Anonymous Responds To Megaupload Takedown; Claims Credit For DOJ, RIAA, MPAA, Universal Music Outages (UPDATE)

Anonymous Megaupload

The hacktivist group Anonymous launched its "largest attack ever" Thursday, claiming credit for a coordinated takedown of websites managed by the Department of Justice and organizations supporting controversial antipiracy legislation.

The attack, dubbed “Operation Payback,” came in response to Thursday's news that the Justice Department had shut down massive file-sharing site Megaupload. The attack also temporarily brought down the websites of the Recording Industry of America, the Motion Picture Association of America and Universal Music, among others, in retaliation for their support of antipiracy legislation in Congress, known as SOPA and PIPA.

On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department said the web server hosting justice.gov “is currently experiencing a significant increase in activity, resulting in a degradation in service."

“The Department is working to ensure the website is available while we investigate the origins of this activity, which is being treated as a malicious act until we can fully identify the root cause of the disruption,” the spokeswoman said.

Anonymous also took credit Thursday night for taking offline the website of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.gov.

The takedown of Megaupload, and the arrests of its CEO and several execs, sent shockwaves through the online community Thursday. An indictment accused the company, which is one of the world's most popular file-sharing sites, of costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue.

"The fact is that the vast majority of Mega's Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch," read a statement posted on Megaupload before the site was taken offline, according to the AP.

"The raid on Megaupload Thursday proved that the feds don’t need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a blow to the Web," Anonymous said in a statement posted to its website.

"In a world where govts [sic] just keep on pushing their malicious agendas, we're no longer ready to play nice. We do not forgive!" said a post from one of Anonymous' Twitter handles.

The statement also said that Anonymous was planning another attack - this time on the White House's website, whitehouse.gov. One Anonymous operative, Barrett Brown, told the Russian news service RT on Thursday that more attacks were coming and the group plans to “damage campaign-raising abilities of remaining Democrats who support SOPA.”

The websites of the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry of America, who were both vocal supporters of antipiracy legislation, were both back online by 8 p.m. But the website of Universal Music, which also supported the legislation, was still down Thursday night, with a message: “The Site is under maintenance. Please expect it to be back shortly.” Anonymous also took credit for bringing down the website of Warner Music Group on Thursday.

The antipiracy bills, known as SOPA and PIPA, sparked widespread online protests on Wednesday because of provisions that would make it easier for authorities to go after websites with pirated content. Opponents say the proposals limit free speech, stifle innovation and undermine the architecture of the web. On Wednesday, several major websites, led by Wikipedia, blacked out or blanketed their pages with information about the legislation.

Thursday’s retaliation by Anonymous came in the form of a “denial of service” attack, a digital protest technique used often by Anonymous to bring down websites of organizations it disagrees with by overloading their servers with traffic, causing their sites to crash. The attacks on Thursday had more than 5,600 participants, according to the Russian news service RT.

But not all of them may have been aware of what they were doing. According to Gawker, Anonymous ratcheted up the force of its attack by distributing a link on Twitter and in chat rooms that tricks Internet users into loading a program that attacks websites. Once users click on the link, they download a program, known as a Low Orbit Ion Cannon, that overloads websites with traffic, causing them to crash, Gawker reported.

According to other reports, Anonymous’ attack also included the websites of the US Copyright Office and the site for BMI, or Broadcast Music, Inc., which collects license fees from businesses that use music and distributes them as royalties to songwriters.

I am surprised that "Viacom" is not on Anon's list. Viacom has been pushing google in court, to sell youtube If this ever takes place, Viacom will own IP addresses for each an every person who has expressed their likes or dislikes for America This could potentially be the guest list for a unlimited stay at your local Fema Camp.

