Disney World Lost Rides

First Posted: 01/17/12 08:43 AM ET Updated: 01/17/12 08:43 AM ET

Since the inception of the Disney parks, Disney has been known for the innovations it makes in the area of theme park attractions. Sure, It’s A Small World will always be delightfully low-tech, but rides like Soarin’ have shown how Disney can push the envelope.

Of course, progress comes at a price. And, many much-loved rides and attractions had to go extinct to make way for the newer and more thrilling. We've already taken a look at some classic lost attractions like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which will always be fan favorites, and now we're turning our attention to more obscure amusements. Here are more rides and even TV clips from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. that help us to remember the excitement of yesteryear.

What were your favorite Disney World or Disneyland attractions? Let us know in the comments below!

Enjoy a retro look at the Walt Disney World of the 1980s. Aside from the awesome hair, fashion and dated cast member uniforms, some lost Disney attractions like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Mission to Mars can be seen. It's also worth a good chuckle to see what the existing rides looked like before their modern refurbs.

I LOVE Disneyland no matter what! Although some of the rides may be taken away you always have fun. The only dark side of Disneyland are the long lines now, I think they should have a limit on how many people are at the park so everyone gets that great experience .. (you are paying $80 dollars now at the Anaheim park)... Anyways since I love Disneyland so much I definitely have to share this link on Things to do in Disney World !

They took out Alien Encounter when I was about 8, and my dad wanted me to get on it, but my mom never made me. She said it was scary. Now it just looks tacky

If You had Wings was my favorite with the Carousel of Progress close behind. Nowadays, no one is interested in where we came from and how people lived before us. They cannot imagine living without an IPod or IPad...........you know when couples talked at the restaraunt table instead of texting each other across the table and then sharing their romantic experience with everyone on Facebook, while they sit there.

i miss all the rides and shows they have gotten at disney world. i live in fl so we went to disney alot. i miss if you have wings. least they fixed the tikey birds back to old show i dont think anyone liked it. what i miss the most is the tomaarowland show they use to have between the caralsol of progress and if you had wings with the singing and dancing about all the lands at disney world.

The whole experience went to hell when they made it pay-one-price. Back when you had to buy tickets, the lines were still reasonable.

WAIT....When did they remove Mr.Toad's Wild Ride???? I was just at Disneyland last July and it was still there and running. I had heard rumors that they were going to remove it, but then decided to keep it....Have they now removed it???

Please say it is not so......Was one of my favorites as a child and my childrens now... Sad if it is true.

I was so UPSET when the Tiki Birds (Magic Kingdom) changed their original show and song! Man I used to love those birds! Those old, low tech rides are so memorable. A nostalgic ride back to my childhood days.

they just changed it back this year becouse noone liked the new show

That and because of the trouble that Gilbert Gottfrey got into with some of his public comments. He got fired as the voice of the Aflac bird and shortly after that the Tiki Bird show had an "electrical fire" upstairs which required months of refurbishment. It was then announced that the old show was being put back in. Interesting timing of events, wouldn't you agree?

I remember riding all of the rides shown except the Barbie thing. Horizons and world of motion were some of my favorites. I miss the Mr toads wild ride, body wars, and discovery island. I love the progress but do miss some of the older rides that were phased out. I'm glad carosel (spelling?) Of progress and the web way people mover are still around!

Am I the only person who remembers a ride at Disneyland where you were "shrunken" down to a microscopic size and went on an adventure through the microscopic universe? It would have been over 20 years ago when I went on that thing, but I remember something like that and it's been killing me to figure out what that thing was called.

It was probably something to do with the "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" movies. Both times that I've gone to Disney World, I've seen that there was an area of the park for the series, but it's been closed. It had giant fake grass and giant bug statues, etc., and you walk through it. I really have no idea if there was a ride or something at the end of it, since it's been closed when I've visited, but I know the walk-through area is designed to make you feel microscopic.
Hope that helps!

Yes.. it was the 'Adventure Thru Inner Space' ride by Monsanto. It was from the early 60s - 80's way before 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids'. Really cool ride.. it had the little rollaway blue hooded cars, went from water molecules to atoms down to that crazy electron tunnel .. and then the eye looking through a giant microscope lens! It still has alot of loyal fans .. check around online there's alot out there on it. Hope it helps.

I still have tickets for Disneyland and Disney World. Even a couple E tickets. A book of tickets used to cost $7.95 and included admission. Then if you had tickets left and wanted to come back, you could pay the general admission of $3.50 and use up your tickets. Today, I couldn't afford to go or take my grandchildren.
If you had wings, was my favorite, but what I liked to do was sit near the exit of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and watch the faces of the people coming out. (The ride made you believe you were headed for a head on crash with a train...but you exited instead.) It was great fun.

I remember the Lincoln theater and America the beautiful in a 360 screen theater as two interesting shows. The sub ride is also now gone. I guess that is progress.....hmmm

No it isn't, Big Corperation's lease these ride's from Disney, That is why You see Fedx embelim on Space Mountian, Eastern Airlines had "If you could fly" until they got cought in a big drug smuggleing deal in the late 1980' every ride has aVIP ROOM WHERE THE CORPERATE EXEC. CAN GO WHEN THEY & THEIR FAMILIES VISIT! Big Corperations lease the ride's so the can have their names exposed to the world! Sony runs Disney studio! There is alot of dirt in the RAT NEST
