Anti-Abortion Group Sends Children With Teddy Bears To Lobby Lawmakers

Teddy Bears

First Posted: 01/12/12 04:07 PM ET Updated: 01/13/12 12:01 PM ET

To win votes for one of the most stringent abortion restrictions in the nation, an Ohio anti-abortion group has employed an unexpected team of lobbyists: children with teddy bears.

Ohio Senate staffer Leo Almeida says he was sitting in his office Tuesday morning when two young girls, who looked about nine or ten years old, walked in holding a teddy bear. One of the girls squeezed the bear, Almeida said, to play the ultrasound recording of a fetal heartbeat. She then recited a pre-written spiel asking state Sen. Capri Cafaro (D) to support the Ohio "heartbeat bill," a controversial anti-abortion bill that would ban abortion after the fetal heartbeat is detectable.

"She seemed really, really nervous," Almeida, an administrative assistant for Cafaro, told HuffPost. "I've had other kids come into the office with adults, but usually the adults introduce them and explain what the group is trying to do. I've never had just a kid come up alone."

The tactic did not go over well with state senators.

"I'm not at all supportive of the bill, and I'm not supportive of them sending kids in my office with a teddy bear that mimics a heartbeat, either," Sen. Shirley Smith (D) told HuffPost. "I thought that was a very cheap exploitation of kids. I would rather them come in my office and ask to sit down and talk about it, rather than send a kid into my office. I didn't like it at all -- in fact, I didn't even want the teddy bear."

"It is an emotional kind of tactic, bringing young children in and having them bring teddy bears. I think that's a little low," Sen. Charleta Tavares (D) said. "I think on this very emotional and highly charged issue, people have already made up their minds."

The same day as the teddy bear deliveries, eight-year-old Christian Harrington delivered a speech about the heartbeat bill at the Ohio Statehouse. The Daily Record reports that he was barely tall enough to see over the podium.

"I'm here to save babies with beating hearts," Harrington told a packed committee hearing room. "And I want to tell the senators to pass the heartbeat bill right now. And when I mean right now, I mean right now."

Faith 2 Action, the anti-abortion group sponsoring the teddy bears, sent children into all 33 Ohio Senate offices on Tuesday morning to lobby for the abortion restriction bill. The fetal heartbeat can be heard as early as six weeks into the pregnancy -- more than three months earlier than the "fetal viability" limit set by the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision.

The group did not respond to calls for comment, nor did any state senator who supports the bill.

"It's not surprising to see they're using such emotionally abusive tactics to distract from the fact that this bill is clearly unconstitutional," said Erin Matson, action vice president for the National Organization for Women.

The bill, which the Ohio House passed in July, is seen as so extreme that it has divided even Ohio's anti-abortion community. If it passes the Senate, a number of reproductive-rights advocacy groups will likely challenge it in court, resulting in a lengthy and expensive legal battle that Ohio would likely lose.

"We certainly don't want the courts to reaffirm Roe with a decision in Ohio," Mike Gonidakis, executive director of Ohio Right to Life, said when the bill was introduced in March.

Now the bill is tied up in the state Senate. It was expected to pass before the end of the year, but Senate President Tom Niehaus (R) delayed a hearing on the bill at the last minute, saying that the 20 or so "eleventh hour" changes to the bill required more time to sort through and consider.

Tavares said pro-abortion rights lawmakers are tired of the high volume of anti-abortion bills coming through the Senate this term, and the means by which activist groups are trying to push them.

"If anything, these tactics have made legislators more firm in their beliefs," she said. "And in some cases, more angry."

The rabid anti-choicers only see the world in black and white. Abortion is ALWAYS wrong, and that's that. The reality is that most things in life are not black and white; there is a lot of gray area. While I don't believe that abortion is something to be celebrated, I also believe that sometimes it is necessary or the best available option for a woman and/or her family. The truth is none of us are capable  Read More...

Most abortions could be avoided by utilizing a little communication, If you ladies would ask each man how he feels about child support, birth control, and abortion prior to the act, and if you men would ask the same question, you could then decide if you wanted to proceed, I know it's a mood killer, But so are dead babies.

The Golden Bough still is great book to see the path of the Religious cults - we have now and have!

The book scandalized the British public upon its first publication, because it included the Christian story of Jesus in its comparative study,

THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS BOOK
by Alan Watts (1915-1973)
For many centuries the Roman Catholic Church was opposed to translating the Holy Scriptures into the "vulgar tongue.” To this day, you can still get rid of a Bible salesman by saying, "But we are Catholics and, of course, don’t read the Bible.” The Catholic hierarchy included subtle theologians and scholars who knew very well that such a difficult and diverse collection of ancient writings, taken as the literal Word of God, would be wildly and dangerously interpreted if put into the hands of ignorant and uneducated peasants. Likewise, when a missionary boasted to George Bernard Shaw of the numerous converts he had made, Shaw asked, " Can these people use rifles?” "Oh, indeed, yes,” said the missionary. "Some of them are very good shots.” Whereupon Shaw scolded him for putting us all in peril in the day when those converts waged holy war against us for not following the Bible in the literal sense they gave to it.

I've never understood the pro-life side. They treat people already on this planet like ****, yet they're hell bent on bringing as many more people into it as possible. Some bundle of cells that has no thoughts or memories or personality, but according to them has been implanted with a soul, not due to any scientific evidence or facts, but because they "just know." And that is important enough for them to kill over.

If abortion troubles them so much, they need to create a world, a society, a system that isn't horribly hostile to parents, moms, single moms trying to raise children. It's incredibly costly and time consuming and there can be a lot of societal shame, people have to put their lives on hold as far as jobs and education in many cases. Yet the same pro lifers that want them to have their babies call any programs that help them "socialism, entitlements, dependencies, big government, extra taxes on us." Well you can't have it both ways pro-lifers.