I am very concerned for the wellfare of the American people. I firmly believe that Anonymous is not a threat to the American people. The real threat comes from those who Own and Operate every aspect of our lies They use laws that are meant to protect our rights to prosecute the American people by means of manipulation or a play on wording The master of Deception wins

. They have also shown that if they cant "beat us into submission" they will smother us by oppression

The recent signing of the NDAA trumps all constitutional rights

As the events unfold; violating laws signed, rights taken away, homes foreclosed, police states with no accountability, peaceful protestors hearded like cattle; trapped, only to be beaten with nightsticks for excercizing the first amendment, This all equates to CORRUPTION OF POWER

I am an extremely dissappointed in American Government

sharing ideas in order to create, discover and grow is great and we need more of it.

stealing someone's work without their permission and then selling it outright for a profit is not good.

Anonymous is a bully, plain and simple and no matter what issue it is. They claim they're against censorship, but taking down sites of those they disagree with is exactly that - censorship. They claim that governments don't have a right to do censor, so who gave them the right to do just that? I for one don't equate freedom with lawlessness.

as history shows - piracy always wins.

you can search the internet for lawsuites and you will find alot of people in alot of trouble.
but its dosn't matter- you can't take the piracy away, because this is what we looking for - knowledge.

in the end ? yes - you will be able to watch your favourite series via megavideo-like website
or by skype/icq/messenger etc, or even spread the mp3,movie by bluetooth on the train.

look at this pic, and see for yourself (napster vs FBI)

http://www.pricelesspicture.net/viewlargepic.php?cat=http://www.pricelesspicture.net/w&filename=132729540398&filetype=jpg

as i said before - the history shows, you cannot take it away from the people - not again.

Bravo, Anonymous! Way to go! The government is supposed to work for the populace, not the other way around, and it is about time they were reminded of that.

Does that include working for musicians who rely on sales of their music to pay their bills? Not every musician is a Metallica or a J-Lo, rolling in hundreds of millions of dollars. Shouldn't they also expect some form of protection sponsored by their government? or are they just supposed to suck it up because you don't think you should be required to pay for music?
07:52 PM on 01/26/2012
Some artists have been discovered this way and are making money due to file sharing! Money by new fans willing to go see them perform!! If it were not for piracy..The artist you speak of would not even be a spec of significance in the industry my friend..You are so wrong and do not understand the music industry.

WAKE UP AMERICAN! THE ANSWER ISN'T OBAMA OR ROMNEY THE ANSWER IS RON PAUL IF YOU VOTE FOR ANYBODY ELSE YOUR VOTING FOR THINGS LIKE THIS TO CONTINUE TO HAPPEN
07:41 PM on 01/21/2012
Ron Paul is an intelligent man, and i agree with him on certain points, most specifically our foreign policy, but that man's beliefs about the way our country should be run would bring us back to frontier America. It's a dream that local communities could take over the responsibilities of social services and do it better than the government. Taking away all foreign aid which is only about 25billion would do nothing but hurt our image with the world, and matter not to our finances. He wants to bring income tax to near zero? Really? That seems like a realistic idea to anyone? He is a radical, and unwilling to compromise, he would only do more damage and take our country backwards.
08:01 PM on 01/21/2012
I agree with you on the Ron Paul statement. He for me is one of the most paltable repbs. But for me i either really really like his ideas, or his ideas scare me to death. No middle ground. But as far as the article about anymous,Well i say frankly my dear,I dont give a *****.What is it the rich always say to us poor follks,You make your destiny.Well rich folks ,you made your destiny Now deal with it.I dont want to hear your crying.
11:41 PM on 02/11/2012
whats wrong with a frontier America ? As time as progressed we have all lost sight of what our lives are really about. Greed consumes the majority in America In America it is NOT what you know it is who you know . Norr is their a Right or WRONG its what you can prove in a court of law. Everyone knows that a court room is a stage for the Master of Deception US LAW has officially become our worst nightmare since the signing of the NDAA that trumped ALL constitutional rights of the American people

It's not really piracy if the folks who download said content would never buy it in the first place if that was the only option available. Imagine things that have absolutely no replay value, things such as many television shows. Can you honestly say with a strait face that is a good use of your money to purchase the right to view these things, and then watch them one time, and then never again? I can't think of a single movie made in the past 10 years that I'd want to watch more than once...

