Ricky Gervais Slams Arrogant Actors, Millionaire Narcissists

Ricky Gervais

With the world gearing up for Ricky Gervais's next assault on Hollywood, he wants to make one thing clear: he isn't being mean just to be mean.

In a new interview with Esquire ahead of his Sunday turn as Golden Globes host, Gervais says his barbed words toward his fellow celebrities have both populist and religious merits.

"Let's get this in perspective: They're the wealthiest, most privileged people in the world," he says. "Imagine if I had gone out there and said, 'We're all in the same gang. Aren't we brilliant? Us millionaires together.'"

Gervais's closing line during his rip-rollicking performance at least year's Globes saw him "Thank you to God that I'm an atheist." It raised eyebrows to make such a public denunciation of religion, but he says that it wasn't a matter of just declaring his own beliefs (or, non-beliefs). Again, it was a shot at the way he says many narcissistic celebrities act at when in the spotlight.

"It was a swipe at all those people who thank God because they won an award," he says. "How arrogant is that? There's war and famine and God's going, 'Know what Bullock? Write a speech. I'm not going to say anything, Sandra, but write a speech. That's all I'm saying.'"

Still, in the end, Gervais doesn't take the show all that seriously; he's got two television shows on the air in "Life's Too Short" and "An Idiot Abroad 2." Those, he told the New York Times, are his real passion projects.

"I do the Golden Globes like some people play golf on a Saturday," he said. "It's fun, but it can't affect me because come Monday morning, I'll be writing a new stand-up show or I'll be writing a new TV show or I'll be writing a new film. So it's not exactly bravery."

Gervais is more suited for Red Carpet raillery with Joan Rivers than hosting the entire Golden Globe. A constant barrage of caustic insults wrapped in a British accent does not make a good Master of Ceremony nor a comedian.

a person thanks God because something good has happened in his/her life and he thanking hiscreator. not because God rigged the win. If a person asks for help in bad times, is it wrong to thank God when things go well. I thank God for a lot of good in my life and yes none is more important than starving people in Africa. Whether you are religious or not, it's best to respect other people's choices and move on.

Well a lot of people who thank god during their speech don't really appear to be religious during the rest of the year. It's not like their in church every sunday. Unless they're at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Cali.

Do you blame God when something goes wrong? If not, why not? Isn't he just as responsible for the bad things?
03:37 PM on 01/15/2012
Every religious person can shove their beliefs and views of their God in our face, but once a person of non-belief makes a statement or joke showing their views, he/she all of a sudden is the worst person in the world. Count how many times God is mentioned to how many times any other religion or belief is mentioned. As an athiest, hearing about God all the time and having to deal with religious people gets very annoying and I agree with Ricky 100%.

Dont really care much for ricky, dont think he is funny at all

But, as a fellow athiest, he is correct, but should he have said it publicly, probably not, as that makes him no better than jehovah witnesses that bang on your door ranting on about there religious views.Things like that should be kept to yourself, unless in defence or you have been asked publicly

Wow, the fact that these actors are publicly blathering on about the invisible bearded man who lives in the clouds being responsible for their success is EXACTLY what RG is understandably irritated by. Him announcing his atheism at the same award shows was simply a reaction/wind-up to their deluded self-satisfied preaching during acceptance speeches. A point entirely lost on you, atheist or not.
05:34 PM on 01/15/2012
So it's ok for people to publicly thank an invisible god, but NOT to say there is no god? And you're an atheist? Whaaaaaaaa? "Things like that should be kept to yourself" seriously? We need more people like him, unafraid to say he is an atheist and unafraid to say it publicly. Atheism needs more acceptance.

Attacking another doesn't take intellect, it shows a weakness of character.
This industry is filled with self loathing, fear, resentment and anger, and those who've employed Gervais are merely getting off on watching successful insecure, fragile artists being abused.
Ultimately it will end his own career self destructing, as his shtick will grow old before he knows it.

03:33 PM on 01/15/2012
oh the fan police! You said something mobbish that 119 people said, "Hey, I might have said something like that. Let me fan them so they know they are not alone."

If the freerepublic has fans, would you be impressed by the number of fans someone has? The same applies here.

Yeah, that's exactly why Don Rickles was a flash in the pan, and Rodney Dangerfield was a total nobody, and Redd Foxx was never known nationally, and Dennis Leary can't find a job, Chelsea Handler will never have her own show...

Anyhow, Gervais has nothing to worry about. If his acting career stops right now he can fall back on his insanely successful producing career and lament the fact that he only starred in two movies and a handful of sitcoms, won stacks of awards and was directly responsible for several of the most popular sitcoms ever. It'll be a tough break, but I'm sure he'll weather it gracefully.

Gervais has talent but Don Rickles has a whole different vibe. I saw him give a show with many of the Rat Pack in the audience back in the day. He insulted everyone but everyone loved him because the man just exudes love. Many people overuse the word 'awesome' but it actually applies to Rickles. Gervais is a talented comic but Rickles is one of the masters.

If someone asks if you're a God, you, say, YES!
11:04 AM on 01/15/2012
When you look at it objectively, it's a pretty strange thing to do. You win an Award and thank an invisible supernatural being that, you feel somehow after designing and creating an entire universe wants to manipulate things to such a degree to give YOU a little statue for your work in the arts industry.

You believe this invisible all powerful suuuuper being is thinking specifically just about lil ole YOU.

I don't even like calling it god, because it doesn't reflect how silly it is. the invisible, super-being

Bravo!! Ricky Gervais. You tell 'em, pal. Rich pampered celebrities thanking their 'god' for all the money and awards they receive. Pathetic and infantile.
Too bad he didn't mention Mr Plastic Jesus himself, Tim Tebow.
