conservatively dressed him down for not being a great conservative. Rather than nail him on innumerable position switches, they chose instead to critique the vagaries of his career as a politician -- whom he ran against and whom he didn't and why and why not -- none of which matters a whit to anyone who's not a career politician!

Jon Huntsman got in one good dig and drew applause (which would have been great had he not poked at Romney for being the candidate of "nice applause lines"), but that's as rough as it got for Mitt. In the end, harsher attacks may not be necessary -- polls indicate that Romney's support has slipped a bit, perhaps because he's just as "meh" to the average voter as he is to the GOP establishment. That said, the word coming out of Iowa was that the candidates would be holding nothing back in their stand against the frontrunner. Honestly though, Scott Pilgrim had it a lot tougher, as you'll see in the latest video mash-up from our own Ben Craw.

Willard the Android has nothing to add to the dialogue so he says nothing. To him the election is much like one of his corporate acquisitions.  Simply turn to one's  hugely rich friends and cash rich corporations and buy the process. To even the most deluded the fact that he is uncomfortable around ordinary Americans and has really never set forth  a plan at these "debates" is evidence enough  Read More...

The real question no one is addressing:

If by chance Romney became president, would the (R) House work hand in glove with Mitt ... ?

it's pretty amazing how superficial and interchangeable these debates are - it seems, they are just there so a candidate can crack, produce a gaffe and make it in the headlines the next day.
If any of these candidates would have a plan how they would make things better then he would kill the others with details.

I think the only republican who could feasibly beat President Obama is Huntsman, but he's never going to get the nomination. Romney doesn't stand a chance. And that's not necessarily because of his own beliefs, but just based on the political climate. His party has done him no favors. I think Huntsman would have a better chance winning over moderates and independents than any of the other candidates.

I'm hoping for a new job writing ad copy for Jon Huntsman going into SC and FL. The premise of the campaign is that there's nowhere for Huntsman to go except after Romney voters.

"Dear Republican South Carolina Voter,

I'm told that 37% of you are considering voting for a Mormon. I'm Jon Huntsman and I'm the better Mormon. So please vote for me."

Shouldn't it read:

"I'm Jon Huntsman and I'm 'more-man' than Mitt. So please vote for me."

Nobody in the GOP really likes Romney. His "friends:" like Pawlenty and Christie would rather he lose big time in November. They are just positioning themselves for 2016 by playing the loyalty card.

In reality, they are crossing their fingers hoping he will do worse than McCain did in 2008, so they can come in riding on a white horse (a white tow truck in Christie's case) to save the party from the prospect of another eight years of a Democratic in the White House.

Jeb has said as much in the last year if anyone bother to listen to him, which they don't. He also said that he doesn't want to deal with the mess his brother left behind till Obama cleans it up for him. There is at least one person in that family with some brains left?

Ron Paul supporters.... I understand you like this mans message but he would be 77 when he took the oath of office. 81 when he is done. Isnt that to old? Lets be serious here. A 80 yr old man should not be in charge of the country.

bigoted articles in HIS newsletter aside i think he is just to old.

A lot of Ron Paul's message is based on oversimplified ideologies. He doesn't look at the big picture at all.

Rest assured, it's NO coincidence we all have 10 toes and 10 fingers, NOR is it a coincidence those claiming to be a member of the Homo_Sapiens species CAN procreate forthe Human Race IS one !.

Yes, some family tree experienced a genetic mutation while other did not, but, does a genetic mutation a new race makes?.

Romney is " Obama-white " er ????...

Haaaa-haaaa-haaaaaa...., the sooner our nation learns we are ALL descendents of some " BLAH" Africans that left the birth-place of man,to roam planet Earth, the sooner we'll be ableto deal with problems confronting our daily lives

To a lot of Republicans, Romney is just "Obama-white", er, lite. With luck, they'll sit it out come November.

be wary, a lot of polls show that it is very close between them. What I mean is, keep fighting the fight and don't get too confident!

The GOP didn't only tear the nation a new A - H_ _ _, but as Obama tried improving matter, they sat on the sidelines building as many road-blocks to twart his efforts at success - and I fault We-The-People for condoning their cowardly acts for, this is NOT and must NEVAH be about Obama.

If you love America and if you care for our people, where is YOUR outrage???.

Ok,so you may dislike Obama and you may have even bought in to McConnell's B$ of making Obama a one term president, but what about the decay of our nation and why must the 30 million un-employed be caught in their political cross-fire?.

I could care less whether Obama is a one term or a 5 term president cuz, the fact he's already served one term has entitled him to a pension - and for life !!!!; whetherin office or out of office, he and his family WILL be taken care of with our tax-dollars, but..., what about the remaining 99%-Ters?, Are we going to be alright ?.

Politicians have made our politics a matter that is geared more towards their jobs security and about themselves. Governments were designed for the common good of the nation, it's people and NOT about them willing to serve the people.

Saw an exhibit about General/President Grant today. He didn't have a presidential pension. Had to depend on a pre-sale of his memoirs to keep Julia from living in a workhouse after his death. True story.

Presidents didn't get pensions until Truman who was about to have his house foreclosed on him by the Big Banks. Ironic, isn't it?

To think ANYONE of these wanna-be presidents, from the GOP , will prove solutions to America's problems is for YOU to be living a life of denial.

Not only are you living in denial, but..., where have you been during the past 11 years ?.

Individually, they make NOT have been at the helm of tearing us all a new A-H_ _ E, but if elected, they will be bringing back a good many of the SAME people that created this mess.

Americans, we had better get our heads screwed on straight or be ready to kiss good-bye our ways of life cuz, and for sure, they will bury the middle-class.

The past 11 years have no relevance or reflect on the entire GOP, Republicans or Conservatives. That is utterly ridiculous.

If you think any Republican will ever vote for Obama, you are in denial. No Republican could possibly cause any more damage that what's been done in these 3 years. In three years the damage you blame Bush for was tripled if not more. We will need 20 years of Republican leadership to put this ship back together.

Also, if you think Republicans of any persuasion believes all the garbage reporting going on is going to have an impact, forget it. It won't. We all know it is junk, twisted, distorted and reported solely to deflect attention away from this destructive administration and pander to weak minded liberals.
05:37 PM on 01/10/2012
by the way be careful calling liberals weak minded. A pew poll showed that the majority of scientists consider themselves liberal and only 6% consider themselves conservative.

When you make your decisions based on facts, you tend to vote liberal.

At Paisley Caves in the Cascade Range of Oregon, archaeologists find a scattering of human coprolites, or fossil feces in 2003.[45] The mitochondrial DNA extracted from coprolites linked the cave dwellers to two genetic groups of early Americans that arose 14,000 to 18,000 years ago.
