Rick Santorum Law License Suspended

First Posted: 01/20/12 05:17 PM ET Updated: 01/20/12 07:50 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- On Thursday night, Rick Santorum told a debate audience that he does his own taxes. He's not as diligent when it comes to bar dues: The former senator's license to practice law is under "administrative suspension," according to the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Such a suspension would typically come about not for serious malfeasance but for failing to pay an annual $70 fee required to stay current.

"There's no indication that Santorum has violated any rules of conduct," Tim McNair, a Pennsylvania attorney and HuffPost Hill reader who spotted the suspension and flagged it to us. But, he said, it does speak to basic organizational abilities.

"If you want to be responsible, you have to take care of business, and for whatever reason, Rick hasn't done it," said McNair, a Democrat who has volunteered for three Santorum opponents in Pennsylvania.

Santorum's suspension was for non-payment of a fee that would have allowed him to stay inactive, his campaign told HuffPost. He's been inactive since 1994 and was finally suspended on April 2, 2010, board records show. The fee itself was nominal.

Senior Political Adviser J. Hogan Gidley says Santorum is aware of his suspension. "Rick says he was never disciplined," Gidley confirmed. "He just didn't renew it."

Before politics, Santorum had worked for the respected Pittsburgh law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart in the '80s. His career highlight -- or at least the one drawing the most attention -- may have been representing the World Wrestling Federation. He lobbied state legislators in Harrisburg on the league's behalf, arguing that the oiled-up musclemen should be excused from federal steroid regulations. He may have disappointed young fans everywhere by pointing out that wrestling was more like theater than real sport.

Of that case, Santorum boasted to the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2010: "I was at the center of that. Pennsylvania was the most pernicious of states when it came to regulation. They made you pay all this money to the boxing [athletic] commission. They used to just rape these guys. You'd have to pay a certain percentage of the gate receipts to have these officials just stand around and watch the match. It was ridiculous."

Santorum -- who spends much of his time in Virginia and has property there -- still lists a Pennsylvania address with the disciplinary board. If the presidential campaign doesn't work out and he wants to jump back into a legal career in Pennsylvania, he'll have to hit the books.

According to the disciplinary board, in order to get readmitted, Santorum would have to take "a minimum of thirty-six (36) hours of accredited PA CLE courses with a minimum twelve (12) of those hours in the area of Ethics."

When commenters call out the President for something that not only isn't true but had its moment in email heaven 10 years ago, its frustrating and speaks ill of these commenters state of mind. I mean the canard, "both President and Michelle Obama's law licenses have been suspended," which is always framed in a snarky, playground accusation like, "your guy's no better than my guy." Sorry, but my guy is better. Michelle Obama requested inactive status for her law license (she's doing a job that doesn't require one) and President Obama voluntarily retired his law license (not going to need one again). No suspension, no black mark, no problem. Santorum? Not so much.

Where are his tax returns? He was quick to call out Romney for his procrastination but fails to turn in his own. Every minute that passes by will cause this candidate undo harm. This might be a lose lose situation for this values conservative. Look for Newt to surge.

Santorum dropped out of the race, he is no longer a candidate.

What happened to Obama's law license in Illinois? Or Michelle Obama's license? Clearly, Santorum does not intend to go back to practicing law in Pennsylvania. He would likely have to get some refresher by now anyway since he's been inactive for more than 15 years. That is usually the way it is in any profession in regards to keeping an active license.

The Obama's both had their licenses put into 'inactive' status, which means they still have valid law license, but they just aren't engaged in any professional activity that requires them at this time.

The office of the Presidency requires an ability to attend to details. Apparently former Senator Santorum is somewhat hit and miss in this area.

This much is certain: Rick Santorm will not be elected President. So keeping his state bar dues paid up just might be a good idea.

so you DO realize that both Barack and Michelle Obama's law licenses are suspended as well, don't you???
02:44 PM on 02/19/2012
No they are not. But you can collect your nickel today. If you don't know the difference between "inactive" and "suspended" buy a dictionary. With pictures.

Your law licese is suspended and you want to be the President of the United States? If you can't handle everything everything you need to do to keep your license, then how can you handle a crisis facing this country. I mean really...

Yes, let's hear some more about how hard it was to go to school and earn a j.d. as the son of a coal miner. Then ask why one would would let their license to practice expire?
04:42 PM on 03/16/2012
But...doesn't that make him an effete snob, going on to school like that?

Rick Santorum is such a vile individual. And while I'm no fan of Newt Gingrich either, it was amazing to hear Santorum go on about how erratic Gingrich is or how Santorum would be more electable. Santorum couldn't even hold onto his own U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Voters voted him out of office by double digits. And he has a history of 'erratic' and bizarre statements about gays that would hurt him in a general election.

In the Army, "attention to detail" can be a life or death issue. This little detail of a $70 fee does not speak well for someone who wishes to be commander-in-chief.

And POLs make all sorts of comments about the state of work ethics in this country - to or own President calling the bulk of us "lazy." If I don't pay a bill, the ONLY resaon is that I don't have the money, and I communicate that to the receiving party and IN MOST CASES, they are willing to work with me. This man wants to be President - if we allow that, if we do not demand better of our representation, then we deserve the lack of representation we now enjoy. We ALL have decisions to make. Choose wisely - it's just the future at stake.

This guy's entire career was about carrying bags of money to politicians-period! And he's not "disorganized"-it's just that he NEVER pays for anything himself-whatever group assumed responsibility for paying him off just forgot to pay his license fee. They'll do it soon.
