The Artist Hanksy Creates Banksy-like Images of Tom Hanks

Hanksy

First Posted: 01/11/12 02:54 PM ET Updated: 01/11/12 02:58 PM ET

We at HuffPost Arts are fans of street art and Tom Hanks. If you combine both of these, you will get Hanksy, a New York-based graffiti artist who converts walls into hilarious tributes. Fans of Banksy, the British street artist, will get a kick out of the slideshow of appropriated images below, each curiously featuring Tom Hanks' benevolent visage.

As Banksy says on his website, "Stencils are good for two reasons; One -- they're quick; two -- they annoy idiots." So what do you think, readers? Is this a great spoof or what? See more images over at The L Magazine here.

"Hanksy" will run from January 13th - January 31st at Krause Gallery in New York.

This would be rejected by Mad magazine for being to bland. The HP does not get it... empty suits at the feed trough.

I think you're missing the point. By sending up the artist Banksy, who has become part of the mainstream (as evidenced by your collectively dense comments), Hanksy is pointing out that counter-culture eventually becomes mainstream culture. Banksy is now a wealthy contributor to the culture that his works originally opposed.

horrible how this gets coverage and several other events opening on the same with legit street artists/graffiti writers get no coverage.. the words "banksy" and "tom hanks" did all the marketing and deserve all the credit here. let's be honest.

So if your not a fan of artists "who show work that's a spoof or copy" is Marcel Duchamp a fraud? Do you think he was the beginning of this whole "art-as-spoof" phenomenon or are there artists who predate him?

Granted it was not the run-of-the-mill Hanks movie but a good movie none-the-less.

Hanksy firstly isn't an Artist as we know it and understand the word,he 's a copyist NOT an Artist!
Real Art,not some half thought through shite that hanksy does!
Banksy and his aussie mate James DeWeaver, real maverick, his works go for 70grand +,and you've probably never heard of him, pull your head out, these are real Artist, phenom skill, thought,NOT Hanksy, what a clown!

I'm not a fan of "artists" who show work that's a spoof or copy of someone else's work.

As Emerson said, imitation is suicide.
