(RNS) Growing up in rural parts of the American West, Nadja Adolf's libertarian streak developed early on.

"When you come from a countryside that can kill you," said Adolf, a Muslim convert in her late 50s, "there is a strong emphasis on individual rights, a strong emphasis on self-reliance, and an emphasis on helping each other out."

That attitude is part of the reason Adolf is drawn to the presidential campaign of Ron Paul, the maverick Republican congressman from Texas who is fighting to stay alive in the Republican primaries.

While some political observers question whether Paul has the staying power and widespread appeal to win the nomination, his campaign has proven unique in one respect: he's drawing serious support from Muslims.

After abandoning the GOP in droves during the George W. Bush presidency, some Muslims say Paul is the kind of Republican who could draw them back and seriously challenge their loyalty to President Obama.

Adolf, who converted to Islam in May 2001, learned about Paul in 2004 during the congressman's opposition to the Patriot Act, which he argued allows the government the right to spy on citizens. Paul also opposed the National Defense Authorization Act, which was recently signed into law by Obama and allows the government to indefinitely imprison U.S. citizens suspected, but not proven guilty, of terrorist activity.

"I'm a fairly old-school rural Westerner, and I am a firm believer in individual rights, and I do not understand how a government can even pretend to have the power to detain a citizen or spy on them without warrant," said Adolf.

Paul, a 76-year-old Baptist, couldn't agree more.

The renegade Republican has piqued Muslim interest with promises to extract America from foreign wars, cut aid to Israel, and protect civil liberties. There are at least four "Muslims for Ron Paul" Facebook pages, and a scan of Paul's political donors shows many common Muslim names, like Mohammed, Ali and Ahmed.

Paul's position on civil liberties resonates with many younger Muslims, including Zahra Siddiqui, an 18-year-old political science major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"These laws are obviously directed at policing Muslims," Siddiqui said. "Ron Paul knows how to differentiate between Muslims and terrorists, and he would never sacrifice any citizen's liberties over security."

Paul's promise to get the U.S. out of Afghanistan and other foreign conflicts also appeals to Siddiqui, whose family is from Pakistan and who worries that U.S. drone strikes there could escalate into war. Like other Muslim Paul supporters, Siddiqui said the Texas congressman is the only candidate willing to get tough with Israel.

"He has a deep understanding of how detrimental our foreign policy has been in Islamic countries," Siddiqui said. "Ron Paul will stop the large amount of foreign aid given to Israel and will discontinue rushing to Israel's defense when it engages in oppressing the Palestinian people."

Some American Muslims say they've been let down by Obama, especially after investing such high hopes after the 2008 election.

"We've been burned again and again," said Rizwan Kadir, a financial consultant in suburban Chicago who brought his daughter to the election booth and voted for Obama four years ago. "I'm very disappointed."

Kadir is unsure whether he will give Obama a second chance, but he is confident that he could never vote for any of the Republican candidates -- except Paul. "If it came down to him and Obama, I don't know," Kadir said.

Paul's Muslim supporters say it's not all about foreign policy or civil liberties. They also make the case that Islam, founded by a prophet who was a successful merchant, also has a soft spot for free markets.

Following a natural disaster that caused the price of commodities to soar, Prophet Muhammad rejected price controls, said Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, founder of the Minaret of Freedom Institute in Bethesda, Md., whose mission includes exposing Muslims to free-market thought.

"Allah grants plenty or shortage," Muhammad said, according to Islamic tradition. "He is the sustainer and real price maker."

It's the kind of small-government, go-it-alone approach that resonates with Adolf's frontier mindset.

"I think there are some very strong libertarian values in Islam, but many Muslims don't see them," said Adolf. "If it's not causing harm to the community, then its really nobody's business."

"Muslims Say Ron Paul Is Their Kind Of Republican"

C'mon! Enough with the crazy muslims stories. What sort of sorry brain-injured group would have Paul as their kind of anything?

And, it seems to be an article about four muslims who pluck bits they like from the bed of Paul's looney policy truck.

What a well written and insightful comment.

lol it is a way for the right wingers to ensure that everything he states (which much of it is true) he won't get heard or elected. Ron Paul does not support giving Israel money or any other country for that matter. Few muslims heard this now all of a sudden everything else he says has no merit.

American foreign policy is greatly influenced by the very powerful Israeli lobby. The congress should have to declare war for America to go to war. I agree with Ron Paul's foreign policy no favortism shown to any foreign nation talk and trade with other nations but stay out of there affairs. Also Paul has no loyalty to any lobbyist he has his beliefs and has been the same for thirty years.

Not suprising considering he is the most anti-israel presidential candidate on the ballot
12:13 PM on 01/21/2012
He is actually the only candidate that supports Israel's right to sovereignty. Which is what Israel wants and told congress they wanted. So, I would say that he is the most pro-sovereignty candidate. But, you don't seem to realize that the US gives more money to countries surrounding Israel then it does to Israel.
08:38 PM on 01/31/2012
He is pro american not anti Israeli. He does not want to continue giving money to a country that sells American military technology illegally while millions of Americans could actually use the tax dollars :)

Most muslims are Democrats. I think they identify more with Jews and African Americans as immigrants of different color or different accents who just stand out. They want to make sure they are treated fairly. Ron Paul will get his share of support but the vast majority will go Democrat as they have for a long time.
02:01 AM on 01/21/2012
The main reason that American Muslims have turned Democrat is because of George W. Bush, even though the majority of Muslims voted for him. They thought that things would be different under Obama. However, it turns out that Obama has the same disregard for civil liberties and the Constitution as GWB.

