Judd Apatow To Jerry Lewis: 'F*ck You' For 'Women Aren't Funny' At Critics' Choice Awards 2012

Bridesmaids Cast

First Posted: 01/13/12 07:25 AM ET Updated: 01/13/12 09:32 AM ET

While accepting the Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy film, "Bridesmaids" producer slammed Jerry Lewis for a sexist remark the legendary comedian once made.

"Jerry Lewis once said that he didn't think women were funny, so I'd just like to say, with all respect, 'F*ck you!'" Apatow exclaimed at the end of his speech to cheers from the audience.

Lewis made the comment in 1998 at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. He told an audience during a Q&A session that "I don't like any women comedians" and "A woman doing comedy doesn't offend me but sets me back a bit. I, as a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world."

With its all female leading cast headed up by co-writer Kristen Wiig, "Bridesmaids" scored critical raves, took in $288 million worldwide and is nominated for three Golden Globes. Though it seems silly to think that there were skeptics, its success proved to many in Hollywood that women can anchor successful broad comedies, not just the romantic comedies and "Sex and the City" films.

Apatow addressed that skepticism in an interview with the New York Times shortly after the film was released.

"Sadly, I think some of that talk was true," he said. "There are a lot of female-driven comedies on the bubble at the studios and they do look to measure how well these things do, and what levels of interest there are in certain genres. One of the reasons there was pressure is because the studios knew this movie came out very well, and if nobody bothered to go see it, they could say, 'Even when you make a really good one, nobody comes.' But because people came, the opposite lesson was learned, which is, there’s an enormous neglected community of moviegoers who want to see films like this."

I prefer female comedians as long as they don't rely on male bashing to get laughs. I don't think I ever once laughed at anything Jerry Lewis did.

Jerry lewis is a mean old, bitter has been. In recent years, his arrogance and nasty attitude, by far out shined any of his lame efforts at comedy, or even his efforts at charity. He made the Telethon so hard to watch because of his bad attitude, that I had to just change the channel.

The reverential lip service the entertainment industry pays to Jerry Lewis’ brand of “comedy” has always made me scratch my head. Yes, I thought he was funny and cute when I was 6 (I’m now 57). By the time I was 12, I began to find him offensive and off-putting, even though I wasn’t old enough to make total sense of why I no longer liked his stuff. The only exception over the years was Lewis’ performance in “King of Comedy”. He was brilliant in a role that was so obviously close to his bone. I recently watched “Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis” on Encore and thought that it was far less of a documentary than a male-centric homage to glory days, decades (and warts) removed. It was curious that nearly no mention was made of his 40-plus years hosting the MDA Telethon.

Genius? I’m not sold. Egotistical, archaic and mean-spirited? I’ll buy that.

You have got to watch the Colgate Comedy Hour with Dean on youtube- If youre not sold OK!

But that's just it. He WAS funny when he was with Dean. They were funny together. I've seen those clips. But after that... meh.

Well Seinfield said if you don't like Jerry lewis you don't really understand comedy- Can't understimate his influence. That wasn't a great doc on him but there are plenty others.

Sorry, Seinfeld was wrong. Maybe it applies to American comedy but there are other, funnier traditions out there.

When I watched Jerry Lewis' "Geisha Boy" from the 1950's I was surprised at how sexist and a little racist it was. Anyway I still thought it was funny and charming. I might even watch another Lewis movie one day. Just saying that although his comments were offensive, it probably has more to do with the time he grew up in. Even so a grown man should know better than to say that huh?

He was funny back in the day, in a really stupid kind of way. He has'nt been funny to me since the early sixties.

I can't believe there are over 1,000 replies about someone bringing up something that Jerry Lewis said 13 years ago. It would be interesting if Joan Rivers had said it.

Joan would totally say it too, she's a hoot!

It's hard to fathom all the posters who are defending Lewis after his indefensible statement. Had he made a racists statement, Apatow would've been lauded for standing up to a thick-headed bigot. But say what you want about women - we love you anyway, Jerry. I think not. Thanks Judd for standing up to someone who was *once* above reproach.
02:49 PM on 01/16/2012
But don't you understand , he didn't say anything sexist- Just that he was uncomfortable with women doing gross things because he was from an old fashioned era where women were put on a pedestal. When he clarified that he did talk about funny women- Lucille, Whoopi etc.
Here is the transcript of the Larry King interview - go below about half way down where he discussed those comments.

Jerry started the telethons because he makes a percentage of the revenue brought in as the producer. The man does not have an altruistic nor funny bone in his body. He's a misogynistic old-world "good ole' boy" relic of a long bygone era.

Yes!!! but he was no pervert. And he did do something even if he got paid. True I was critical of Lewis but if the present day comics had to leave out the F word they would becomes mimes/\,\.
04:33 PM on 01/16/2012
Jerry Lewis has never profited from the MDA telethons. Where have you found any evidence to refute that? You should be prepared to back it up with facts when you make a statement like that.

Call him all sorts of rotten names, and some people might agree with you, but you'll probably never see, in your lifetime, someone who comes close to giving back what Jerry Lewis has given to humanity. Sure, he makes people cringe with things he says sometimes, but he also has done something truly profound and immensely altruistic. But just because you don't like him or find him funny, you choose to say that he is not altruistic. Easy for you to say. Why don't you try giving back?
08:26 PM on 01/16/2012
Let's hope Apatow never sponsors "Judds Kids" given how much Jerry's Kids has set back the treatment of people with disabilities.

The real question is 'Why did the media pick up on this?'
11:54 AM on 01/15/2012
Judd is simply jealous of the fact he can never be remotely close to as famous as Lewis.

And has he really been stewing on this for the last 13 years?
08:10 PM on 01/16/2012
Riiiiight. Judd really cares about fame and is totally jealous of Jerry Lewis. Glad you shared this info with us for free when you could have sold it to People Magazine or Us Weekly for a cool profit.

Judd Apatow disagrees with Jerry Lewis? Jerry Lewis has forgotten more about entertainment, movie production, and the arts than Apatow will ever know.
08:27 PM on 01/16/2012
Let's hope he's forgotten that "entertainment." The dinosaur is extinct.
