The 1 Percent Paint A More Nuanced Portrait Of The Rich - NYTimes.com

www.nytimes.com:

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Adam Katz is happy to talk to reporters when he is promoting his business, a charter flight company based on Long Island called Talon Air.

But when the subject was his position as one of America’s top earners, he balked. Seated at a desk fashioned from a jet fuel cell, wearing a button-down shirt with the company logo, he considered the public relations benefits and found them lacking: “It’s not very popular to be in the 1 percent these days, is it?”

The BIGGEST FIGHTERS for the 1% are the cancer of our society. Koch Industries' units have stolen oil from federal lands, rigged prices with competitors, paid bribes to win contracts in six countries, sold oil equipment to Iran despite a U.S. ban, been charged with releasing tons of cancer-causing benzene into the atmosphere and have had five criminal convictions in the U.S. and Canada.
Meanwhile, brothers Charles and David Koch have relentlessly pushed for less government regulation, ( deregulation created our crisis says Alan Greenspan) while the Koch's pumping millions of dollars from their foundations into right-wing groups like the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute. Moreover, Koch Industries has spent $50 million on lobbying since 2006. The brothers are also the leading financiers of the Tea Party movement, and David Koch founded — and funded — Americans for Prosperity, which has trained Tea Party activists and heavily promoted the movement.

I was talking about the Republican candidates. How come you did not mention Obama. You seem to cherry pick who ever you want for your views. I am talking about the job of President. I do not think I am the smartest person in the world but I sure like to read about both sides of issues before I decide. I care more about mankind and the environment as opposed to being selfish. Republicans care more about themselves, the upper class and religion. I just disagree with everything they say.

The members of Congress are in the top 1 %. The Question should be raised and answered: "are they exempt from being taxed more because they are part of the Govt"?

When unemployment of 15 million Ameriicans---to 4 million Americans who have jobs with less than 32 hours---and then the other 10 million Americans who can't find jobs--people took notice. The financiers began watching DC--Americans are hurting.

One other important thing to remember---Obama's fund raisers @ $37,000 per plate---and has wined and dined with the elite--flying around from fund raisers in CHICAGO--NY--SAN FRANCISCO has already happened. Obama said: "I plan to use some of the funds--but other funds will be used to make sure Democrats get control of the Congress again. Or, Obama wants to make sure if the Republican President becomes President--that the Dems will be there to stop progress in America.

When you think about money and politicians--think about all those fund raisers of Obama which begin at $37.000 PER PLATE.

WHO is responsible that a fund raising is necessary to win elections and the obsene monies necessary to conduct a campaign ?

OUR SYSTEM that's who. Not OBAMA's FAULT this system has been in place for decades and unless congress changes the way we conduct our elections.....you shall not see change in the costs at all.

Some facts the liberal doesn't want known:

The 1% pays 37% of all the taxes
the 1% account for 30% of all charity contributions.

Something to consider.

Should the tax loopholes be closed - MOST DEFINATELY! Do that the the 1% would probably pay close to 50% of all taxes.
11:18 AM on 01/17/2012
The rich definitely pay more in taxes than the rest of us and libs just don't want to admit that. The 47% who pay no federal income tax simply want more. Like the OWS protester with $60K in student loans for a social work degree wants us to pay her bills.

The rich are taxed at a much higher rate than the majority of the population. but its a proven fact they dont pay as much in comparison. Sure, 15% for someone making 10 million is more than 15% for someone making 40,000, but there are a heck of a lot more making 40k and less than there is 10 million and more.
So saying the rich pay a higher % is false, they never pay anywhere near the tax rate they always quote.

and in my opinion, its not all, or even a majority of the top 1% who are the problem. Its the small portion , the upper % of the 1% who screw even the lower 1% as well as the 99%, and who pull most the political strings in DC and around our country
02:09 AM on 01/18/2012
Go to IRS.gov and do some basic research....not all income is taxed at the same rate......long term capital gains are taxed at a different rate than ordinary income....then go to investopedia and learn what a capital gain actually is.....then sound somewhat smart next time you post......God Bless

It just started!!! Morgan Stanley, the investment bank, has capped bonuses above 250k, with only 125k being given out this year. Goldman Sach's capped its partners bonus's, and hopefully it will spread as these two are the trend setters. OWS has had a profound effect on the American culture of wallstreet greed. Finally, they are starting to pare back compensation of the 1%, but will corporate America follow suit? Watch Hewlett Packard and Home Depot, two major big payers of their serial CEO's to see. Will Apple cut its near four hundred million dollar payout to its CEO? Will he reject such a huge payout? I won't buy Apple stock,, ever, till it does.