Yes, but most immigrants feel lonely. Often, that loneliness translates to an appreciation of the same struggle in others.

Omar Sacirbey has taken a casual approach to Ron Paul, conveniently ignoring too many of his bizarre positions while trumpeting the Texas congressman's devotion to 'free' markets. But would a 'President Paul' really be all that good for Muslims? Imagine that he could pass all the gut-wrenching legislation that he proposes: withdrawal of all US forces overseas; shutting down vast swaths of the government including the Department of Education, FEMA, NOAA, the FAA, OSHA, the EPA and more; returning power to the states to regulate themselves on social and business issues ('states rights'). In this apocalyptic world, Muslims might fare much worse than they do under President Obama, starting with unfair local laws banning mosques or the typical muslim observances in daily prayer and clothing choices (since individual states could ignore the Constitution at will, they could easily set up fundamentalist Christian theocracies which excluded other faiths). In education, the White Christian worldview would dominate because these folks are the ones who would have elected Paul and would expect payback - banning any teaching about other religions. Nobody could stop unethical business owners from dumping toxic chemicals in Muslim neighborhoods, or selling dangerous toys to Muslim kids. After a natural disaster, nobody would be around to help fix roads, bridges, homes: you'd be on your own because the states would be overwhelmed. Sexual predators would roam freely - harassing women at work with impunity. But at least we'd have 'free' markets.
03:18 PM on 01/19/2012
The states are unable to "ignore" the constitution- they were never allowed to pass laws that violate the constitution, only laws where the particular issued was not enumerated in the constitution.

Maraiis: They most certainly have ignored the Constitution when it suited them. The entire 'Jim Crow' period from 1876 through the 1960's was anti-constitutional - denying Black Americans voting rights, fair trials and equal opportunities in employment, housing and elsewhere. Blacks were lynched almost daily somewhere in the South - and the 'law' did nothing to save them. Children couldn't go to the same schools; Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus; Blacks had to get their food to go from the back door of many restaurants, unable to sit up front with Whites. These were all unconstitutional acts of bold racism supported and protected throughout the South up until my lifetime. Yet these GOP reactionaries running for president want to bring those ugly days back in one form or another. The 'states rights' movement is all about racism: it ain't so states can celebrate some holiday around fried chicken.
04:18 AM on 01/29/2012
States cannot "ignore the constitution." State laws that violate the constitution, such as anti mosque laws, would be challenged in federal courts and struck down. Dumping of toxic waste would be harder without the EPA, because the EPA acts as a protector of existing big businesses by allowing permits for dumping. Dumping would be answered with civil lawsuits using property and common law. Local gov. would still be in charge of your roads and bridges, just like now. Please stop the outright slander, you don't have a single fact or quote in your entire comment. Really, you are so outlandish that I shouldn't even engage with you, but I don't want other Hufpo readers to become infected with this.

Remember, what the politicians say BEFORE they are elected and what they DO AFTER they are elected are two different things.

When was the last time a presidential candidate kept even MOST of his promises let alone ALL?

They can't keep their campaign promises, if they do they might end up like the Kennedy brothers. We don't live in a free country anymore. Our corrupt political system is two sides of the same coin.

Well in this case the writer of the Huff Story """Muslims Say Ron Paul Is Their Kind Of Republican""""------- sometimes it is to early to prejudge and assimilate with some one who would not be there later such is the tyranny for writers they devote full time to make a point on someone and that very someone gives up so can the writer of thi story pen down what the Muslims say on anything in this Political Marathon. So God help all of US.

Even though this sounds nice it is an obvious way to smear Ron Paul since alot of American's have been conditioned since 9/11 into hating muslims. The media only puts out stories about Ron Paul which are negative or disguised to look good but really not. I hope people are able to see thru the lies and deception which is being done in order to make you vote for who the establisment wants to be elected. Obama would never have been elected if it was not for the media who created this savior like figure who was going to bring hope and change to America which people were so in desperate need of.

Can I link you to THE WEEKS of Rev Wright Coverage that occured during the 2008 campaign?

This "the media made Obama the Messiah" is nice historical revisionism, but the Republican/baggers might want to look at their choice of McCain, then added to by the boat anchor Palin?

They are making the same mistake nominating Mr. Potter from "it's a wonderful life" Mittens (I'm unemployed at 13 Million per year from Bain) Romney.

Ron Paul grew up in a rather poor family. He worked hard to get where he is, as Obama has.

I see you making this about race and class. I think that people have the ability to lift themselves up regardless of circumstance.

I will say that Ron Paul has gotten a rather unfair shake from the media, as they mostly ignore him.
