Beyonce Baby Birth: Hospital Complaints Dismissed

NEW YORK (AP) -- State health officials on Wednesday dismissed complaints that patients in a hospital neonatal unit were mistreated while Beyonce was there giving birth to her and Jay-Z's daughter.

They had received two complaints about Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, one made anonymously, the other from someone who had learned about the matter through the media, a health department spokesman said. Officials reviewed the complaints and dismissed them Wednesday night, spokesman Jeffrey Gordon said without elaborating.

The hospital, a popular choice for the rich and famous from late philanthropist Brooke Astor to "30 Rock" star Tina Fey, said it was conducting its own probe.

Beyonce gave birth to the couple's baby, Blue Ivy Carter, at the hospital on Saturday.

Media reports said Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, paid $1 million to take over a floor and their security guard blocked parents from the neonatal unit for hours. The hospital denied the reports, saying the couple paid the standard rate for an executive suite without disclosing what that is.

One new mother, Rozz Nash-Coulon, told The Associated Press that her twins, born Dec. 28, were in the neonatal unit and, starting Friday, intense security measures made it a struggle to see them as guards directed hallway traffic.

"Once they checked in there was high security everywhere," she said Monday. "It looked like the president was on our floor. The hospital's security cameras were taped over. Internal windows from the hallways into the ward were blacked out."

The hospital's executive director was heading up its own inquiry into the complaints, hospital spokeswoman Barbara Osborn said. The hospital was interviewing parents who had children in the newborn wing when Jay-Z and Beyonce were there, she said.

"We have spoken to seven out of the 10," she said. "None have reported being stopped from seeing their babies."

She confirmed that security cameras were briefly taped over when the Carter family was being moved, "but only when a security guard was present" on the fourth floor, where the neonatal unit is located. She declined to say why they were taped over.

She said that other parents at the unit did notice "enhanced security." But she said none felt restricted from accessing the unit or any other at the hospital.

Jay-Z confirmed the birth of the couple's daughter in a song released on his social website Life and Times on Monday.

This baby Beyonce and Jay Zee had is a fashion accessory. Time will tell, TMZ style, how good a mother Beyonce will be. You remember coverage of Britney and her baby. She did everything we would expect from a trailer park trash mom. Smoking and choosing to catch her drink over supporting her baby. Beyonce seems like she'd hand the kid over to Solange and that would be the most sensible thing to do. Raising the kid with a nanny will get TMZ results with a child who is spoiled and controversial. Beyonce works hard on her image and her fans are soooooo demanding that she might favor making that dollah over the real care a mother would give. Beyonce's mother had a true maternal experience because she was a Beyonce mom. Involved in things akin to ordinary childhood coddlings like T-Ball or tennis or cheer leading or dance class. Those are the truly satisfying moments of parenthood. Watching your child/children succeed in sports and crafts and school. Beyonce as mom would be madness. Security guards, paparatzzi, matching out fits and can she dance and sing??? Maybe she could semi retire and make herself availiable to her child. And how come we haven't seen pictures of this child? Does she look like Jay Zee? (See Whitney Houston and her daughter for that one) Did Beyonce have a surrogate carry her child? Things that make you go, hmmmmm.

I bet they'll think twice about where they'll have the next one. That's for sure!

Oh, yes, raspberry, that statement reminds me of the "good old days," when that sort of thing was said about black Americans who were harassed about eating at "public" restaurants and drinking from "public" water fountains.

Why am I not surprised that there were over 2 thousand comments, more than half of which crucified Beyonce and her husband, posted after the article about the *alleged* inconvenience of a couple of other parents, and only about 60 comments posted after this article about the NY state health officials dismissing 2 complaints and the hospital finding that 7 out of the 10 mothers in the maternity ward stated that they were not inconvenienced? Of course, Huffpost's decision to file the article about the alleged inconvenience in the general "Entertainment" section, and then to file this article in the "Black Voices" section has a lot to do with it, I'm sure.

are u ppl really that niave to not realize that when celebrities the caliber of beyonce and jayz have a baby, that photogs and bloggers and tmz staffers will break down walls, run up steps, fill up elevators, pretend to be doctors, expecting dads, ready to give birth mothers, they will try anything to get the first pictures of the carter baby and sell them for profit.
now me and u are regular nobodies right? if we had a child and complete strangers were breaking thier necks to take a pic of my newborn and sell them to the highest bidder i might go temporarily insane and rightfully so. so imagine what they feel like, this moment needs to be kept private and away from the insanely obsessive fans who will probably pretend to be a window washer on the outside of the hospital just to get a glimpse.
its not jayz and beyonce fault the fans and media go crazy about their lives. dont blame them, if society could just wait until the new parents were ready to show pics then there would never have been an issue

Then they should've had their child at home... For 1.6 million they could've bought a house to have there baby.. They took away others beautiful moments to have their own.. I use to be a HUGE Beyonce fan btw, so I'm not being envious. There's just a line and I feel she crossed it.

Did you even READ the article? The hospital stated that Beyonce and her husband did *not* pay $1.6 M. And, even if they had that would be their business, not mine, not yours or anyone else's.