Make a better world where nobody would ever want to have an abortion. Our world is a money grubbing judgemental society that is hyper competitive and viciously spiteful. We can do better, if we collectively decide to.

This is on a par with the lady that had her son talk to Bachmann about his mom not needing to be fixed. I didn't approve then, don't approve now.

No, this is not on par with that at all. That kid was asking a presidential candidate why she hated and wanted to "cure" his happy lesbian mom, who did not deserve the hate or discrimination and there is nothing to cure. But even a happy kid with good parents couldn't convince her that her anti-gay rhetoric was silly and pointless.

This is a new low with the kids and teddy bears. It won't accomplish anything, and it doesn't address the reasons why women get abortions.

God has told us that he knew us when we were still in the womb.

Parents that kill their unborn children will meet them as full grown adults, on their judgment day and have to explain why they created a life just to kill it before they even had a chance to meet them.

Not believing in God or not believing that a baby in the womb is a human life will not change Gods law..

Actually the bible says God knew us before forming us in the womb which would refer to our immortal soul before we were thought. It has nothing to do with abortion.

God's law was also perfectly fine stoning pregnant women to death for adultery. and making women drink "bitter water" to cause them to miscarry if they were pregnant with another man's child.
07:39 PM on 01/13/2012
Thank you for admitting that I was right in your first sentence, the rest is complete babble.

Job 31-vs15, Did not he that made me in the womb...
Psalms 127-vs 3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the WOMB.

The punishments you list are not from Gods lips but rather a recording of MANS law.
Jesus said let he without sin cast the first stone.

You should really try reading and studying the Bible instead of parroting what some liberal atheist told you it said.

Using Gods law or simply natures law, you can NEVER justify killing an innocent baby.

A woman’s CHOICE ends when she chooses to have unprotected sex, either for self gratification or for financial gain (free dinner and a movie), when she and her mate create a life, it is murder to kill it.

The Bible says thou shalt not ” murder,” we have replaced that word with “kill”.
03:46 PM on 01/14/2012
The Bible is not a book of myth. You are wrong and someday this will be pointed out to you. It is plain that you do not want to change your life to fit Gods word, and you cannot change Gods word to fit your life.

I pray you change your mind before you meet your maker.
Peace.

You cannot use any religious argument to create or destroy any law in a nation that does not have an established religion.

The pro life Republicans make absolutely no sense on this topic. So you are pro life, and pro death penalty, at the same time..... You're for less government, but you want the government to tell you whether you can or can not have a baby..... Its a no brainer that people should make their own decisions. Secondly, how are we still even talking about this subject in 2012. We have far more important things to deal with than abortion and gay marriage.
02:18 PM on 01/13/2012
If you were that unborn baby in the womb, I doubt there would be any subjects more important too deal with today.

Are you really trying to compare the murder of the most innocent to ending the life of a violent rapist, murderer ? REALLY !

The supposed "most innocent" have an incredibly high death rate. 70% of all fertilized eggs will never attach and most pregnancies end in miscarry. If they are supposedly God's best little buddies why doesn't God increase their survivability? Born infants in Somalia have better chances.

Fanned. This is a settled issue and we should NOT be dealing seriously with ancient superstitions in this day and age. To each his own, but I shouldn't need to deal with people who wish to shove religion down my throat and into my life and decisions.

I wonder how many of these parents who forced their children to take these bears into the office of the electreds HAVE EVER ADOPTED A CHILD? I'd bet my last dollar these little tykes were dressed in the best expensive clothes with their hair having been curled and looking like little dolls them selves. Obviously the people who put this stunt together have the huge resources to have these things manufactured and it was not cheap. Perhaps they should support and help the Mom's who have children with special needs and the so-called father has flaked out and does nothing to help HIS child. Those who sit on high thrones and tell others how to live will face their maker someday and they may be surprised at what the maker thinks of them

Just face it the only reason anyone is anti this one is bcause they fear that others will out populated them on planet that already has over 5 billion to many people. I have sdopte twins for kids so I never have reporduced myself and have done nothing to over populate the planet except for being born and I had not say in that. How many of you can say same.

Killing a hepless human life is a horrible thing to do.
Knowing not to get pregnant because you will not be able to raise and care for this child is the most important thought a female should ever have.
The anti people should be sending 40 million of the unwanted unhealthy children to this meeting.

Where does the male come into this scenario? There's usually one around in these situations. I think we should start a new campaign called "Stop Abortion Before It Starts" and it would involve every male who wishes to become sexually active, but doesn't think he should stick around and support his children to be subjected to a reversable vasectomy. What would you think of that idea?

If Hitler and Pol Pot had known about this abortion thing They may have been able to do it legally; In each place about 8 million were killed ( estimate due to source of information) and so far the # of abortions are about 50 Million 1.37 a year since 1973. Interesting when you consider the Population of New York city is 8.1 million, and California just over 37 Million.

But if survival is a right of the fittest, isn't it a tad unfair to Pit a 3 month fetus against a 40 year old doctor, with a scalpel and an incinerator. On the other hand I do see your point, if there is any particular group you would want to exclude from the gene pool, it would have to be the group capable of abortion.

Do these anti-choice people have no shame? Exploiting children in this way is despicable. Teaching them to de-value women is not being a caring parent, and indoctrinating them into the dogma that villifies a woman's constitutional and legal rights is not teaching them much about valuing our constitution. Poor kids. It is my belief that hatred is carefully taught, and love is more spontaneous and kind. The anti-choice, forced birther groups that call themselves pro-life might want to take a look at what they are teaching these kids about life. Seems the kids are learning very young not to value a woman's life because a potential life is more important than hers. Take care little girls!
