Newt Gingrich Cancels Event Due To Poor Attendance

01/20/12 09:40 AM ET   AP

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Newt Gingrich has cancelled a campaign appearance in South Carolina because of poor attendance.

The Republican presidential candidate was scheduled to speak to the Southern Republican Leadership on Friday. But a campaign spokesman told reporters that he would no longer be appearing due to poor attendance.

There were just a few dozen people in the audience at the College of Charleston's arena, where the event was taking place. The conference has suffered from low attendance all week but Gingrich rival Rick Santorum went ahead and addressed the group on Thursday.

Gingrich's spokesman said skipping the stop would give the former House speaker more time at his next scheduled event, a tour of a children's hospital.

He heard that only a handful of attendees had worn their white hooded robes and decided to move on to the next event.

From the TV that I watched, none of the candidates had good attendance at their respective events. Everyone was at the Colbert/Cain event.

One can only hope that Stephen Colbert is the catalyst that brings the Political world to it's senses and political PACS are eliminated in such a way that the Supreme Court decision for Citizens vs United is nullified now and forever... Who better Than Colbert for in your face satire?

Reminds me of all those amazing speeches Newt gave to an empty room.

An empty suit speaking to an empty room. Something poetic about that!

Why would he tour a kid's hospital, he's wants to pull a few of them out to clean the hospital to help pay for their care?

I had similar thoughts. Maybe he was trolling for some hard-up custodial workers.
11:18 AM on 01/21/2012
Or, perhaps he was morphing into his "General Patton" persona and was intending to yell at some kids for pretending to be sick. THAT certainly would raise his profile even further with the White Knights of the Ku Klux GOP!

If this guy will blow off his supporters, what will he do to the country if elected. If this guy will tell lies to his wifes and cheat on one or 2 of them after pledging to GOD he would be faithful to them, what will he do to this country. If this guy can be so disrespectful at the last debate to the host for asking a question about his life issues, how can we know that if elected to the White House, that he will not just tell the country to "GO F--- YOURSELF, I'M PRESIDENT and do just what he wants. Who ever is elected by the people is there to serve and work for us. One of the best ways to know how a person will do in is to know what and how that person acted in the past. Past actions will predict future actions.

I gotta think that if Newt doesn't win, he's out for good. If this surge, and Mitt's gaffes, aren't enough to get him a win in a southern state, he really doesn't have much chance with the rest of the nation.

Wow, who convinced these Republican Candidates to run. I see not a single detailed plan on what needs to be done, except criticizing Pres. Obama on his failures. Never mentioning they have been the Obstructionists for every program that would speed the recovery from the absolute horror he inherited from them.

Sheaftosser said to get past the racism and lies, which makes up the majority of what they present. If you take those away from Newt, you can see that he's incredibly self focused and boring. About as deep as a mirror.

Not unlike the entire field of candidates.

Charisma ain't all they lack. Try adding compassion, humility, intelligence, character, patriotism, virtue, courage, etc., etc.

Contrary to the impression one would get from the massive media coverage of these political beauty contests, there are very few people who really care who will be the GOP candidate. For that reason, there are very few people in attendance for any of the events in South Carolina.

For a politician, "...sorry, I have to visit the Children's Hospital"
is a kid's "...the dog ate my homework"
or a ship Captain's "...I tripped and fell into the lifeboat."

Supremely Insulting because you didn't even Try to make up a decent lie....

Santorum may be no more than a Google meme, but at least he buried his ego and showed voters some respect and stayed....

Pitiful.

Gotta agree about Santorum. And as much as I disagree with 99% of what he stands for, I can't help but admire his sincerity. He comes across as personally likeable.