More sour grapes from someone who is used to being coddled because of money. Get over it!
09:37 PM on 01/12/2012
For all we know, Beyonce and Jay-Z were probably the only ones who paid their bill !
09:28 PM on 01/12/2012
Lets see, when high profile folks enter the hospital, they are not treated like normal patients because .....newsflash..... they are not !
07:55 PM on 01/12/2012
Why do some people always bring color and hatred into an issue? Beyonce is loved by many WP including me but if they really did diss the other parents they need to apologize. Above all the hospital
needs to be held accountable for allowing it.

It's not about some so-called put down about hair and skin color. It is all about the amazing power of God, and believe this, he always has a way to even up the score!! That is why the hospital dismiss the complaint as "invalid". Extra, Extra, read all about it!!!

According to the article, the hospital was able to contact 7 of the 10 other mothers who were in the neonatal unit and all 7 of them stated that they were not inconvenienced during Beyonce's stay. Presumably, the hospital will be able to contact the remaining 3 mothers, and I'd be willing to bet that they will say the same thing. So, just how did Beyonce and her husband ""diss" the other parents?"
IF the other 3 say they were inconvenienced, it is the hospital *not* Beyonce and her husband who need to make amends.
04:50 PM on 01/14/2012
In all fairness this is the HOSPITAL's report. I am not therefore saying it's not true. However, I AM saying it is biased. We do not know how the interview questions were stated. We don't know the exact answers of the patients. What we do know is that the hospital performed their own probe. Do you honestly think the hospital would say we performed our own probe and "10 out of 10 of the mothers were dissatisfied and denied an opportunity to see their children?" An outside investigation should be handled to weed out biased parties and crazies claiming issue who have nothing to do with this at all. Also, it was not just maternity ward patients who came forth to the media with a complaint.

I'm not against the added security. Sure, they needed it. As long as no other patient there was treated badly or had to experience hardship because of "one" patient then that's fine. The birth of a child is important to every mother. Beyonce's is no more important than anyone else's. They do have facilities that cater to celebrities. Maybe, they could have chosen one of those instead of a public hospital. Maybe, even a home birth. Babies used to be born at home all the time. We can't believe everything we read so I don't know what's true regarding this whole situation.

Did you READ the article? It states that Lenox Hill Hospital *is* a hospital known to "cater" to celebrities.

And, why do some posters repeatedly state that Beyonce's child birth is no more important than anyone else's? How is that relevant to anything? She and her husband have not issued any such statement. My daughter-in-law and my son had their baby in a hospital suite (they are not rich or celebrities). They requested a suite and paid more for it. Most hospitals have such suites and if they are available any patient can request one. The cost is not prohibitive and these suites do not inconvenience any other patients.

Yes a whole floor. No, they should not apologize and if Mr. Coulon could afford and thought the whole floor was necessary for the safety and security of his children and wife he would have done the same. People always want to blame the deepest pockets or the biggest name instead of the obvious culprit. Society always needs to find a way to make themselves feel better by bringing the same people we put on a pedestal down to earth. I am neither a Jay Z fan nor a Beyonce fan, but I am a mother and if I were they, I would have cleared the hospital. They paid for and had the consent of the hospital to take over the wing. If the hospital did not take proper care and pay attention to the needs of other patients, then they ALONE are at fault. Why isn’t Mr. Coulon demanding an apology from the hospital? Having had two children of my own, having been in a maternity ward, having had a nephew in NICU I know that you cannot always have access when you want access. He was stopped; for seconds, for minutes, for hours? Indefinitely? We jump to conclusions because we have been waiting to pounce. Jay Z and Beyonce owe NO ONE an apology, but they will. Mr. Coulon, I hope you get the attention you were seeking by pretending to be infuriated and exaggerating the extent of your displeasure.

we all know what the few complaints were about. "How dare those uppity rich Blacks lease an entire wing on the hospital, who do they think they are?" Does that about cover it?

LOL, you got that exactly correct!!!

Glad there is no video of this! We should all be grateful. Did she forget to inform the hospital that she would be using that facility and would need the extra attention? Arent there specific 'Celeb' hospitals in California all the Celebs use for medical stuff?

The location of birth of Beyonce's baby was New York. Are you suggesting that she and her husband should have flown to California when she went into labor?
01:38 PM on 01/12/2012
HIPAA is real folks and so are lawsuits: 1) Someone on the staff may have sold security tapes if they were allowed to roll; that's a lawsuit against the hospital. 2) This comes with celebrities. Perhaps the hospital should review the way it handles security. 3) This might be a lesson that if celebrities come with so much baggage they should try to make other arrangements. A home birth behind gates sounds better. They don't have to worry about the public then.

JayZ and Beyonce have always been so thoughtful in the past. Are they afraid an apology for inconveniences would lead to gold-digger lawsuits? The arrival of a long-awaited baby can make the rest of the world disappear for awhile. :0)

joyz it is not Beyonce and Jay's fault all of that is on the hospital. The hospital's job is to make sure all of their patients needs are met. Everyday celebrities have babies in the hospital, but most hospitals plan for all of their patients. Whoever was in charge of the logistics needs to be FIRED.
04:56 PM on 01/14/2012
Do you want to know why they are not apologizing? Because despite the inaccurate reporting of the media, I'm sure, they did request special treatment and this did inconvenience other patients. No need to deny that. Plus they have a new born. Right now they have to tend to her. They can't be worried about petty trivial complaints which will most likely go no where. Even if they do amount to something the hospital will be at fault for poor practices not Bey and Jay.
