Martin Luther King Assassination: James Earl Ray's Lawyers Proposed Arguing There Was A Conspiracy

By JOE EDWARDS   01/17/12 05:47 PM ET   AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- James Earl Ray doubted a jury would believe a defense proposal to blame the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on a conspiracy, according to letters he wrote to his lawyer as he tried to win a trial and withdraw his own guilty plea in the 1968 slaying.

The letters are among documents that are going up for auction later this month from the estate of the late Jack Kershaw, a Nashville attorney who represented Ray in the mid-1970s.

Ray pleaded guilty in Memphis in 1969 to killing the civil rights leader and was sentenced to 99 years in prison, but recanted the confession three days later. He died in prison in 1998. Kershaw died in 2010.

In one letter, Ray responds to plans by one of his other attorneys to write a book alleging that white racists conspired with government agencies to kill King.

"Conversely what I have learned based on what evidence in this area we have, whites of that persuasion were most likely not involved and while that type allegation would naturally appeal to the large publishing companies, (I) am concerned that if their (sic) were not considerable evidence in support, the allegation might not be taken well with the type persons who sit on juries," Ray wrote.

The transcript was released by Case Antiques Inc., Auctions & Appraisals, which will auction the documents on Jan. 28 in Knoxville. The Ray archive carries a presale estimate of $8,000 to $10,000, the auction house said. Papers, photographs and audiotapes from the estate also will be auctioned.

Gerald Posner, who wrote the 1998 book "Killing the Dream," said Tuesday that the document offers a rare look at Ray's views about a jury at the time.

"It's not widely circulated as part of history," Posner said in a telephone interview. "What's Ray is doing is telling his attorney that even HE doesn't think a jury of 12 average people will buy his story."

In one of the papers, Ray also discussed his media image:

"One of my problems, I believe, with interviews is that I attempt to look at the case from a legal standpoint while the reports apparently want to hear the emotional statements (not guilty_ framed_persecuted_sob-sister routine)."

Ray, who was white, claimed as he sought a trial that he was forced into pleading guilty. But news accounts at that point showed that the judge asked him five times if his plea was voluntary.

Ray also claimed after his confession that a mysterious man named "Raoul" was responsible for the slaying. However, Ray's fingerprints were found on the rifle used to kill King as the civil rights leader stood on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel.

The King assassination set off riots across the country. Years later, the King family said it supported a trial for Ray, and King's son Dexter said he believed Ray was innocent of the crime.

There is absolutely no credible evidence that JFK,RFK,or MLK were murdered as a result of a conspiracy and there never will be.Events that never happened don't leave any evidence.
01:05 PM on 01/19/2012
At this point it would seem to have been a conspiratorial fact.Good Ole boys he'll they still play you's gott's to go along to get's along.

The article doesn't even mention which lawyers. His first team was more sympathetic to his cause, then he was convinced to change to Percy Foreman, who told him he'd be executed if he didn't plead guilty. The question is how this jobless escaped convict financed two months of flying around Europe with very professionally forged passports and IDs, all on his own without any help. And why would he be so stupid as to leave his gun and a radio easily traceable to him in a doorway after the shooting? It's pretty clear he was set up as a patsy.

I believe that all 3 assassinations, JFK, MLK and RFK were all done by the same machine. That machine was well oiled and maintained by J. Edgar Hoover.

(As my mother would say, has said), He had to have done something for them to name that building after him?

Greetings "Mogo BK":

Hoover was the national security threat that I implied in my earlier post. The Statute of Limitations for Secret Records has expired. These records are now available. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! I just noticed the spiritually coincidence in the placement of the letter "K" in your name and JFK, MLK and RFK.

I am honored to be your first Fan.

Greetings Friends:

"Conspiracy" is an over used word that is often misused. It is not a sinister word as the government wants everyone to believe and it should not be misused for the discounted or disbelieved actions of others.

In fact, EVERYTHING is a conspiracy when two or more people agree to engage in an activity. This post meets the legal definition of a "conspiracy"!

America is sleeping through the revolution!

Just... follow the money. ... When Dr. King started speaking out against the global elite, and the injustice they inflict on all of humanity though orchestrated wars and economic oppression, He rocked the boat, their power structure. When Dr. King opposed the war, when he rallied people to oppose the war, he was threatening the bottom lines of some of the largest defense contractors in this country. This was about money!

Posner is most likely an intelligence asset, disinfo specialist. Ray's brother wrote a book and says that Ray belonged to a special unit in the military and later the records were altered so that it appeared he DID NOT belong to that special unit. MLK, JFK, RFK, John Lennon - same story from the Establishment each time - a "crazed loner" just decided to kill each one of them, after which the "crazed loner" is either shot dead on National TV in a secure building surrounded by 50 cops, or locked away for decades until they die.

Greetings Friends:

James Earl Ray did not assassinate Dr. King. Dr. King's leadership that crossed all demographic and economic barriers was perceived as a threat to our national security. For this reason it was easier for employees in our government (We the People are the real government) to blindly follow orders and to eliminate the threat and concern.

