Marianne Gingrich, Newt Gingrich's Ex-Wife, Says He Wanted An 'Open Marriage' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/19/2012 10:19 am Updated: 01/19/2012 2:35 pm

So, it seems that one part of that juicy ABC News "bombshell" interview with Marianne Gingrich concerns one of the "big ideas" that Newt Gingrich, hive of constant innovation, had during the period of time the former House Speaker was out of office: he wanted Marianne, his second wife, to enter into an "open marriage" arrangement, so that he could continue to consort with Callista Bisek. (You know, the third wife that introduced him to Catholicism.)

ABC's Brian Ross interviewed Gingrich about the matter:

GINGRICH: I said to him, we've been married a long time. And he said, yes, but you want me all to yourself. Callista doesn't care what I do.

ROSS: What was he saying to you, do you think?

GINGRICH: He was asking to have an open marriage, and I refused.

ROSS: He wanted an open marriage.

GINGRICH: Yeah, that I accept the fact that he has somebody else in his life.

ROSS: And you said?

GINGRICH: No. No. That is not a marriage.

Of course, to a certain extent, this is something we've already basically known. Let's recall that in the August 2010 Esquire profile of Gingrich, Marianne offered this account of their marriage's last days:

Early in May, she went out to Ohio for her mother's birthday. A day and a half went by and Newt didn't return her calls, which was strange. They always talked every day, often ten times a day, so she was frantic by the time he called to say he needed to talk to her.

"About what?"

He wanted to talk in person, he said.

"I said, 'No, we need to talk now.'"

He went quiet.

"There's somebody else, isn't there?"

She kind of guessed it, of course. Women usually do. But did she know the woman was in her apartment, eating off her plates, sleeping in her bed?

She called a minister they both trusted. He came over to the house the next day and worked with them the whole weekend, but Gingrich just kept saying she was a Jaguar and all he wanted was a Chevrolet. "'I can't handle a Jaguar right now.' He said that many times. 'All I want is a Chevrolet.'"

He asked her to just tolerate the affair, an offer she refused.

So, the new wrinkle here is that Marianne Gingrich is characterizing this as a desire on Newt's part to have an open marriage, rather than just have his wife tolerate his affair on the side. In many ways, this is a distinction without a difference, though I suppose it now makes a lot of his new demonstrations of Catholic conversion to be ... well, I suppose the phrase we're using these days is, "pious bologna."

Newt Gingrich has yet to weigh in on these new allegations from his ex-wife. In the past, he's written off his infidelities as events that occurred while he was too busy loving America.

UPDATE: There's been a mad dash to break these Marianne Gingrich scooplets, and the Washington Post has their own interview with Marianne Gingrich on the matter of this "open marriage." (This is the "exclusive print interview" with Marianne Gingrich, by the way.)

The fun part is that we learn that the day after Newt Gingrich asked Marianne for a divorce, he gave a lecture to the Republican Women Leaders Forum titled, "The Demise of American Culture" in which he decried the way liberals "talk about values," suggesting that they would not prefer that "young people" to "learn that George Washington was...A man of standards, a man who earned the right to be father of this country?"

As Marianne Gingrich told the Post:

“How could he ask me for a divorce on Monday and within 48 hours give a speech on family values and talk about how people treat people?” she said.

I mean...has she met Newt Gingrich?

Speaking the day before the Delaware primary, Gingrich hinted he was considering ending his presidential run:

"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich said in an interview with NBC News during a campaign stop in Delaware. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are."

According to NBC, the former House speaker said he would need to "reassess" based on the results of Tuesday's primary in Delaware, a state where Gingrich has spent a great deal of time campaigning in recent weeks. Gingrich indicated that the state's 17 delegates were crucial to his viability as a candidate.

What a hypocrite Gingrich is. He led the Republicans in impeaching Clinton, and all their moralizing was so vehement, including that of Newt, about how Clinton was morally corrupt and had to be removed and they painted a picture of how the Capital would fall into the earth if they did not. We know Newt was having an affair at the very same time with Callista, and how many others were doing the very same  Read More...

The likes of Gingrich make Bill Clinton look like a saint.

I don't think so. You see, The depravity of Clintons act in the White House, no less, Is by far the worst thing anyone can do as president. But you, do not think it is because you are so immune to all of this, and Clinton is soooo untouchable, BS

Gingrich was having an affair with Callista at the time he was speaker and she was a staffer in the House of Representatives. You don't know know what acts he was indulging in while doing Callista in the Capitol because it never turned into a scandal.

