Birds Of America

NEW YORK — A rare first edition of John James Audubon's illustrated "The Birds of America" depicting more than 400 life-size North American species in four monumental volumes was purchased at auction Friday for $7.9 million.

Christie's auction house identified the buyer as an American collector who bid by phone.

The winning bid was within the presale estimate of $7 million to $10 million for the work, considered a masterpiece of ornithology art.

Another complete first edition of "The Birds of America" sold at Sotheby's in London in December 2010 for $11.5 million, a record for the most expensive printed book sold at auction.

The 3 1/2-foot-tall books feature hand-colored prints of all the species known to Audubon in early 19th-century North America. Audubon insisted on the book's large format – printed on the largest handmade sheets available at the time – because of his desire to portray the birds in their actual size and natural habitat.

He found creative ways to paint them to fit the page, including showing large species feeding with their necks bent.

The set at Christie's was offered for sale by the heirs of the 4th Duke of Portland. It was accompanied by a complete first edition five-volume set of Audubon's "Ornithological Biography."

Experts estimate that 200 complete first-edition copies were produced over an 11-year period, from 1827 to 1838. Today, 120 are known to exist, with 107 in institutions and 13 in private hands. The book, part scientific and part art, includes 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species, made from engraved copper plates based on Audubon's original watercolors.

Audubon sold the engraved plates in a subscription series in England, Europe and North America.

7.9 million for a book? If I had 7.9 million, I'd donate it to help homeless animals.

I agree with your sentiment, but I would financially help out humans before animals. I do applaud your generosity.

Books of this sort are purchased as an INVESTMENT, folks. While you stick your money in bank accounts and CD's that pay you far less than the rate of inflation, the knowledgeable investor buys art and books (among other things) that can not go down in value, because there are only a limited number of these originals and there's no such thing as a time machine to go back and get more. The shrewd person with at least enough money to invest will double or triple their investment and risk nothing.

Romney has one in his private collection. He wants to add the American public to it.

If you are a representative of the American public, and the parable is about birds, I'd guess you'd be a bittern or a cormorant.

If I could spare 7.9 million I would have divided it up between St Anthonys Dining Room in St Francisco, The Detroit Food Pantry, Catholic Relief Services, Save The Children and the Christian Childrens Fund. And if I had ANOTHER 7.9 million, with 25,000 children a DAY dying from starvation .....a lot of good could be done. Oh Well.....the books are nice too. If the person who bought them is reading this, wont you send a couple of hundred bucks to The Christian Childrens Fund ?

they bid anonymously, by phone, ever think they do and just don't want having their names posted for doing so, seeing every Tom, Dick and Harry will come out of the woodwork, putting their hand outs..

How many people realize that Audubon killed the birds and then posed them so he could paint them? Sort of a buzz kill, isn't it?

I'm not a rich man and I don't have a vast collection of art,,but on reflection of the matter I would like to hope that if I had that much money I would not pay that much for a book just so I could say I owned such a piece of art,,I would lke to think I would try to help my fellow man in some way or another if I could,,now don't get me wrong here,,It is his money and if this is what makes him happy then it is his right to do as he pleases,,I'm just saying It doesn't appeal to me to have the most expensive book or the most valuable painting,,my best feelings come when I know I've helped someone in a positive way

Many people doesn't comprehend why millinairs/billionairs make purchases like this, the answer is simple: Investment. The golden rule in any business is that prices is ultimately determined by the market and rare pieces such as this will only appreciate in price. It's the same way with practically any art in the world-from sculture to handmade knives.

I think you protest too much. Does it have anything to do with your name Steel "Artist"? It might be an investment to the buyer, but how long before he gets his money back IF that was the buyer's intent.
06:26 AM on 01/21/2012
I don't see where he protested anything.

IF YOU CAN SPEND 10 MILLION ON A BOOK IM SURE HE IS NO HURRY AS IT WILL AT LEAST MAINTAIN ITS ORIGINAL PRICE.

With that said, the only person who will be a customer in the future is another person with money to burn, so how much is enough.
To all the people who say this is a completely safe investment and can't go down, I give you the housing market and the Titanic.

7.9 million for a book?? some people are stupid!!!
10:52 PM on 01/20/2012
This is not just "a" book, it is an investment which is the very reason that people buys items such as this to begin with. The price will only appreciate in price making it to where the buyer will profit. Perhaps someday you will comprehend vaule and investment when you see it.
