Arianna Addresses U.S. Mayors: Country's Solutions To 'Come At Local Level'

Posted: 01/22/2012 12:07 am Updated: 01/23/2012 8:22 am

Arianna and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi addressed the U.S. Conference of Mayors on Jan 18, challenging the nation's local leaders to become a voice for the people they represent.

In her speech, Arianna called on American mayors to become active members of their communities and address the growing gaps between the nation's rich and poor. She hit at the heart of what many consider to be an astounding trend in the US: the increasing downward-mobility of the American middle-class.

With an emphasis on Aol's Patch network of hyper-local sites, Arianna also told the conference of the growing need to address and cover the nation's often neglected poorest citizens.

In her blog post prior to the conference, Arianna explained why she feels the recovery of America's economy begins at the local level.

That's why I believe the solutions the country is so desperately looking for are going to come at the local level -- from our mayors and engaged citizens working with their communities. It's our cities, not the nation's capital, that are the real idea factory of our country. It's the Mayor's Mansion not the White House from which bold decision-making is likely to originate. It's from any house on your street not the House of Representatives where projects that will make your community a better place to live in are more likely to surface.

"Arianna Addresses U.S. Mayors: Country's Solutions To 'Come At Local Level"

So why the constant push from Democrats to eliminate all local and statewide control?

Please, Mrs Huffington - confront the real issues, in stead of skating over the issues, and please stop metatalking.
How about some insights into the European financial crisis - you are Greek and have Greek connections? What are your take on the current GOP primaries (in my view they are signs of a historic watershed in American politics)? What should President Obama do - to boost the economy and create jobs? What would happen if President Obama loses this years important election?

I know an editor should appear impartial - but considering how HuffPo went from a clear liberal bias to embracing rightwing opinions (after new ownership came in), it seems about time to take a firm stand.

Nancy, on her watch 8.5 million jobs lost and 5 trillion new debt, but her personal wealth went up 60%, and the other one, don't make me laugh.

I agree about the local solutions. For example, importing your mayor from a wealthy suburb like Wilmette by way of Washington DC is an incredibly bad idea.

It's like the Simpson's episode when Itchy and Scratchy cartoons go off the air. The kids come outside, see each other, and for the first time, start to interact normally, playing outside, enjoying the sunshine and so on.

We need to get off the corporate Media drip and instead take in fresh alternatives from local resources.

What goes in here, comes out there. So if an industrial strength input goes into our minds and bodies, we aren't going to "produce" sunshine and lollypops now, are we?

A thought.

I attended this conference. Arianna's remarks were spot on. Not so much Nancy's. The best speaker at the conference was Thomas Friedman.

The Mayors for the most part get it, the problem arises when it goes to the state then onto Washington the disconnect happens especially when it can't be used as a running point for the politicians, that is where we the people end and we the corporations take over!

I feel for America if the solutions are coming from local politicians. Anything they try to do positive, the corporations that buy off the state legislatures will smack them down. Corporations corruption runs deep.

Irrespective of what many have commented down stream; being rich is not an affliction or a disease, you can be wealthy and be compassionate at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. Notwithstanding, are the two of them advocates of the masses - I don't know. But, they have a platform, which you and I don't have. and are advocating, to some level, the issues we would expound.

These two have been pushing federal government take over of everything. Now it is local government that makes the difference. Do they make a difference in education or is that the DOE? Do they make a difference in Dodd frank finicial regulations that are killing business? Do they make a difference when EPA want to charge farmers for dust? Do local government make a difference when locals governments try to crack down on illegals and get sued by the federal government. All things these two have stood behind. Pelosi made how much investing when she knew the new regulations on business(150million last year) Arianna has push federal government regulating everything and now says local goverment that she help take power from can save the world. You two are a bad joke.

That farmer's dust ruins your whole argument. A totally manufactured crises like the president is trying to take your guns.

HAHAHAHA, RIGHT OUT OF the GOP/TPer call center 3-ring binder. Why you got a whole dull nickel for that post, didn't you, skippy? If it were a real zinger, you might get a whole new shiny dime! How about that, boys and girls!!!!??? Btw, there's kool-aid in the concessions room and if you make your quota of posts and stay past morning, you'll get free slices of cheesie or pizzaronie pizza. How about that! And if you work really hard, say 24/7, you might one day make assistant manager!

How's the free cheesie pizza slices at the GOP/TPer call center in East Cupcake, West Dakota? A/C on full blast? Or is that only that the manager has turned the heat way down to save on costs?

You're doing really great. Keep it up, and you might make call center assistant manager one day!
