The Summit Closing: San Francisco's Coffee Shop-Turned-Coworking Space To Shutter (PHOTOS)

San Franciscans love their coworking spots.

Not surprisingly, our tech-savvy, startup-chasing city was one of the first to embrace the trend of telecommuting togetherness: shared office spaces used by folks who would otherwise work from home or a cafe. On any given day, local coworking hubs brim with otherwise office-less individuals, perched behind their Macbooks and exchanging ideas over free coffee.

Which is why so many people were saddened to hear the news that the Summit, the Mission's most famous coffee-shop-cum-coworking-hotspot, will shut its doors at the end of the month.

"I can't believe my favorite place to work in San Francisco is closing," Claire Grossheim wrote on Twitter. "Where are people going to be seen working on their startup?" Evan Meagher chimed in.

Part cafe, part art gallery and part coworking spot, the Summit deems itself a "third space." "Society needs a place away from home (First Space) and work (Second Space). Third Spaces are 'Anchors of Community Life and facilitate and foster broader, more creative interaction,'" its website explains.

According to Mission Local, the cherished Third Space can no longer afford to pay its rent (the building is owned by tech incubator IO Ventures).

"After a year and half, THE SUMMIT SF will close it’s operations at 780 Valencia to re-open at a soon to be determined location," its notice reads. "We are proud of our time at 780 Valencia, and excited to take The Summit to the next level: a social enterprise spreading entrepreneurship and innovation around the world."

The Twittersphere is already exploding with speculations as to where the Summit will reopen. In the mean time, transient workers can still set up shop at one of the dozens of coworking spaces around town.
