Ron Paul South Carolina Primary Results 2012

By BETH FOUHY   01/21/12 09:05 PM ET  AP

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Brushing off his poor last place finish in the South Carolina primary Saturday, Republican Ron Paul promised supporters the momentum around his libertarian-leaning campaign would continue.

"This is the beginning of a long, hard job," the Texas congressman told fans gathered at a sports bar in Columbia, the state capital.

Paul vowed to battle on in states holding caucuses over the next several weeks, saying the fight now is to amass delegates rather than to notch splashy wins.

"We will be promoting the whole idea of getting more delegates, because that's the name of the game," Paul said.

But the weak fourth-place finish was still a blow to Paul, who came in a respectable second to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in New Hampshire last week and placed third in Iowa behind Romney and Rick Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania. And it raised anew the question of whether he was in the race to win or simply wanted his views to gain maximum influence within the party.

Paul's advisers had long since written off the contest in South Carolina, a socially conservative state with a large military population advisers knew would be skeptical of Paul's views. Paul opposes abortion rights but has not made it a centerpiece of his message. He's also called for deep cuts to military spending as a way to reduce the debt and balance the federal budget.

Nonetheless, Paul's team had hoped he would edge Santorum in the state. He did not.

Paul's performance in South Carolina underscored the limitations of his message with Republican voters, who share many of Paul's views on cutting taxes and spending but have yet to embrace his largely isolationist foreign policy positions. He came under fire in a debate this week from GOP rivals when he questioned the U.S. mission that killed Osama bin Laden.

Paul tried to cast his showing in positive terms Saturday, saying he was a constant in a race that had seen several sharp fluctuations among the other contenders.

"Ever notice how the other candidates go up and then down? I am proud of our efforts at steady growth," Paul told supporters. The group cheered, yelling "President Paul! President Paul!"

Paul was heading home to Texas from South Carolina for a day off before flying to Tampa, Fla., Monday for a nationally televised debate on NBC. Paul was also scheduled to appear in a CNN debate Thursday but was otherwise bypassing Florida, which holds its primary Jan. 31.

Advisers said Paul would probably head to Maine, whose caucuses begin Feb. 7, and then onto caucus states like Minnesota, Nevada and Colorado. His advisers have long promised to follow the model used by President Barack Obama's campaign in 2008, believing Paul's young, Internet-savvy army would turn out to caucus for him in large numbers.

Beth Fouhy in this portion of your article "his largely isolationist foreign policy positions", you are clearly exploiting the emotive meaning of the word isolationist as a subtle slight towards Dr. Paul's foreign policy plan. If you are going to use such tactics perhaps you could also explain how opening foreign economic markets, ending pointless sanctions and embargoes, and opening a dialogue with those nations suddenly qualifies as isolationist foreign policy?

Who cares? Who said isolationism is a bad thing. Stop fighting over semantics. He is close enough to isolationist as candidates go.
03:48 AM on 02/17/2012
Actually my point is semantics, it is in fact how the word isolationist is intentionally misused to manipulate you the reader into drawing a false image of what is really going down. Which you also did by choosing the word semantics. Semantics has an inherent negative meaning which you hoped to apply here; at the same time you could very well have used lexicology, which would not lead the reader with deceptive imagery, or pragmatics if you prefer. So, you are demonstrating, by your use of the word, not only my point but also your knowledge and of and deliberate use of Orwellian doublespeak. To keep it simple you and the writer of this have the appearance of wanting to mislead the reader by using words that have a negative social stigma.

After Paul's poor performance in South Carolina, his campaign has decided not to run ads in Florida.Paul finished 5th in Florida in 2008.I guess Paul figures there are too many Seniors and Baby Boomers in Florida who aren't excited about his talk of abolishing Social Security,Medicare and Medicaid.

Actually, it's because Florida, like the country, is a winner-takes-all system, and he knows he isn't likely to win. Additionally, Florida is only worth 50 votes.

Yeah. Like the tomato said, Paul knows he could not win...for the reasons he stated.

And the winner take all excuse is anemic. EVERY state starting in April is a winner take all state...and they are only worth 1099 electoral votes collectively.

