Meryl Streep: Golden Globes Winner For Best Actress Drama 2012

First Posted: 01/15/12 10:36 PM ET Updated: 01/16/12 12:53 AM ET

Meryl Streep has won the Golden Globe for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.

The legendary actress earned the award for her starring turn as Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister in British history, in the biopic "The Iron Lady." Streep fully immersed herself in the role, slipping beneath layers of makeup and taking on Thatcher's signature English accent to wow critics and quiet any doubts that an American woman from New Jersey could capably handle such an iconic role.

The win puts her in the clear pole position to win what would be her third career Academy Award, and her first in 30 years.

As always, Meryl Streep played Margret Thatcher with grace and perfection. She is a truly remarkable actor. However, I found the film, The Iron Lady' a tad bit disturbing in it's portrayal of Margret Thatcher. The film focuses more on Ms. Thatcher's decline in her later years than on when she served as Prime Minister. I don't recall any film made portraying a male leader in this way. Margret Thatcher broke more barriers in a male dominated political arena AND in Great Britain no less. Depicting Ms. Thatcher in her declining years reflecting back on her ‘rein‘ as Prime Minister took away the respect, dignity, and the important role she played in history, especially for women.

BTW, my husband came away from this film with the same opinion.

I was an awestruck freshman in Vassar's Drama Department when Meryl Streep was a senior. The first time I saw her perform was in an operetta Christmas House Parties weekend in the days when we would import our dates from Yale, Princeton and Williams.

From those days until now, I can truly say her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in "Iron Lady", is the performance of her career. In my many years in journalism, I have never said this about any of her other performances. This is the performance of her career.

She deserves the Academy Award for Best Actress. She truly does.

She was surprised that she won. She was stumbling/babbling because she thought and wanted Viola Davis to win. If you look at her when she won, she looks over to Viola's table with sadness. And in her speech, she was trying to say Viola Davis deserves the award without upsetting the industry and ruining the rest of her career. Actors usually don't do well after they denounce an award win or decline the award entirely. After all that babbling, though, she managed to say "I love you, Viola."

But how could she be surprised she won when she was the leading favorite to win it? There was a big article about phony acceptance speeches and they mentioned this specific fact.

Congrats to Merly. One of the greatest actresses of all times (okay, you can insert the word 'actors': she can duke it out with the big boys too). Just amazing and always pushing the acting envelope.

Thank goodness she won. Now let's hope she takes home another Oscar - finally! I'm so tired of the syndrome 'anyone but Meryl.' Everyone was beginning to say that this was 'Viola Davis' year.' Viola Davis' performance was fine but not nearly the tour-de-force that Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher was.

Sometimes the actor doesnt need an award to be the best in the business. Just to be recognized by their peers and their audiences is the best award they need. Meryl Streep is that actress. Its always nice on a personal basis for that actor to at least "know" that her peers and audiences come to see her perform. If we didnt come, she would know it. I am glad that she won, now she can wait another 30 years and we would still love her!

I'm sure that there are other great actors but in my opinion, in my lifetime, she's the best actress I've seen, with her glasses or without.

My local papers predicted that Viola Davis would win this category.
I did see "The Help" and although Davis' performance was very good, I thought her co-star who won, did an even better job.
Meryl Streep just might win the Oscar next month and if she does she will follow in the footsteps of another great actress, Katherine Hepburn. Hepburn won her first Best Actress Oscar in the early 30's for "Morning Glory" and waited 30 yrs to win her second Oscar. If Streep wins it will be I believe exactly 30 yrs since her win for "Sophies Choice"

Meryl Streep is the best actress of our time. She can take on anythng & play anyone. No one can touch her, No one. I am so happy she won, well deserved.

This award is just advertising fodder for her movie that was just released. I guess, only movies released in the last month or two qualify.

never one for moderation...

You're right it happens that way, but not for the reason you suggest. It's not that only movies that came out in the last two months qualify, or that they conspire to economically advantage one movie over another--they release films that they know will work as award season bait in the winter because they're aware what kinds of films will win.
11:15 AM on 01/17/2012
I think they do release them for economic benefit, and frankly, the later movies are either better or more fresh in the Academys' and Associations' minds. Even if they watch all qualifying films in the same window, seeing commercials everyday about the latest films surely can influence a vote.

No one else has a chance when Meryl is in the running.

Of the sixteen times Meryl was nominated for an oscar, she won two. Fourteen times another actress won. Of the twenty-three times she was nominated for a Globe, she one seven times. sixteen other actresses beat her.