The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ("FBI") proclaimed that this country was not big enough for two leaders. This is coded language for the authorization of the elimination of the threat or concern. In America this is a common practice. Besides, there's more than one way to assassinate a person.

In America we have freedom of speech as long as we say what is expected of us! For the insight found herein, I expect this post to be censured and its author to face "disciplinary measures" for his outspoken efforts.

Greetings "Drill Thrall":

Under the Freedom of Information Act you or anyone else can get all of the information you need to satisfy your request for additional information. After you have satisfied your insatiable request for information what will you do with it?

We the People cannot force federal employees to indict, prosecute or even investigate. Besides the individuals involved are all dead!

For example, according to one person directly involved in this national security "special assignment", trained military assassins, scouts and snipers executed the assassination; cleaned up; cleared and modified the murder scene then turned it over to the local police. James Earl Ray was nothing more than a patsy to enable the government for public relations reasons to close the case in the minds' of the American People. Sad but true!

Ongoing since 1949, open hearings have been held in Washington, DC on dealing with the issue of how to handle Americans who criticize the United States Government. In 1971, Senator Kennedy proclaimed at his hearing before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary that "...what is at stake here is the government's ability to intimidate its critics." Assassination is the final step in a nine step government process. All of this information and much more is available in our federal archieves.

My Friend, some personal research on your part would answer any doubt that you or anyone else may have! HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!

I'm not saying that I believe in conspiracy angle, but at the time J Edgar Hoover definitely had a file on King, not to mention its common knowledge that he hated the Kennedys. I'm sure there were many powerful and wealthy people that didn't want King or the Kennedys upsetting the apple cart. Just saying something to think about.

Hoover had a file on half the country and everyone in Hollywood.

I can't believe they still trot Gerald Posner out for comment on anything to do with the King or Kennedy assassinations. The man had to quit his job as editor of the Daily Beast after numerous cases of plagiarism were uncovered. Then more plagiarism was revealed in his books, as well as cases of falsifyxing and changing the wording of witnesses statements, and printing interviews witnesses claimed never took place. The man has zero credibility, yet even the huffpost seems to be unaware of that.

Greetings "RoyalJelly":

I bet you don't even know what "royaljelly" is!

If we are talking about the NOW, then who gets to say whether or not Mr. Posner has any "credibility" or not. In the nine step process of government assassination I posted about earlier this morning, character or credibility is the first step that the government will take through people like you. Mr. Posner's credibility or lack thereof is not the issue. The ability or inability to reason for self may be.

YOU NEED TO WAKE UP!!!!!

Not even Dr. King's family believe James Earl Ray was responsible for the murder. Many years ago, I read his full account of everything leading up to the killing. I believe him. He was set up as a patsy, just as Oswald was.

There has been several conspiracies in this country. We may never know for sure. They are all 'inside jobs.' John Lennon & Marilyn Monroe I think were conspiracy murders, too.

John Lennon had ceased his anti-war activities when he was shot at the age of 40. And Mark David Chapman was clearly the killer. Now Monroe? That one will never be solved.

That's not surprising, given both the nature of his kids and the conspiracy-prone nature of those who feel targeted as perpetually among the underclass. I've heard some truly wacko theories on a range of issues, not just King but where AIDS "really" came from in order to wipe out the black race, etc...

""The nature of his kids....""? I don't understand what you mean by this. Kings wife was in agreement that Ray was not the killer, it wasn't just his kids that thought so.

The most wacko theory I've heard about where aids came from is a monkey who somehow spread it to humans. AIDS was created in a US laboratory. Big pharma cleaned up on that one, of course.

MLK, JFK, RFK, Paul Wellstone, Mel Carnahan all believed in and wanted social justice with dreams for a better America. Why did they all die prematurely?

There are no leaders in America today that speak about dreams of a better future for America and Americans. Those that had dreams died prematurely.

Ask why.
08:59 AM on 01/18/2012
Wellstone went down in a plane crash with his family, are you implying that was a gov conspiracy too? I totally agree on the rest, and those questions have been asked, but Wellstone?

There are people who believe it was a "heat ray" that was used to kill Wellstone, and that it was done on orders from Bush. Of course the guy who says that makes his living on teaching, running a webite and publishing books dedicated to Kennedy conspiracies.

When Dr. King began to question the legitimacy of the movement he allegedly headed, his handlers discovered a way to do away with him and make him a martyr simultaneously.

I've heard more than once and from more than one source that Jesse Jackson was the contact for MLK's group in the conspiracy. He was promised its leadership and future successes in life if he assisted with the assassination.

I know someone who knew Mr. Jackson at the time of the MLK assasination. He said Jackson was more interested in liining up press interviews and getting the 'right' media there than grieving. He is a scheming manipulator, in my opinion.

Looked more like the chief was paranoid...and an overpaid womanizer...