I have a problem with a married Speaker of the House having an affair with a 27 year old government employee and condeming Clinton for lying about his one night stand. Shows lack of character and poor judgment Mitt's wife has had breast cancer as has Newt's first wife, and MS as has Newt's second wife. That tells me a lot about his judgment and character. His sins are between him and God, but his judgment and character are for the voters to think about.

Not to take up for Newt as I am on Team Obama but didn't Marianne have an affair with him while he was married to the first Mrs. Gingrich? She has no credibility to me when it comes to character.

Yeah. That's like the pot calling the kettle black. It was okay when he cheats on his first wife (the one with cancer) with her but when he cheats on her, it's wrong. Come off of it lady. He (or she) who is without sin, cast the first stone.

"Ron never voted for raising taxes.
Ron never voted for the Patriot Act
Ron never voted to raise the debt ceiling
Ron never voted to use your tax dollars to bail out the banks
Ron has introduced term limit legislation but has been denied by the rest of Congress
Ron does not participate in the congressional pension plan.
Ron returns a portion of his congressional office budget to the Treasury every year
Ron never voted for an unbalanced budget
Ron never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership
Ron voted against NAFTA and CAFTA
Ron and he voted against the NDAA
Ron has always wanted to reduce our massive spending by stopping these useless wars.
Ron will help audit then gradually abolish the Federal Reserve so we can return to a sound currency
Ron will enforce immigration law and close the border with Mexico
Ron is against the income tax
Ron will get rid of the IRS
Ron has never taken a government-paid junket
Ron will reduce regulation so companies come back to the United States and create more jobs

Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate who has served in the armed forces and is the only one who wants to stop the wars. Romney and the others have never served and are happy to send your sons and daughters to useless wars. This is why the media has ignored Ron Paul."

Hahaha.. okay then, let's make Ron the nominee. I really don't care which one you put through, Obama won't have to bat an eye to beat them.

Newt Gingrich is a throughly corrupt politician who was run out of office by his own party and fined $300,000 for ethics violations. He's sold himself to corporate powers that he rails against for votes. He is a serial philanderer with absolutely no moral values. His own party says he lacks leadership ability, is unstable, and lacks control over his temper. He's an egotistical pseudo intellectual who had to leave a 5th rate community college in rural GA because he could not make tenure. Who in their right mind would think this man fit to be president of the United States.

that is the question, isn't it - who in their RIGHT mind would think this man was fit.....But then we had 2 generations of Bushs....so why would anything surprise you?
01:51 PM on 01/22/2012
Answer: Because he is a sociopathic lying career politician that decieves, takes credit for others successes and uses people to get what he wants (freddie mac). It makes me I'll how he press applauds him for brow beating the moderator for asking the question. I don't think a politicians personal life should necessarily factor in, but the fact is that it does and always has....fair game Newt!

menage a trios....Callista did not care then and she doesn't care now.

I think the media finally went one step too far. The Gingrich win I think shows American's fed up with the media and that story being aired before the SC primary. The media has ran stories and dug up people on every candidate and the people is SC finally said enough and voted for him instead of against. When women vote for a candidate who has an x-wife damning him, well that says alot.

What girlfriend will Newt have in the White House once Callista ages a little?

I don't know what all the drama is about...for crying out loud...Pres. Clinton recieved a @@ in the White House Oval Office...and Hillary never divorced him over that and other past affairs...Hillary and Bill were OK an open marriage....so, why pick on Newt...? Oh, that's right..I forgot, the liberal media and left wing kooks are OK when Democrats cross the line...the old "double standard"...at least Pres. Obama is staying faithful...I will give him that...he's probably going to be among the top 5 worst Presidents in history..but, at least he has been faithful to Michele....and gave the green light to kill "Bin Laden"...the best thing he has done since taking office...

"Hillary and Bill were OK an open marriage....so, why pick on Newt...? "

Well this ain't Hillary and Bill's marriage, and apparentlyNewt's ex wife Marriane wasn't ok with an open marriage when he asked her for one. She's the one who is on TV talking about it and she is not a liberal or a democrat so why are you blaming the democrats and liberals for what she is saying? She's the one picking on her hubby by airing their dirty laundry.

Open marriage is ok for liberal but not for conservatives, get it.

So if he becomes the father of our country what does that make us? Just asking?
