South Florida Fishermen Find 10-Foot Endangered Sawfish Near Biscayne National Park (WATCH)

WATCH: Strange Creature Found Floating In Florida Waters

On Thursday, while fishing out of Black Point Marina near Biscayne National Park, South Florida fishermen came across a very rare sea creature -- the endangered sawfish or carpenter shark.

When the boaters found it, it was already dead and believed to have been abandoned in the water by another fisherman. Watch the WSVN7 video above for the full story.

According to National Geographic, the strange-looking fish, which is actually part of the ray family, uses its saw-like snout to detect movements. It can even suss out the pulsing heartbeat of nearby prey. The fish also use their tooth-lined snouts to side swipe smaller fish, cutting them in half.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature reports that the species is already extinct in the Mediterranean and northeast Atlantic ocean. Florida state law has protected the sawfish since 1992.
