DADT Would Return To Oklahoma National Guard Under Mike Reynolds' Proposed Bill

After President Obama repealed the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy in 2010, many Republicans quickly promised to reinstate it if they won the 2012 election. But an Oklahoma state legislator is making an attempt to turn back the clock even further on gay rights in the military.

The Tulsa World reported on Tuesday that state Rep. Mike Reynolds (R) of Oklahoma City introduced a bill to bar gays and lesbians from the Oklahoma National Guard. Reynolds told the World that the bill was created "in response to requests from members of the Oklahoma National Guard" and would reinstate DADT among the state's part-time soldiers.

But according to the Human Rights Campaign and The Equality Network, the proposed bill goes even further. "The bill goes beyond the discrimination contained in the now-repealed DADT statute, and allows government officials to directly question someone about their sexual orientation -- essentially removing the 'don't ask' component contained in DADT," the groups said in a joint statement released Tuesday.

Such a move would effectively reinstate the policies that the military abandoned almost 20 years ago. Gays and lesbians were forbidden from serving in the military until 1993, when President Bill Clinton enacted DADT as compromise between gay rights advocates and military leaders. Before then, potential servicemembers were explicitly asked about their sexual orientation as part of the recruiting process and barred from joining if they said they were gay.

Despite the policy change at the federal level, Reynolds claimed that "the state is allowed to set its own standards for service in the National Guard and is not required to duplicate standards for the rest of the U.S. military." The Oklahoma National Guard declined the World's requests for comment.

Meanwhile, gay rights groups are lining up to oppose Reynolds. The Human Rights Campaign and The Equality Network set up an online petition to protest the bill, and Toby Jenkins, the executive director of Tulsa-based Oklahomans for Equality, said that his group will press Oklahoma legislators to vote no.

Just look the other way, dude, and try not to fantasize so much about gay men kissing. It might help you too, if you stop reading the HuffPost "GayVoices" pages. You are giving youself way too much temptation, mistersister. Whenever you see the headline "gay," just say 'NO!" then go to the gym. You'll be just fine.

Has anyone noticed that the homophobes, bigots, racists and others of that ilk are beginning to coalesce in certain regions?!? Or perhaps they are all of the same political party..

Each State has the right to regulate it's own military groups. The Federal government can't take that power. This is one of the most important state's rights cases today. Go Oklahoma!!!!!!

Actually, you're wrong. If Oklahoma attempts to reinstate any regulations found unconstitutional at the national level, it can be challenged in court.
11:42 AM on 01/13/2012
The constitution also gives states the right to balance the power of the federal government so we don't live in a federally opressive society. I served with gay Marines and as long as we dont get any activist drama queens we should be alright. Keep your private life private and things are good.

More like, go to he**, Oklahoma. Another state legislator determined to use intolerance to drag the state back into the mud. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age there are that many intolerant people in this state. If so, then it seems they'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the current century.

Transexual, Bi, Gay, Lesbian, Straight...Does it really matter?
Regardless of sexual orientation, a soldier is a soldier- someone who is risking their own life and welfare to respond to a call to defend their country. Sexual orientation, in my opinion, shouldn't even figure into the matter.
Every soldier leaves behind those that he or she loves and the safety of their home and they should all be honored for this sacrifice, heterosexual or not. Even the Bible says that "there is no greater love than that of a man willing to lay his life down for a friend". It's ridiculous that the Republicans are wasting so much time and effort into trying to have DADT reinstated. What's the point of taking a stance of such needless and unjustified discrimination?

Can we start charging the state of Oklahoma for the attorney fees associated with keeping their laws constitutional? I'm tired of the feds having to foot this bill.

20 years
By David Barz
Nov. 30, 2011

17, still in high school
Following my past generations
I decide to do, 20 years

With everyone I love
And everyone I knew
I left my home, to do 20 years

Many a times I am far and away
Going into harm’s way
With life on the line, I do 20 years

Defend my country
Defend your freedoms
Defend equality, I do 20 years

37 and retired, I did my time
Good enough to serve
Proud to do my time, I did 20 years

Freedom and equality is what this country stands
For everyone else BUT people like me
With no regrets for the time I served
WHAT DO I GET, for my 20 years?

Oklahoma started as a "Bantu-stan" for Native American, overrun by prairie b.igots and still afraid of being "looked at" in a shower...if these "little men" are so scared of a gay person then maybe they should not be allowed in the National Guard/ Military in the first place since they are liable to faint at the first sign of "trouble"

I think the enemies of America have had it wrong all along: if you want to interrogate and terrify battle-hardened soldiers, just throw them in an interrogation shower with a few gays gazing amorously at them, knocking the soap out of their hand, offering to condition their hair. According to the logic from homophobes, national secrets should come come tumbling out.

It is interesting that Perry and others say they would reinstate DADT instead of just saying they would ban homosexuals from the military.

I wonder why this is?
02:34 PM on 01/11/2012
Maybe because it's unconstitutional to discriminate against a group of people like that? There's that.

And yet you replied. Six days later.

Actually I think it's a very pertinent question. If you are against homosexuals in the military, then why not just ban them? Is it that Perry has seen the polls and realizes that that policy isn't polling well enough? Or is it than banning them is unconstitutional? An answer to my question might give quite a bit of insight into who Perry really is.

OOOOOOOOklahomo!
Where hot air comes flamin' down the plain!
And the 'phobes all meet, with stinky feet,
To create laws that will stop the gaaaays!

OOOOOOOOklahomo!
Every night my little twink and I,
Sit alone and talk, and touch our clocks
In a closet hidden from their eyes!

We know that they don't understand
That the U.S. is still a free land ---
And if we say, "EEEOWWWW!"
When we make love, it's just gaaaay
We're just a'sayin'
We're doin' fine, we're Oklahomos,
We're Oklahomos and we're O-K-L-A-H-O-M-O,
OklaHOOOOOOOOOOmos!

Do you believe that this legislator really received requests for this bill from members of the guard? I don't. Somebody's Grandma probably called to complain and that's all it took for this roach to come out of the woodwork.
