Microsoft Endorses Gay Marriage In Washington State

Microsoft Gay Marriage

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/21/2012 3:37 pm Updated: 01/21/2012 3:37 pm

Microsoft has officially come out in support of two pieces of legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state.

Microsoft, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, explained its support by saying that discrimination of any kind lowers the quality of employees that the company is able to hire. A statement on The Official Microsoft Blog titled "Marriage Equality in Washington State Would Be Good for Business" reads in part:

Marriage equality in Washington would put employers here on an equal footing with employers in the six other states that already recognize the committed relationships of same-sex couples - Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. This in turn will help us continue to compete for talent.

Microsoft has joined forces with five other companies, including Vulcan (founded by none other than Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen), Nike, RealNetworks, Group Health Cooperative and Concur, sent a joint letter to Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, which according to The Atlantic, read simply, "We write you today to show the support of our respective companies for SB 6239 and HB 2516 recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples."

Both bills are set for public hearing on January 23. If passed the legislation would allow civil marriages between same-sex couples.

According to The Seattle Times, the House bill already has enough support among lawmakers to pass. As of Friday, the Senate bill still needed one more supporting vote for passage.

Microsoft is a long-time supporter of gay rights and marriage equality. It was one of the first Fortune 500 companies to provide benefits for the same-sex partners of its employees, according to Microsoft. According to GLEAM, Microsoft's gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employee resource group, Microsoft was also one of the first companies in the world to write a nondiscrimination policy that protected against discrimination due to sexual orientation.

As reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal, in November, Microsoft joined Google and 70 other companies in publicly opposing the Defense of Marriage Act, which sought to define marriage as only valid between a man and a woman.

In 2005, Microsoft pulled its support for a bill banning discrimination against gays and lesbians. The company was harshly criticized after the bill went on to fail by one vote. At the time, The Seattle Times reported that Microsoft was accused of pulling its support due to pressure from a powerful Redmond pastor. However, a Microsoft spokesperson told The Times that the withdrawal of support was due to the company's push to concentrate lobbying efforts on other issues.

Amazon has signed up as well. "Amazon is joining other Pacific Northwest companies, including Microsoft, Starbucks and Nike, in support of Washington State's marriage equality bills. The spirit of these bills is consistent with our longstanding employment practices.”

People should be happy. It's their business, not mine. I don't really care what they endorse. I just want my PC to work....

Huh... I didn't see this one coming. There is such a thing as corporate responsibility after all -- at least as far as Microsoft is concerned with equal rights.

"Microsoft is a long-time supporter of gay rights and marriage equality."

Uh... not so much. They jump on the bandwagon late and with "caution". Still, better with us than against us, even if it is self-serving of them.

Another win in this long battle. A win for Washington, a win for America, a win for equality, but most importantly a win for Microsoft. I myself am an Apple guy, but I use Microsoft products everyday (who doesn't, right?) and I am happy to know they are on the right side of history.

Microsoft is a powerhouse in Washington State. They need to step up the pressure and could easily secure more votes for the bill. What would Seattle and Washington state do without Microsoft in town?

Three cheers for Microsoft. No doubt Apple has the same stance under it's new CEO and hopefully Google will follow suit particularly as a lot of us now use the Android OS on some of our portables. Any jobs going?

Good for MSFT. My partner and I have a MA marriage, and his company reloacted us (promotion) to a state that does not recognized it. It has been horrible living here, and if we ever get back to a state were it is recognized, we won't leave it, except for another that will also honor us as equal.
MSFT is a huge company that need to recruit tallent and move employees around. They probably find it hard to get people to move to WA from MA, if they will lose their marriages. After Silicon Valley, MA has the next most densly populated high tech area in the country, along the 128 belt that circles around the W/SW portion of Boston.

One would hope that a company like Microsoft would have at least remember they are selling products to the majority if not everybody and not just 2%. Even California rejected "gay marriage" - whatever that is.

I am fairly sure they are selling their products to the majority.

Whatever a poll says, BFD, the electorate spoke and the discriminatory court system took an electoral victory away because it wasn't PC for inclination. Hey, if you want to do the homosexual thing - do it, but don't expect an imprimatur from everyone else.

Here are poll results for 2010...

"A February 2010 ABC News/Washington Post poll found support for allowing same sex couples to marry at 47% (compared to 39% in 2005) and opposition at 50% (compared to 58% in 2005), while those with no opinion on the matter was at 3% (the same as in 2005).[18]

A May 2010 Gallup Poll found opponents of legalizing same-sex marriage outnumbered supporters in the United States, by 53% to 44% (59% to 37% in 2005). Opposition was tied for the lowest Gallup has measured.[19]

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Poll released on August 12, 2010, American support for same-sex marriage increased over the previous year. This poll showed that 49% of 513 respondents thought gays and lesbians do have a constitutional right to get married and have their marriage recognized by law as valid, an increase from 45% in 2009. 51% disagreed, a decrease from 54% in 2009. In another sample of 496 respondents, the same poll showed that 52% thought gays and lesbians should have a constitutional right to get married and have their marriage recognized by law as valid, and 46% said they should not. The poll has a sampling error of ±4.5%.[20]

LOL. 53% of Americans support marriage equality. What rock have you been hiding under? And, in California, now the numbers have become even more supportive, probably enough to counter the outside interference from the Mormon and Catholic churches.
12:33 AM on 01/23/2012
I'm sorry - outside interference? I remember in 2008 the liberal pundits suggesting that perhaps the high Black turnout was responsible for Proposition 8 passing. Imagine that, minorities oppose it...if you look at the city precincts in the LA area you'll see Proposition 8 won. South Gate, Paramount, Lynwood, etc.

Do you want authentic tolerance or to oppress the religious like Mark Leno is trying by converting the California school system into re-education camps? Let's have authentic tolerance.
