ROME (AP) — A luxury cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Tuscany, gashing open the hull and forcing some 4,200 people aboard to evacuate aboard lifeboats to a nearby island early Saturday. At least three were dead, the Italian coast guard said.

At least three bodies were recovered from the sea and at least three additional persons were feared dead, and helicopters were working to pluck to safety some 50 people still trapped aboard the badly listing Costa Concordia, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Francesco Paolillo.

Paolillo said it wasn't immediately known if the dead were passengers or crew, nor were the nationalities of the victims immediately known. It wasn't clear how they died. The Italian news agency ANSA reported that some people had jumped overboard in the scramble to evacuate the ship, which had just begun a Mediterranean cruise.

The evacuees were taking refuge in schools, hotels, and a church on the tiny Tuscan island of Giglio, a popular vacation isle about 18 miles (25 kilometers) off Italy's central west coast.

ANSA quoted two Italian journalists who happened to be among the passengers taking the Mediterranean cruise as saying the accident happened during dinner hour.

"We were dining when the lights went out, and suddenly we heard a bang and the dishes fell to the floor," ANSA quoted one of the journalist-passengers, Luciano Castro, as saying.

"It was like a scene from the Titanic," another passenger aboard, journalist Mara Parmegiani, told ANSA.

Paolillo said the exact dynamics of the accident were still unclear, but that the first alarm went off about 10:30 p.m. (2130 GMT), about three hours after the Concordia had begun its voyage from the port of Civitavecchia, enroute to its first port of call, Savona, in northwestern Italy.

The coast guard official, speaking from the port captain's office in the Tuscan port of Livorno, said the vessel "hit an obstacle" -- it wasn't clear if it might have hit a rocky reef in the waters off Giglio -- "ripping a gash 50 meters (165 feet) across" on the left side of the ship, and started taking on water.

The cruise liner's captain, Paolillo said, then tried to steer his ship toward shallow waters, near Giglio's small port, to make evacuation by lifeboat easier.

But after the ship started listing badly onto its right side, lifeboat evacuation was no longer feasible, Paolillo said.

Five helicopters, from the coast guard, navy and air force, were taking turns airlifting survivors still aboard and ferrying them to safety. A Coast guard member was airlifted aboard the vessel to help people get aboard a small basket so they could be hoisted up to the helicopter, said Capt. Cosimo Nicastro, another Coast Guard official.

A statement from Costa Cruises, the company that runs the ship, confirmed that the evacuation of the 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew had begun, "but the position of the ship, which is worsening, is making more difficult the last part of the evacuation."

Costa Cruises' statement did not mention any casualties, and said it had not yet determined the cause of the problem.

Costa Cruises said the Costa Concordia was sailing on a cruise across the Mediterranean Sea, starting from Civitavecchia with scheduled calls to Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Cagliari and Palermo.

It said about 1,000 Italian passengers were onboard, as well as more than 500 Germans, about 160 French and about 1,000 crew members.

For your consideration,

On gCaptain.com there is the commentary from one of the crew involved with getting the passengers into lifeboats. A very different perspective from the news reports. http://gcaptain.com/shame-you-costa-concordias/?37697

There is also a video of a close pass to San Giglio by the Costa Concordia in August 2011.

They look to be about a mile off the island.

My best guess so far is that they deviated from the usual course to make a closer pass to the island and misjudged their turn, hitting the rocks and ripping a huge hole in 2 or 3 compartments, dooming the ship. We still don't know why it capsized to starboard when the known damage was on the port side.

They were very lucky to get 4000+ people off given the length of the damage and the angle of heel.

How romantic.....

Will they be able to patch that big gash in that Ship and somehow re-float it, or will they let it Rust away where it lie's? Righting it back up could be done, but massive winches would have to be used.
Or they could just cut it up and let the Scrap dealers make a fortune off of it.

I am absolutely appauled at some of the insensitive comments. Really people, there are people who are seriously hurt both physically and mentally and many dead...are these comments really necessary? This is quite tragic and perhaps could have been prevented.

Too many people lining up on the one side of the ship for the free dinner buffet.

It will be interesting to hear about the reason for the accident. I hope for a thorough investigation and a trueful declaration. Here in Sweden we had a ship; Estonia, which went under in a storm in the Baltic Sea about 20 years ago and 852 people died. They could not find the exakt reason, but it is beleived, that the front door of the ship was opened up in the storm.

FYI, There is a very thorough video on the Estonia disaster. It, and a disaster in Holland caused a major redesign to the bow doors on ferry boats. No similar disasters to ferry boats that I know of since then. Both accidents took place in very rough cold conditions.

The report said they were three hours into the cruise and passengers had not had a safety drill. I've been on five cruises all starting in Florida ports. There is a MANDATORY Safery Drill before the ship even leaves the dock. EVERYONE gets their life vests from their rooms and goes to their assigned evacuation place on the upper decks. These drills are taken very seriously!!!

Now who are you jiving with that cosmik debris?

As they should be. The 3 people who lost their lives may not have died IF they had that Safety drill.

highly speculative since we don't know how they died. They might have been struck in the head by debris which is not covered in safety drills.

I'm also not sure how much the drill would help in this case. The drill is on how to grab a life vest from your room and head to your life boat. If you are in the dining room, what do you do? Go back to your room for a vest? Go straight to the life boat? But half the life boats are under water when its listing...

It does seem odd that they don't do the drill before departing as they do in the States. But I would be more concerned with how the crew behaved during the evacuation. The key to getting the people off the boat in a situation like this is the calm, professional demeanor and assistance of the crew in directing people to a safe egress.

I took my first ever cruise 2 months ago on Costa. Was appalled by the lack of safety evacuation training. Not even a shred of official nod toward evacuation training until the next day, when we were well out into the Mediterranean. That 2nd-day "training" was farcical - only someone talking in the theater, without giving anyone any hands-on experience, no sounds of the warning horn, etc. After the talk, some of us went exploring around the ship, looking for lifeboats, etc. I kept my fingers crossed the whole trip. That being said, I was surprised by how much i enjoyed the cruise on Costa. Everything worked easily ---- we toured the clean kitchen, which put out 10,000 meals/day, perfectly fine food for such a context, much better than I anticipated; the daily tours onto shore worked efficiently; etc. SO: 1 - the Captain will probably be nailed for his lapse of judgement (we shall see...); and 2 - the Corporate owners should be held accountable for not training people properly --- other shiplines DO train people PRIOR to initial departure out to sea. What were they thinking?????
Anyway, the next cruise I take, I'll check for competent execution of safety and evacuation procedures.

Read up on what cruise ships do with waste...it's all recycled through very sophisticated equipment that make the water potable (look that up if you don't know what it means), but it's actually only used as grey water (look that one up too if you need to) for other purposes aboard the ship.

Was that a question, because I don't know!
Will they? If so, I will tell my friend if she falls over board cold isn't her worst problem.
