Joe Paterno In Serious Condition: Spokesman

Joe Paterno

GENARO C. ARMAS   01/21/12 10:26 PM ET   AP

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno's doctors say the former Penn State coach's condition has become "serious" after he experienced complications from lung cancer in recent days.

The winningest major college football coach of all time, Paterno was diagnosed shortly after Penn State's Board of Trustees ousted him Nov. 9 in the aftermath of the child sex abuse charges against former assistant Jerry Sandusky. Paterno's been getting treatment since, and his health problems worsened when he broke his pelvis – an injury that first cropped up when he was accidentally hit in preseason practice last year.

"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," family spokesman Dan McGinn said in a brief statement Saturday to The Associated Press. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious.

"His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time," he said.

Paterno's sons Scott and Jay each took to Twitter Saturday night to refute reports that their father had died.

Wrote Jay Paterno: "I appreciate the support & prayers. Joe is continuing to fight."

The 85-year-old Paterno has been in the hospital since Jan. 13 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted by his bedside.

Roughly 200 students and townspeople gathered Saturday night at a statue of Paterno just outside a gate at Beaver Stadium. Some brought candles, while others held up their smart phones to take photos of the scene. The mood was somber, with no chanting or shouting.

"Drove by students at the Joe statue," Jay Paterno tweeted. "Just told my Dad about all the love & support--inspiring him."

The final days of Paterno's Penn State career were easily the toughest in his 61 years with the university and 46 seasons as head football coach.

Sandusky, a longtime defensive coordinator who was on Paterno's staff during two national title seasons, was arrested Nov. 5 and ultimately charged with sexually abusing a total of 10 boys over 15 years. His arrest sparked outrage not just locally but across the nation and there were widespread calls for Paterno to quit.

Paterno announced late on Nov. 9 that he would retire at the end of the season but just hours later he received a call from board vice chairman John Surma, telling him he had been terminated as coach. By that point, a crowd of students and media were outside the Paterno home. When news spread that Paterno had been dumped, there was rioting in State College.

Police on Saturday evening had barricaded off the block where Paterno lives, and a police car was stationed about 50 yards from his home. Several people had gathered in the living room of the house. No one was outside, other than reporters and photographers stationed there.

Trustees said this week they pushed Paterno out in part because he failed a moral responsibility to report an allegation made in 2002 against Sandusky to authorities outside the university. They also felt he had challenged their authority and that, as a practical matter, with all the media in town and attention to the Sandusky case, he could no longer run the team.

Paterno testified before the grand jury investigating Sandusky that he had relayed to his bosses an accusation that came from graduate assistant Mike McQueary, who said he saw Sandusky abusing a boy in the showers of the Penn State football building.

Paterno told the Post that he didn't know how to handle the charge, but a day after McQueary visited him, he spoke to the athletic director and the administrator with oversight over the campus police.

Wick Sollers, Paterno's lawyer, called the board's comments this week self-serving and unsupported by the facts. Paterno fully reported what he knew to the people responsible for campus investigations, Sollers said.

"He did what he thought was right with the information he had at the time," Sollers said.

Sandusky says he is innocent and is out on bail, awaiting trial.

The back and forth between Paterno's representative and the board reflects a trend in recent weeks, during which Penn State alumni – and especially former players, including Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris – have questioned the trustees' actions and accused them of failing to give Paterno a chance to defend himself.

Three town halls, in Pittsburgh, suburban Philadelphia and New York City, seemed to do little to calm the situation and dozens of candidates have now expressed interest in running for the board, a volunteer position that typically attracts much less interest.

While everyone involved has said the focus should be on Sandusky's accusers and their ordeals, the abuse scandal put a sour ending on Paterno's sterling career. Paterno won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and those two national championships, the last in the 1986 season. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL.

With his thick glasses, rolled up khakis and white socks, Paterno was synonymous with Penn State and was seen in many ways as the archetypal football coach, maintaining throughout his career that it was important not just to win but win with integrity.

Joe Paterno was a highly respected, admired and beloved figure on the U of Penn campus for 61 years, 46 spent coaching football. He is a man of high moral and ethical standards. He followed the rules and was an honorable man.

All that was thrown out the window in the blink of an eye. He never witnessed molestation by Sandusky but acted quickly when Mike McQueary reported to him that he had seen Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the shower room. He immediately informed the athletic director and university administrator, which is what you do in the chain of commander, and waied for the police to begin their investigation.

Paterno again followed the rules. It wasn't his place to call the police on hearsay but willing to tell the police what little he knew. He immediately became the scapegoat by the university, media and posters such as you who have villified and accused him from day one just because he is Joe Paterno, not because he was wrong in his actions.

Now, at 85, Joe is fighting for his life, possibly not fighting at all. The man he was no longer exists thanks to the haters who have destroyed him. If it is the Lord's plan to take him then so be it. He will be welcomed into Heaven and once again feel the love for the good he has done in his life. GOD bless you Joe. You didn't deserve the hatred!

Excellent and very insightful post. Thank you for your comments, The Board of Trustees should be ashamed of what they did to Paterno as is was tantamount to a death sentence for a man who had dedicated his entiire 61-year working life to the university.

