Michelle Obama Twitter Account, @michelleobama, Launches

Michelle Obama has joined the Twittersphere.

The first lady's Twitter feed, @michelleobama, went live on Thursday. It is managed by the president's re-election campaign, with any tweets from the first lady herself to be signed "-mo."

The first two tweets came from the campaign staff, not the first lady, and described the account as "a new way for you to connect with First Lady Michelle Obama and the President's campaign."

Within an hour, the first lady had more than 20,000 followers.

President Barack Obama also has a Twitter account managed by the campaign.

Its first tweet of the day: "It's not every day we get to welcome the First Lady of the United States to Twitter - happy to have you, (at)MichelleObama!"

The latest outrage du jour was Republican Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal forwarding around an e-mail poking fun at First Lady Michelle Obama. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, it said “I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mrs. YoMama a wonderful, long Hawaii Christmas vacation—at our expense, of course. “YoMama?” Neal later apologized for the condescending remark, but the damage of this toxic hateful speech has been done. Could you see former first ladies Jackie Kennedy or Barbara Bush receiving this kind of disrespect without national outrage?

It's amusing to see the racism and envy jump out in posts every time Michele Obama is mentioned. Here we have a poised, gracious First Lady with impeccable family values and the great unwashed of the GOP have a flaming fit every time her name comes up. Personally, I'm grateful for a First Lady who isn't sitting upstairs in the White House with a fist full of Valium in one hand and a tumbler of bourbon in the other.
