Bird Flu Research Halted Over Fears of Influenza H5N1 Bio-Terrorism

Bird Flu

LAURAN NEERGAARD   01/20/12 03:01 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Scientists who created easier-to-spread versions of the deadly bird flu said Friday they're temporarily halting more research, as international specialists debate what should happen next.

Researchers from leading flu laboratories around the world signed onto the voluntary moratorium, published Friday in the journals Science and Nature.

What the scientists called a "pause" comes amid fierce controversy over how to handle research that's high-risk but potentially could bring a big payoff. Two labs – at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and the University of Wisconsin-Madison – created the new viruses while studying how bird flu might mutate to become a bigger threat to people.

The U.S. government funded the work but last month urged the teams not to publicly reveal the exact formula so that would-be bioterrorists couldn't copy it. Critics also worried a lab accident might allow the strains to escape. The researchers reluctantly agreed not to publish all the details as long as the government set up a system to provide them to legitimate scientists who really need to know. The National Institutes of Health is creating such a system.

"We recognize that we and the rest of the scientific community need to clearly explain the benefits of this important research and the measures taken to minimize its possible risks," lead researchers Ron Fouchier of Erasmus and Yoshihiro Kawaoka of Wisconsin wrote Friday in the letter. They were joined by nearly three dozen other flu researchers.

They called for a public international meeting to debate how to learn from the work, safely. And they agreed to hold off on additional research with the existing lab-bred strains or that leads to any new ones for 60 days.

A U.S. official praised the development.

The moratorium "is a really good idea, because a lot of very important issues are at hand," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who expects most flu researchers doing such work to sign on. "There aren't a lot of people who are doing that, I can assure you."

The U.S. also wants international input; researchers are talking with the World Health Organization.

Today, the so-called H5N1 bird flu only occasionally infects people, mostly those who have close contact with sick poultry. But when it does, it's highly lethal. The lab-bred H5N1 strains were a surprise because they showed it was easier than previously thought for the virus to mutate in a way that lets it spread easily between at least some mammals – in this case, ferrets.

An educated bio-terrorist would never create an easily spread bird-flu,
however to create one you need a certain level of education
which might also dissuade terrorist beliefs.

This is an interesting paradox.

So its ok to mutate a virus into a killer organism because
its an effective bio-weapon and we all know that labs that
do this are so secure that none of this lethal virus will ever
find a way into our neighborhoods. If the news hadn't come
out last week, the research would still be ongoing.

In April I got the H1N1 flu vaccine which also protects against several types of flu for $25.00
Was best investment I ever made. I've been surrounded by sniffling sneezing feverish bed ridden coughing sore throat miserable people for months and so far I haven't gotten even a hiccup.

Anyone can get this protection from your local county health department. While I was there I also got the 100 day cough TDaP booster vaccine and the pneumonia vaccine. These modern vaccines protect you against many strains of these bugs. The P in TDaP stands for Pertussis
of which there are milder or more serious strains. Over 10% of the people in Canada have Pertussis in a pandemic. Why wheez and cough for 3 months when you can almost never get it for $25.00 ? The TDaP booster vaccine is good for 10 years....Alfred-

Look into who makes these vaccines and what is actually
in the vaccine before making the decision to get one. Being
informed is always the best way to make an important decision.
It's likely getting pneumonia after the flu would be more deadly.

One of the people I work with just went to the ER with the flu having breathing issues. They gave her a bronchial inhaler ($41.00), ER visit, ($487.00)...total $528.00 The flu vaccine itself ($25.00) is only about a few CCs of liquid. And here is an even more import thing to think about.
When small pox vaccines were required for everybody, eventually Small Pox disappeared. There are only traces of it in Euro labs. If everybody got flu shots, maybe
is would go away too. Something to think about....Al-

I think that this is bigest threat to humnaity a self replicating virus that spread the globe within 24 hours. Millions would be infected before we were even aware of it.

trailerguy, What scares many is the actions of the governments. The Elected Ones will be taken underground and get the vaccine way before those of us who have a slim chance of surviving. In the movie it started in China, when a pig on a pig farm was bitten by a bat, And was served to about 4 people and 1 of the 4 is an American woman from Minneapolis. After my years in the military, too real for me.

And the scary reality is that such research IS being done--and not only for the betterment of medicine..but sadly as a substitute to the cold-war (i.e. the race to ensure one upmanship over another) where now instead of developing nuclear weapons (well, there's still some of that done, for sure, not that it would be PC to speak of); there are biological and biochemical weapons.
The rational to study them and keep vaults of ebola and other level 4 hazards is to have 'one up' on the competition who may also have those; and to work on developing vaccines and antidotes for those very hazards in case another country goes kookoo and spreads one first. But there is also the reality that there is fascination with the ability to potentially wipe out an enemy, and with the possible innoculation of one's population to inflict maximum damage on another population. It is not something most civilized countries like talking about; but the realty is that the US (and some other countries which some of you can probably guess at), have active research in bio-weapons, weaponizing systems, and so on. Along with 'libraries' of live samples of weaponized stuff besides. Scary stuff. that.

Our government is founded by Big Pharma. They do this research so one day they can release these viruses and force everybody to obligatory vaccination so they can make even more money.
They are worst then mafia. If you want to know what is in these vaccines, watch Jessie Ventura "Conspiracy Theory".

Better than watching "Conspiracy Theory" go to an AMA site
or even WHO to see more about what is in vaccines and who
makes them. Profits are the reason Pharma makes these, and
why more people seem to get sick when sales go down.

Sadly, there is a market for these. From the reality of 'preparedness' to the possible eventuality of the virus mutating (which is a possibility, given that these things do mutate all the time), and if we know more about how it does so and in what direction, maybe one can pre--prepate vaccines and/or medications to fight in if a pandemic erupts. The other reality is economical--any phramacological company that can come up with the vaccine/medication for the possible mutation of a virus will have (even without ugly possible motives to kind of wish that the pandemic erupts so that they can sell their product) the market to themselves to produce and distribute their remedy for orbitant prices and profit.
As for what the government is funding it...it is most likely under the 'defense' budget umbrella (openly or not), as there is active research into bioweapons and their distribution and control... Not a very sane thing to do, but there are those who justify it as being the 'more sane' option of the two if the other is to let the enemy possibly develop bioweapons that are 'bigger and badder' than your own; and/or be without a remedy in case the enemy does that. And it doesn't hurt to have something to wave over the enemy's head, either. The politics of power. Ugly stuff, that.

what an absurd statement.

they haven't been routinely bvtchered by US, so-called "human beings," over it,  since the age of the dinosaurs.

and if it truly didn't affect them, perhaps not so many of them would dropdead from it.

Because we are afraid people are going to use the bird flu against other people.

In order to create a vaccine against something, you first have to be able to breed it in your lab. This is just a temporary moratorium to make sure all the protocols are being carried out properly. then they will go back to working on vaccines.
