A Type 1 diabetic man has been indicted by a Boulder County grand jury on three counts of first-degree sexual assault for allegedly using insulin to drug and rape a woman.
The Daily Camera first reported that the indictment was originally dated Jan. 5 but was unsealed Tuesday.
According to the indictment, 31-year-old Frederick Allen and the victim met at the Sundown Saloon on the Pearl Street Mall late last February. Allen had met the woman before and offered to walk her home after the bar closed.
The woman's roommate told police that she heard someone come in, but said she put her earphones and music on so she wouldn't be awoken for the rest of the night. The next morning she told police that she noticed a pair of men's dress shoes and that her roommate's door was locked. The roommate said she did not check the door again until 10 p.m. that night, when she found the door unlocked and the victim's room in a state of disarray.
The indictment describes the roommate finding the victim naked, covered by a bedsheet and unresponsive. The roommate said that it appeared the victim had thrown up and her eyelids kept opening and closing.
While the victim was undergoing examinations at Boulder Community Hospital, her mother described her as being in a "catatonic" state. Doctors determined that the victim was suffering from severe hypoglycemia--also known as having blood sugar levels below 50 milligrams per deciliter--and that there were signs of a sexual assault.
Associate Director of the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center at Denver Health Dr. Eric Lavonas told 7News that having blood sugar levels that low would be dangerous to anyone and that having levels that low for hours or a day "would develop a brain injury that could last a long time."
Allen told police that though he is a diabetic, he did not remember if he brought his insulin with him that night. He admitted having sex with the woman but said he stopped when she started getting sick.
Police found a note in the victim's room that read, "I will wash your sheets for you love, see ya Saturday!!"
However Allen told police he threw them away in a dumpster instead.
Allen is being held in the Boulder County Jail and is due for a bond hearing Thursday.