It just started, My bother in law and 4 of his co workers just gave notice at Morgan. They are leaving to start a new investment bank where their income won't be limited by ceo's that pay attention to trivia like OWS. Seems they don't need Morgan as much as Morgan needs them.
11:30 PM on 01/16/2012
I would encourage them all to leave so that those that remain will have different values like building the business to serve the clients and better align their incentive package so that we can get back to building mainstreet again.

The 1% are Americans who risked it all and became succesfull and are envyed by the progressives who think if Obama taxes them more thier miserable lives will improve. well if thats the case Obama just asked congress for another 1.2 trillion dollars, so looks like you might get another block of government cheese

no one has got more gov cheese than the corporations and the upper 1%. And really? risk it all to get rich? OPM is what many of them have risk.

Envy the rich? Not in todays America.. No on your life.. Wouldnt want to be them if you paid me. Who in their right mind wants to spend money on security because everyone wants to shoot them? What a life? Id rather stay comfortable and alive than rich and panicking that either someone wants to take it away, or slay me for what I did to them to get rich..

We don't hate the rich; we hate the republicans for not allowing us to tax them just a little bit more all while they complain about the deficit they created and try to tax the poor.
06:39 PM on 01/16/2012
Too funny, I made the 1% this year, according to this article. Almost doubled my income (the only time it will ever happen), worked my butt off just to stay ahead of the game. Just did my taxes, wound up giving everything but $15K of all that income to the 99%. I think I'll pack it in next year and let them support me from now on.
11:22 AM on 01/17/2012
Yeah, tax them a "little" more and then when that is not enough, tax them a "little" more and so on. Sap all the resources of those who know how to make money and we can all be on the government dole. That is after all what liberal elites want -- total control over what we do.

I appreciate your anger and I am sure I cannot change your mind, but you might consider that under Eisenhower and Reagan the marginal tax rates for the richest were gigantic compared to what is needed today to balance the budget. I could go on, but I would like to encourage you to read comments in here, instead.

bet you cant honestly name one Rich person who isn't on the Gov dole themselves. Tax breaks, bail outs, special perks and their own personal politician doing special favors for them that the non rich would never get.. Its all the same thing, whether its the Gov buying a poor family some cheese, or giving the rich guy special treatment and savings.
The rich scream they want gov out of business, but they could never survive with out the gov working for them to sway the playing field in their favor.

I am a part of the one %

when working !

and part of the 99 % when not working :)

yes it can all change in the blink of a human eye :)

I for one have learned a great lesson about how our people are really thought of in this country we call the land of the FREE

millions of people lose there jobs in a matter of months

Then media calls our people lazy couch potatoes

ewwhh thus slandering million under the guise they want some thing for nothing !!

the rich call everyone else lazy. Because they actually think they are better and work harder than anyone else. Which is all a lie, but its how they see things. Sociopaths are like that you know.

So...they employ people?
06:46 PM on 01/16/2012
I made the 1%, according to the definitions of this article, by by working my butt off and adding a second job, almost doubling my income this year. Can't say I ride in many limousines, my newest car is a 2004 Ford with 195,000 miles on it. Just did my taxes today, gave almost all of that income back to the 99% except for about $15K. Yippee! I'm rich. Some of you people are so misguided its sad.
07:52 PM on 01/16/2012
Speaking of hispanic nannies, it amazes how many people in Bel Air , Beverly Hills , Holmby Hills have illegal hispanic nannies . Is thereb no limit on cheapness ? If you make a million a year , how about redistributing the wealth by hiring a US citizen and paying a fair wage ?

I think it means the same rate, but there are so many plans that you have to know which one they are refering to. In my state it is illegal to have a graduated state income tax. It helps prevent the type of class envy that the current administration is using to cover up their incompetence.

Rate. So don't worry you still get to see the wealthy pay more I taxes. It just does not punish a person for trying to increase their wealth
