Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey Turn Homophobic Rant Into '30 Rock' Comedy

Tracy Morgan 30 Rock

First Posted: 01/11/12 12:41 PM ET Updated: 01/11/12 05:41 PM ET

Tracy Morgan was hit with some major backlash after he made derogatory, homophobic statements during a standup routine in Nashville last summer. Later, like most celebrities who speak before thinking, Morgan issued an apology and the controversy blew over. So when exactly does a homophobic rant become funny again? According to Morgan, Tina Fey, and the rest of the "30 Rock gang," it's about time.

"Well, you know how a lot of their episodes mirror their lives ... They've incorporated [Morgan's rant] into the Tracy Jordan storyline," MSNBC's Thomas Roberts, who makes a cameo appearance on the show, said of a forthcoming episode. "Liz Lemon writes Tracy's apology on the show and says he's not a homophobe, he's an idiot. That offends idiots, so while NBC is being picketed by the LBGT community, now it's also being picketed by idiots led by Denise Richards. She's the leader of the idiots."

Roberts, an openly gay anchor himself, said Martin Bashir was originally supposed to be part of the show but dropped out due to an assignment conflict. That's when Roberts stepped in to be part of the episode that addresses an issue so important to him.

"I know for me, when I went through this [coming out] in 2006, I couldn't be happier," Thomas explained. "Now, here it is 5 years later, almost 6 years later. I'm so glad that I did it then. I see emails from kids that say 'Thank you.' I'm a reluctant role model, because I know that I'm going to mess up. Whether it's today or in the future, you know, it happens. I like to be an example of somebody who is out there, who is chasing after their dreams, and can talk about it openly and honestly, and can blend the personal and professional in an open and honest way."

I thought it was funny when he first said it.

Anything on tv that is pro homosexual or even leans that way is turned off right away. Sane Americans cannot allow our children to view such propaganda. God Bless America.

There is NOT a rule that says that every comment about gay people has to be positive...I'm black , intelligent, progressive and of sound morals and i'm not trying to be everybody's friend...as a matter of fact i don't need the entire world's love...everybody's love isn't for you and a lot of so-called love is laced with poison.. gay people need to grow up. Everybody doesn't like or love you. Deal with it.

So you're okay with celebrities saying that if their child dated a black man, that they would kill the child? That's the equivalent of what Morgan said...No one is asking to be liked; we're asking that we not be threatened with death.

In Tina Fey's hands it will be funny. Guaranteed. And respectful and thought-provoking.

So they are comparing gay people who protested his remarks to idiots.

Tina - you should have fired him. I will never watch your show again.

Actually, I'm even more offended than I was.

I never want to see Tina Fey again or Tracy Morgan.

Killing gay kids just isn't funny - ever.

"Denise Richards ... the leader of the idiots."

Poor thing. I hope she can rise above this and doesn't get typecast.

wasn't funny then , isn't funny now, by turning it into a sitcom story line does not defuse the prejudice and poison that the first statement made. Tracy had an off nigt , the night the statements were made . he should have said I'm sorry and pulled away from the press at aht point

IMHO, classless Morgan showed what was in his heart, and no amount of pious posturing afterwards (designed to lessen the effects, after all, on his "career," not to assuage any hurt caused by his comments) changed that.

I change the program each and every time I see this piece of dogshit appear.

I will as long as he disgraces the screen with his existence.

Killing Jews isn't funny either, but Life is Beautiful was still a funny movie. You see, I understand when someone is telling a joke or a silly, fake story and I understand when someone is just being a racist or homophobe. Tracy was funny, and admitting that doesn't mean I endorse killing gay kids. You should learn about nuance.

Mr. Morgan. Have you ever said a homphobic slur? Do you have friends who say homophobia slurs? Have you every been a member of an organization where homophobic slurs were made? Answer the question, Mr. Morgan.

It's about time someone takes the issue of discrimination against LGBTs seriously. Anti-gay bigotry is un-American, as are you.
10:04 PM on 01/11/2012
Why don't you take the "antigay" part out of your handle. It's obvious you HATE all Christianity and all it stands for. You're a hypocrite of the first order.

I'm kind of really pleased that they're adressing it. I'm a huge 30 Rock fan and I was so disappointed that someone on a show that I love had said something so hateful and ignorant. I know at the time Tina Fey and some more of the cast made it clear that they were disappointed in him as well. For me, it's nice to see that it's not just been forgotten, that they know people are still angry about it and are actually going to address it rather than just sweeping it under the rug and hoping people forget about it. I'm sure 30 Rock will handle it well but surely we have to wait to actually see the episode before passing judgement?

There now seems to be an inference that the LGBT community and idiots are equivalent.. Doesn't sound like it's a big step forward to me.
