Bruce Springsteen: 'We Take Care Of Our Own' Off 'Wrecking Ball,' New Single, New Album Revealed

Bruce Springsteen is back, and this time the Boss is coming out strong for the working class.

The blue-collar rock legend and his E Street Band have released "We Take Care Of Our Own," the first single off their new album, "Wrecking Ball." Due out in the UK on March 5th and the US on March 6th, the album is a politically charged work that appears to draw inspiration from the grassroots Occupy movement.

"Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life," manager John Landau said. "The lyrics tell a story you can't hear anywhere else and the music is his most innovative in recent years. The writing is some of the best of his career and both veteran fans and those who are new to Bruce will find much to love on 'Wrecking Ball.'"

The lyrics of "We Take Care Of Our Own" evoke recent tragedies but also sound a note of hope, suggesting that the nation can reclaim its spirit of shared sacrifice.

Springsteen sings:

"I been stumbling on good hearts turn to stone, the road of good intentions gone dry as a bone... From Chicago to New Orleans, from the muscle to the bone, From the shotgun shack to the Super Dome, There ain't no help the cavalry stayed at home, there ain't no one hearing the bugle blown. We take care of our own, Wherever this flag's flown, We take care of our own... Where are the eyes, the eyes with the will to see? Where are the hearts that run over with mercy? Where's the love that has not forsaken me? Where's the work that set my hands, my soul free? Where's the spirits that will reign reign over me? Where's the promise from sea to shining sea? Wherever this flag is flown, we take care of our own."

Have to give Springsteen credit: at least he's stepping up, and coming out in support. Most bands seem scared to death of the issues raised by OWS.

New protest tracks are emerging slowly, but they're coming. This one, a fiery cover of “NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME”, is a fist-shaking garage rendition of a classic 60s protest anthem: http://tinyurl.com/7p93vvm

While it's not "We Take Care Of Our Own", the lyrics are as relevent today as they were 40 years ago:

“There’s a new sun rising up angry in the sky.
There’s a new voice crying but not afraid to die.
Let the old world make believe it’s blind and deaf and dumb
BUT NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME.

There are changes lying ahead on every road.
There are new thoughts ready and waiting to explode.
When tomorrow is today, the bells will toll for some.
BUT NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME.

The future’s coming on sweet and strong,
And no-one’s gonna hold it back for long…

There are new dreams crowding out old realities.
There’s revolution sweeping in like a fresh new breeze.
Let the old world make believe it’s blind and deaf and dumb,
BUT NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME. “

(BTW, the whole album is pretty decent, if you are into that vintage 60s garage rock thing. It's a free download http://tinyurl.com/7od26by)

I agree with the Huff review for the most part, but I think they're missing it in a couple key spots. Bruce didn't get inspiration from the Occupy movement---he had finished recording before the first Wall St occupation. But Bruce is obviously pissed, and for good reason; he's been a champion for the working class forever it seems, and since he's been around there's never been a 'needier' time for a champion. The other area where I disagree with the review is where they claim that the song sounds a note of hope, suggesting that the nation can reclaim its spirit of shared sacrifice. On the contrary, I think it ends on a pessimistic note that "we take care of our own" meaning families take care of themselves, communities take care of their own, cities take care of their own, states, and the good ole USA takes care of its own "from sea to shining sea"---repeated twice for emphasis. But that's the irony that Bruce is emphasizing---we are so divided that there are very few of our own to take care of. Bruce has captured the angst that millions feel, and composed about it. It's nice to know that after all these years his well-deserved success hasn't caused him to forget his roots. I can't wait to see him in concert, the only concert I'll pay that kind of money to see.

Bruce ven a España, aqui si te entendemos, aqui, seguimos "working on a dream".

Yeah Bruce, we all wish it was so.
Look forward to seeing your song ripped off by another right wing politician, just like they did with Born in the USA.
They only hear the chorus.
We don't take care of our own. Not hardly.

God Springsteen sucks! The most overrated artist of the last 40 years. One word to describe him:
BORING!

Bruce, Goldman Sachs and Chase and Haliburton take care of their own.

And they own this country.

And if you don't like it, indefinite detention awaits.

Pointing out the foolishness of republican voters.

How many weeks until a republican pendent attacks Bruce Springsteen for the album? Fortunately they tend not to read lyrics as evidenced in when they tried to use " Born in The USA" without actually listening to the words.

I have been a fan since the late 70's and sorry to say, this is a dud. Yes, Bruce has a knack for writing a catchy, radio friendly, melodic hook but the images are clumsy. Which "Cavalry" is he referring to? Custer's 7th that massacred Big Foot and his band at Wounded Knee? And which "flag" is he waving? The corporate Sony Records flag or the flag of the common people? It seems too purposefully ambiguous and contrived. He should do some more wood shedding on Seeger and Guthrie. Let's call this "Radio Nowhere" lite.

Good stuff. Can't wait for the rest of the album. If this "Wrecking Ball" is the same song he sang during the last concerts at the Meadowlands, it's a good one, too.

Really looking forward to the tour, not sure what to expect, though, without Clarence.

One of my favourite artists, Canadian singer/songwriter Hawksley Workman, once opined that overtly political messages in music added a "shelf-life" to the song. I tend to agree with that. Although I must confess that NIN's "Capital G" still makes me laugh.

He should invite big fan Chris Christie for a special private concert and sing just these political songs. Guy needs to be schooled.

What are the odds that a republican running will try to co opt 'Born in the USA' as their theme song until Springsteen stops him? I 'd say 50/ 50.

That already happened at the RNC in 2004...

And in 1984 until someone pointed out to Reagan (or his people) that "Born in the USA" wasn't exactly "God Bless America."

Eric6014,

Count on them not to remember Bruce says 'No.'
09:17 PM on 01/20/2012
Bruce will not be nearly as polite as he was to Reagan in 1984 -- my bet is he'll respond with something like "Gimme Some Truth."

JayJayInMI,

Good one. the repubs just love 'Born in the USA". it is so hard to go Toby Keith when "The Boss'' gave us a much more rousing American song. The repubs don't understand that his vision of America is far and away from their's.