Two corrections however, It is not the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) but the Pennsylvania State Unversity (State College). Also, Joe spent his entire 61 years there, among other accomplishments, coaching football at PSU. Before becoming the PSU head coach for 46 years, he was Assistant Coach to then head coach Rip Engle who brought hin to PSU from Brown Unversity.

I wonder if he had stayed at Brown whether their board would have treated him as shabbily as has the PSU Board of Muckees?

Someone coming up the hall heard the "slap slap slap" sound of flesh-on-flesh. It turns out they were doing CPR, haha.

Thoughts and prayers.

Frankly, I couldn't believe it when his doctors were quoted as saying he had a "treatable" case of lung cancer. Lung cancer is a killer. I should know. My wife lasted six months from start to finish. And the docs told us they had it licked. Not even close. A terrible way to die.

This is sad. Joe Paterno coach for years. Most of the time when older adults work into their 80`s and long as they can in doing something they love to do.Working up in age helps their livelyhood in keeping active and alert. The job maybe all they have to actually keeping them alive. If they no longer have that outlet and it is no longer there to do,they go straight down hill in bad health and even die.

It's a shame when a "job" is all that someone has.

it's beyond sad that another adult (mc query)witnesses a rape actively going on and simply walks away and tells paterno a day or so later....and sandusky was already retired,so what was he doing there with a boy in the shower /on the premises ??..and all paterno does is pass the buck to another.
The more this is out here, the more should be pondering how many are involved as molestors.how many were molested in the past and how many are considered one of sandusky's BOYS that are now men and also abusers and procurers.
their testimonies are full of holes and something else as well.

CONFESS JOE

God is the best judge of all. It is comforting to know that Mr. Paterno is safe in his hands now. No more pain and sorrow. No more personal attacks. He did the best he could and attained greatness during his lifetime. ""He did what he thought was right with the information he had at the time," I believe that. May he rest in peace and I pray that God will comfort his family.

And when he stands before Him who judges in Perfect Righteousness, he just may hear these words,"Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels." Matt. 25:41

Oh my god, some of the comments I have read are so rude and judgmental. I think he has paid enough. The number one guilty one would be Sandusky. He is the sleeze in all of this. But of course he is out on bail. Everyone pays the price for Sanduskys actions, the kids, Joe Paterno and his family. I would like to send Prayers and Blessings out to the Paterno family. My father is suffering with the exact same illness right now. I know how Joe and the family have suffered through this. God Bless

Does anyone else think its coincidental, that Paterno falls so gravely ill AFTER the scandal? I mean, we know there was a cover up. Just consider, that maybe Paterno knew this was coming and let the cat out of the bag because he knew his time was up and he would face at worst being "let go". Which was going to happen anyway.

I'm just sayin. I find it hard to believe Paterno did all he could. Why would he risk his legacy, years ago, when he could just keep it covered till it was to late to do anything about it.

Yeah, go ahead and blame the media.

The Board of Trustees did their share to try to kill him too.

Joe will probably leave us in the not too distant future. I don't think he can handle not having the power and adoring fans. He must have thought that he was bullet proof when he was a part of sweeping things under the rug. When he passes there will be a great out pouring of grief from the Ped State faithful.

I only hope that in your rush to judgement that members of your family suffer the same accusations without proof that you so delightfully wish upon him.

Peace Joe, Peace.
You gave your best in your career. A creep put you in a bad situation and you told the truth. I wish the university would restore your good name.
May your family hold their heads up high because the bottom line - You are a decent man.

Choices
As an educator I understand the struggle Joe had to deal with to tell his superiors or call the report in to the police. I experienced a situation where a teacher was reprimanded for directly calling DCFS about a possible child abuse case in front of her colleagues. The supervisors stated that they must be informed first and “they” would handle the situation. I stood up in the meeting and disagreed with their directive and told the staff that if they are the first to know by law “they must report it”. I stated that I would notify my superiors but I wouldn’t leave the room without seeing them make the call or that I would. Many would not choose to take this stand because they would risk their job. I took the risk because I knew the law and secondly my personal morals.
I didn’t wish bad luck on a man who did so much for others and he was committed to his craft. However, I wonder if he was following the established rules set by the institution he worked for and what are the laws on this issue in the state of Pennsylvania?
The other question is as parents …”Why did the child feel comfortable reporting this to his parents?
Rest in peace Joe.
10:37 AM on 01/22/2012
Teachers in PA are prohibted from reporting things of this nature to anyone other than thari their superiors. They can and will be fired for not following established procedure. Joe did exactly what PA procedure required him to do, And then the Board of Muckees at PSU fired him for following the rules. Too bad the Board of Muckees (doctors, lawyers, bankers, politicians, etc,) never took the time to read PA law applicable to educators within the state.

Even the Governor of Pennsylvania (a member of the Board of Muckees) didnt take the care to learn the educator law!.
12:13 AM on 01/23/2012
This needs to be shared with the media because everyone isn't aware of the PA law(s).

As of 10PM tonight, Joe Paterno is not dead. Now for you hypocrites out there who never made a mistake, never broke the law, never harmed your family, never harmed a friend, always paid your taxes, never stole and who led perfect lives, take a look into the mirror before you attack an old man who is terminally from a devistating disease. I hope you are as hard on yourselves as you are on this man.
