South Carolina Polls: Mitt Romney Maintains Lead

First Posted: 01/13/2012 5:14 pm Updated: 01/13/2012 7:41 pm

WASHINGTON -- Three new surveys of South Carolina Republicans, all conducted since Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, show that the week's events have served to give new momentum to Ron Paul, sharply reverse Rick Santorum's brief rise and leave Mitt Romney running narrowly ahead of Newt Gingrich. While South Carolina remains close and potentially volatile, Romney is positioned for an unprecedented sweep of the first three Republican contests of 2012.

The new polls include automated, recorded voice telephone polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports and Democratic Party-affiliated Public Policy Polling (PPP) and a live interviewer telephone poll from the American Research Group, all conducted from Wednesday to Friday.

Although the surveys differ in their methods, they yield at least four consistent findings. First, all three show Romney with a narrow lead and an almost identical level of support from likely Republican primary voters (28 to 29 percent) that is essentially unchanged from surveys conducted last week before the New Hampshire primary.

Second, all three polls show Newt Gingrich running second, with 21 to 25 percent of the vote, and all three show Gingrich with very slight gains (1 to 3 percentage points) since last week.

Third, all of the polls show Ron Paul making significant gains since last week, although the ARG survey now gives Paul a bigger share of the vote (20 percent) than Rasmussen and PPP (16 percent and 15 percent respectively).

Finally, all three show big drops for Rick Santorum, who had surged in South Carolina following his near tie in Iowa on Jan. 3. The two automated polls give Santorum 14 percent to 16 percent of the vote; the live interviewer ARG poll shows him dropping to just 7 percent.

These trends are illustrated by the chart below, featuring the HuffPost Pollster trend lines based on all public polls in South Carolina. Our current estimate of the standings gives Romney a roughly four point lead over Gingrich (28.4 to 24.3 percent), with Paul (16.7 percent) moving ahead of Santorum (13.9 percent) for second place.

The PPP analysis highlights results it describes as potential "trouble ahead for Romney." These include a small decline in Romney's favorable rating (from 60 to 57 percent) and the results of a new question that found 34 percent saying they would "like the Republican nominee for president to be Mitt Romney" and 58 percent saying they would prefer "someone else."

Romney comes out ahead, however, on a series of hypothetical two-way choices that PPP posed to South Carolina's likely Republican primary voters. He leads by wide margins on match-ups against Gingrich (48 to 37 percent), Santorum (48 to 39 percent), Rick Perry (56 to 31 percent) and Ron Paul (63 to 28 percent). So while a majority of South Carolina Republicans might prefer "someone else" -- or may be using that question to simply restate that their first choice is someone other than Romney -- most will now choose Romney over any of the actual alternatives.

Consistent with that finding is that Romney is currently the most popular candidate on the PPP survey. His favorable rating in South Carolina (57 percent), remains higher than that of Santorum (53 percent), Gingrich (51 percent), Perry (44 percent), Paul (38 percent) and Jon Huntsman (34 percent).

The results leave open considerable potential for late shifts in support, with a third of the voters in the PPP poll (35 percent) saying they might still change their minds. Not surprisingly, that uncertainty is greatest among those supporting conservative candidates Rick Santorum (46 percent) and Rick Perry (48 percent).

But that said, Romney enjoys an enviable position with just a week remaining before voting in a state long considered one of his toughest. Once South Carolina votes, only a tiny fraction of the delegates will have been chosen, but a win for Romney there would leave few significant obstacles in his path to the Republican nomination.

Wait till the end of the week, after debates.
1. Senator Demint endorsed Ron Paul today, 16 Jan.
2. State Senator Davis from Beaufort(coastal area) endorsed Ron Paul.
That's two heavy-weights inside of South Carolina.
3. Ron Paul can keep his cool, stick to basic message, and not get drawn into an argument during the debate.....
It is quite possible that Ron Paul WINS in SC.

Ron Paul just got an endorsement from Senator Tom Davis. That's quite meaningful for South Carolina.

Or, to put it in the words of Rick Santorum (August 2011):
‎"To get an endorsement from someone like Tom Davis is a big deal. It would speak volumes to folks and make them take notice and give us a look."

But,, it went to Ron Paul, sorry Rick

Are SC Voters the First to Say: JUST MAKE IT STOP?

Is the Reuters poll giving Romney a 21 point lead in SC an anomaly or will it be supported by follow-on polls? We will have to wait & see. If mirrored in additional polls, it may be an indicator of early voter fatigue.