Anonymous isn't fighting to be malicious, they're standing up to big content providers that think they can do whatever they want.

I have a suspicion that the SOPA and the PIPA have alot to do with the sharing of Law enforcement on youtube Youtube is a great avenue that gives people the ability to upload and share information corporate news stations refuse to air. ex: The police brutality against the demonstrators of Occupy. Since Goggle has REFUSED Viacoms offer there will be another avenue If they cant buy it then they will take it by means of SOPA/ PIPA another example of oppresing the American people

when congress creates a law theres always a part in there were congress is void from that law. just look at insider trading with congress its like we are being ran by one big m@fia that protects its self and demands hush money and when the tech industry dose not lobby hard enough they sale out the Internet to censorship.

Only a small handful of them know how to do a righteous hack...

Most of them only mirror what they have seen, or been taught, and cannot evolve past 'auto-hacking'

I am not condoning what they are doing but overloading a server, or probing databases is nothing more than criminal mischief...

They could do a lot more damage if their coordinated attacks enlisted all-pros instead of drones that know just enough to pester

Let's be thankful that only a handful of them have actual talent...

Look what the pros in Israel and China have accomplished with small teams of experts

If a law is to be a law, it should be up for vote by the people. Since it will be the people, having to live with laws, or be undone by them, laws all should be voted. Otherwise this is taking V, to be your savior and brain. Musicians and actors don't like their industry or what it's become, they have enough to change it, besides their the ones with the backing. If someone is making money of something allowed for free, off someone elses work, that is also a piracy. Feels like I'm always around, kindergardeners but not. What the world musters.

It is up for vote by the people. Congress is your / our people. We put'm there!

They don't, even have a complete and acurate program, the government would really want. What they have, is something that could go viral, one that might take part down, another that providers will have to do each web separately and the other, where they would have to write a court order every step of the way??????????
03:59 PM on 01/21/2012
they are counting chicken that haven't even hatched 500 million come on,not everyone who downloads a copy of thier over priced garbage would actually buy it,myself i prefer to screen it prior to buying a blueray this way i'm not gambling with my limited entertainment dollars.Rip ms. It's really hard to tell who the criminals are. Anonymous seems to be against musicians collecting royalties for their hard work. They seem to be saying that it's OK to get music and films for free. That makes them criminals who erode the fundaments of being a successful artist. The government is against piracy but is thinking about limiting the internet in order to accomplish that goal.

They both seem to be on the wrong track. At first I thought anonymous was cool. Now I think that they are nothing more than anarchists. Hijacking other people to do their work is pretty low. AND it gives the government legitimate reasons to attack internet freedoms even further.

There's never legitimate reason to attack freedoms... are you kidding? Anonymous may inadvertently come down on the side of some less than good characters, but they are protecting the ideals of free speech and all civil liberties.

If by 'inadvertently' you mean tricking internet users into using their computers as 'bots', then I guess we disagree. Whose rights are being eroded at that point? I am against SOPA, but I am also against what 'anonymous' does on occasion.

The last sentence needs to be taken in context. I don't think they should attack internet freedoms, but the activities of 'anonymous' gives them a reason to do so that did not exist before. And to say that 'anonymous' is protecting the 'ideals of free speech and civil liberties' is untenably idealistic. They don't always do that and aren't really very organized.
09:26 PM on 01/21/2012
Hear, hear! Free speech means you have to give a platform even to things you abhor. Otherwise, they could get the upper hand and silence your speech.
03:41 AM on 01/23/2012
Think of it this way. Anon, is basically saying, NOOOO! You will not have this too! See when the American gov cannot benefit from something, they make it illegal! Simple as that. If anyone does not see that, look at history very closely :)
