Beyonce Baby Birth: Officials Investigating Hospital Complaints

Beyonce Baby Birth

CRISTIAN SALAZAR   01/11/12 09:31 PM ET   AP

NEW YORK — State health officials on Wednesday dismissed complaints that patients in a hospital neonatal unit were mistreated while Beyonce was there giving birth to her and Jay-Z's daughter.

They had received two complaints about Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, one made anonymously, the other from someone who had learned about the matter through the media, a health department spokesman said. Officials reviewed the complaints and dismissed them Wednesday night, spokesman Jeffrey Gordon said without elaborating.

The hospital, a popular choice for the rich and famous from late philanthropist Brooke Astor to "30 Rock" star Tina Fey, said it was conducting its own probe.

Beyonce gave birth to the couple's baby, Blue Ivy Carter, at the hospital on Saturday.

Media reports said Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, paid $1 million to take over a floor and their security guard blocked parents from the neonatal unit for hours. The hospital denied the reports, saying the couple paid the standard rate for an executive suite without disclosing what that is.

One new mother, Rozz Nash-Coulon, told The Associated Press that her twins, born Dec. 28, were in the neonatal unit and, starting Friday, intense security measures made it a struggle to see them as guards directed hallway traffic.

"Once they checked in there was high security everywhere," she said Monday. "It looked like the president was on our floor. The hospital's security cameras were taped over. Internal windows from the hallways into the ward were blacked out."

The hospital's executive director was heading up its own inquiry into the complaints, hospital spokeswoman Barbara Osborn said. The hospital was interviewing parents who had children in the newborn wing when Jay-Z and Beyonce were there, she said.

"We have spoken to seven out of the 10," she said. "None have reported being stopped from seeing their babies."

She confirmed that security cameras were briefly taped over when the Carter family was being moved, "but only when a security guard was present" on the fourth floor, where the neonatal unit is located. She declined to say why they were taped over.

She said that other parents at the unit did notice "enhanced security." But she said none felt restricted from accessing the unit or any other at the hospital.

Jay-Z confirmed the birth of the couple's daughter in a song released on his social website Life and Times on Monday.

For real privacy and luxury, even on an ordinary person's budget, give birth at home. Home birth rules.

Yes, that would have been a class act. And a great role model!

IF this indeed is true you really don't believe that the hospital would actually admit to it do y'all?
10:49 PM on 01/13/2012
nope. but it does sound good ,well to them, lol

It's not about some so-called put down about hair and skin color. It is all about the amazing power of God, and believe this, he always has a way to even up the score!! That is why the hospital dismiss the complaint as "invalid". Extra, Extra, read all about it!!!

If there is any truth to these complaints then shame on Jay and Bey and the hospital also. I love
Beyonce and thought that she was an empathic person. Another site gave the name of the complainant along with his "quotes" pertaining to the restrictive security measures that were invasive. To a previous poster: This is not about color , it's about doing the right thing. MANY celebs
forget that lose of privacy comes with the territory and that its the "little folk" who have enabled them
to spend 1.3 million on "bullet proof doors" and whatever other security measures they deem important. It would have been nice to have spent some of that money to fed some destitute people right here in their own city. Better yet, they could have hired NYPD's Tactical Force on overtime for a fraction of the cost. If the complaints are valid ( despite Lenox Hills findings) then Jay and Bey
have some apologizing to do and the complaintants have some lawyers to see.

Beyonce, Jay and lil baby blue are protected by the grace of God, these silly people can do them no harm. All they have is hate and jealousy in their heart, why do you think Beyonce had a great birth and was able to walk out of hospilal with her baby in good health, and those other people are still in hospital with sick babies. It does not pay to be evil. Think about it!!

If you believe this then you will believe that beyonce is a natural blond with Caucasian hair.

I think it's outrageous that these allegations were given even a smidge of credibility. There is no way this type of behavior could happen without the hospital facing litigation up the wazoo! The fact of the matter is, people can't seem to move past the idea that this wealthy Black couple, want privacy, are willing and able to pay for it, and aren't hurting anyone else to get it. What should be a relaxing, exciting, and happy time for them and their families has been marred by these "concerned parents" who wanted to get their names in print. I'm glad that the hospital has the video to prove that none of this is true. Hopefully this will be the last report about it.

It was wrong that mothers who were about to give birth were turned away. Who cares what their race is? What is right is right and what is wrong is wrong. Millions of mothers give birth everyday and hers is simply no more special than any of those cases. It should be relaxing and exciting, so imagine how it felt for those mothers to be turned away as well as being told that they would have to wait to go visit their children in the neonatal unit. They have no right. But in this world money talks. Maybe the hospital has the video, (they did tape up the cameras) and just because it is allowed, doesn't mean it should be done.

Did you read any of the complaints? The hospital didn't turn away expectant mothers. What are you talking about? The hospital just told you that there were no parents turned away from seeing their children. Are you so set on Beyonce being a nasty celebrity that you think she would want to close down the entire NICU? First of all, that isn't even possible. There is no way that a hospital could do that without being sued! And no one is suing. I think you should read the article again, followed by my comment and then yours to see where your vision got a little blurry.

They want privacy. The media tries their best to get their hands on any information possible about celebs to publish it to make money. While some celebs are an open book to the media, Beyonce and Jay-Z are and have always been a private couple. Sounds like they took measures to honor that privacy by making sure no photos or information was available for the media to roll with. During these measures, it may have TEMPORARILY inconvenienced a few of the guests that were in the hospital and that upset them, but surely they could understand why these measures were being taken...if the shoe was on the other foot let's say.

Parents not being able to see their newborns is a temporary inconvenience?

If they want privacy, give birth at home!

I don't give a ch_it who they are!
10:53 AM on 01/13/2012
Yeah, giving birth at home could have been an option and a very good one at that. After all, they surely could afford to have that appropriately set up. I guess since the complaints were dismissed, the guests weren't that seriously inconvenienced to begin with.

Does anyone know why the complaints were dismissed?

Because they didn't want to deal with them? To try to maintain their reputation? As an attempt to mitigate or prevent potential lawsuits? Because they're waiting for Jay & Bey to pay off the wronged parents?

(Just my guesses, but pick one or any combination thereof.)

Has Beyonce or her sidekick made a statement? I would really like to know what she has to say about it. I think he will continue to cover it up. But I would like to think that she would apologize.
10:57 PM on 01/13/2012
I saw an interview with a couple on tv and they said they wanted and apology, and I haven't heard a simple offer of apology having been made.
04:20 PM on 01/12/2012
Because they were invalid.
04:39 PM on 01/12/2012
Are you sure or is the hospital being protected against lawsuits?
02:58 AM on 01/12/2012
The majority of people trying to make a big stink about this is envious, jealous WP. They are just upset because Beyonce was the center of attention. I hope the next time Beyonce gives birth, she shut down all of NYC, lol now that would be real funny!!!! Plus no baby was harmed!!!
09:05 AM on 01/12/2012
Yeah, because if it were me, I would totally give a crap about some celebrity's baby during the birth of my child. The fact is that this sort of event is no less special for a normal person than it is for a celebrity. If they did cause a disruption with something as wonderful to any family as the birth of a child, then they owe those people an apology at least.
11:02 PM on 01/13/2012
and that is exactly the thing a couple who were interviewed, want, a simple apology..
01:25 PM on 01/12/2012
Not that you know of. Additionally, she is not the president. Its like being told that a person can't enter the hospital to give birth because they are black and the whites need their privacy.