With every advertising slot purchased in SC, one can only imagine what viewers see on their TVs every 5 minutes. Unemployment persists above 8%, home prices are down 5.4% over last year, & wages are stagnate, voters know things are bad. Add onto this an endless flow of ads reminding them of these facts, & telling them how bad the other Republican candidate is, it's not difficult to imagine SC voters simply saying; just make it stop & let's get on with this.

A coalescing around Mitt Romney, warts & all, may be an acceptance by SC voters that he may not be their ideal candidate but they are eager to move forward towards change. If this trend spills out of SC, it could signal trouble for both incumbents & President Obama.

The President's approval rating hovers around the mid 40s, the economy is barely inching forward, & housing prices are projected to continue to decline in 2012. With ten months to go until the Presidential election it's not hard to fathom Republican voters being joined with independents & dissatisfied democrats in saying - just make it stop & there has to be change.

I dont think anyone wants to coalesce around Romney, now or ever. He will be an absolute failure for the GOP.

I will tell you what just went behind in the polls in Ca. The giant hole to throw money into, called the Bullet Train.

Seems despite Jerry Brown and Diane Feinstein doubling down on the project despite costs that are rising like a moon rocket and reports by the legislative analyst that states the revenue flows projected will never come. The people are waking up.

53% say it is time to can the bullet train.
33% that ignore the news and or union construction workers and engineers support it.
14% either dont know or dont care cant read or were too drunk to answer.

It will be interesting to see if the train to nowhere gets built. That way the thriving communities of Fresno and Bakersfield will have a billion dollar rail line and be the envy of all small cities everywhere. Think of the tourism opportunities to view oil wells, truck terminals, and refineries in Bakersfield and in the same day take a tour of the IRS Service Center in Fresno. Taking walking tours of blighted areas is fun and It just doesnt get any better than that.

All depends on JP Morgan and Blackrock maintaining the advertisment dollars. Maybe it's time for Goldman Sachs to step aside and let another Banker Primary access to the Whitehouse. We can call it 'spreading the wealth'.

the tax returns will soon be at the various IRS service centers, as April is coming soon.

But maybe if you are one of the 53% that dont pay taxes or only file to get a 100% refund of all your witholdings, maybe you dont care.

Come on South Carolina and fellow Americans – could you please vote for a candidate that wants to put America and Americans first. Vote for the only candidate that wants to restore personal liberties, end foreign aid, reduce spending, will follow the constitution. All the others don’t even have a solid plan, get their donations from Goldman-Sachs, made money from Freddie Mack and Fannie May, one of them was voted most corrupt senator, and the other was kicked out as Speaker of the House, 2 are not even on the ballot in all 52 states. We need the right guy!!!
07:07 PM on 01/14/2012
Yep! I'm voting Ron Paul!

So glad I'm not giving Obama another vote. Or dime.

To the Right: Romney is a careerist with no core values, but the GOP candidates with core values have all ruined their chances with their big mouths and willful ignorance so you're stuck with the biggest RINO of them all.

RomneyCare is to the left of ObamaCare, it includes a public option. You listen to Mitt's excuses for being more progressive than this President that The Economist recently labeled a "timid centrist", and you know you have to swallow them and vote for Mitt's Big Lie because of stupid hatred of a Democratic President who has constantly frustrated his progressive supporters by compromising every time he meets any resistance.

You should enjoy having a Democratic President who won't try Democratic policies instead of electing a Republican President who will walk away from yours.

When looking at the GOP field, excepting Romney, the poll indicates to know them is to loathe them. Romney's flat numbers seem to say to know him is to ignore him.

Romney and Gingrich are leading? I've seen these types over and over again in American politics, and if they get elected, we are in for the same old unconscious narrow-mindedness of:

Top Priorities
----------------------------------------------------
1) Continuing the concentration of wealth into the fewest hands as possible.
2) Neglect the health and well-being of life and environment.
3) Continued high defense spending to fund our police-the-world arrogance.
4) Continue the oppressive, self-righteous approach to social issues.
5) Continue to neglect infrastructure and education.
6) Continue to disregard the need for regulatory agencies with adequate oversight.

I'm in the top tax bracket and pay the max AH. I don't have the right-offs, the favoritism, the lobyists, the offshore havens, the AH in congress to do my bidding and make sure I dont have to give back anything for the infrastructure I disproportionaitely use. I don't need @X! from them or you!