Ron Paul delivered the keynote address at the 50th Anniversary of the John Birch Society.
Paul has embraced many of the alarming positions of the JBS over the years, including their belief that the UN plans on taking over the world and introducing a One World Religion where Churches and other houses of worship in America will be boarded up.The JBS is a radical right wing organization that was even condemned by leading Conservatives such as the late William F.Buckley jr.
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want the JBS having any influence in the White House.

Perfect example of taking things off topic. This is about the primarys not the John Birch society. Posting things to start flames should be above a Moderator and trying to keep things on topic should be your concern first.
We have clearly seen your stand on Ron Paul and we have also seen how others clear baiting, flaming and outright lies are allowed on this forum and yet some posts in defense have failed to show up after moderation, Is that not interesting or is that clear outright censorship on the part of the moderator?
Please stay on the topic of the article and be a better example for us all are remove your tools which some see you are abusing.

Another very good and relevant post. F/Can't Fan again.

I am tired of his disciples arguing that anything from his past is now irrelevant. They are what makes him the man he is! I have recently been amused by one of his disciples with this amazing statement: "FREEDOM LIBERTY is lost on those who choose to use facts."

Along with his friendships and collaboration with Grand Wizard David Duke and White Supremacist Jared Taylor, and his decidedly peculiar claim that the CRA was damaging to Liberty (without appending the words "of Whites Only") this shows a long and very concerning racist slant to his character which has never been satisfactorily denied or apologised for.

Ron Paul was never going to do well in South Carolina because he isn't a religious nut who promises to force everyone to abide by their faith through enactment of new laws. His biggest support base is young and independent voters. He will do much better in more liberal states, like he did in NH.

how could ANYONE want to vote for Obama and those in Congress who passed the National Defense Authorization Act which basically attempts to justify the evil actions of the Bush administration.

it's amazing how much the duopoly political partisan system has brainwashed the masses into thinking one dimensionally.

again, if the People cannot understand Ron Paul's principles of liberty, then they are simply not yet ready for freedom. i presume it has to get a LOT WORSE for the masses to wake up... and i still wonder if they will ever.

more people need to learn the principle of liberty which are wonderfully presented in this video:

". . . if the People cannot understand Ron Paul's principles of liberty, then they are simply not yet ready for freedom."

What a supremely arrogant statement: words of a completely over-self-assured person with (apparently) little life experience or understanding of humanity.

How about those who like bits of what he says, understand exactly what their personal liberty is and means, have read the Paul Manifesto, have an excellent grasp of language, but do not like major parts of his policies, such as his appalling ideas for environmental non-protection?

It seems that non-agreement with the Book of Paul condemns the most intelligent and caring of dissenters to being part of the "masses", as they are disparagingly called.

For all of his years in Congress,Ron Paul has had two pieces of legislation become Law.He's been very ineffective as a Congressman.
Of Paul's two bills one was to prevent Eminent Domain Seizure of a Church in New York
and the other was a bill that transferred control of a Lake Texoma Dam Project from Federal control to Texas State control.
I'm not sure why anyone would think that Paul as President would be any more successful working with Congress to get things done than he has been as a Congressman.

Speaker Boehner promised to make job creation a priority, but it appears he was less than honest.
02:18 PM on 01/23/2012
This isn't entirely the same. The GOP Senate have used the filibuster at such a statistical aberration that one can really only conclude that the Senate has been remarkably obstructionist, or that Obama has been extremely partisan in his proposed legislation. The general public and history suggests that the GOP has been remarkably obstructionist.

That being said, a President Paul would likely usher in an odd kind of bipartisanship --- every piece of legislation would have to have 67% or Paul would likely veto it on the slightest whiff of a spending increase, tax increase, or overreaching federalism.

While I disagree with Ron Paul and the majority of his supporters,I admire their staunch defense of Paul's untenable positions. In fact,I've suggested on many occasions that Dr.Paul's supporters urge him to run third party after he fails to win the Republican nomination.

Gary Johnson has rather spiked Paul's musket by dropping out of the Repub selection process to become the Libertarian candidate, so I expect that the Ronettes are going to see their candidate for only another few weeks before he disappears altogether.

That does depend, of course, on his disciples not taking the issue of his losing "by a conspiracy of the GOP hierarchy" to the SCOTUS.

Speak truth or come out with facts. If not, then just leave us alone.

I never knew how soft the modern day intellectual is on this site. The arguments against Ron Paul frankly are superficial, adolescent, and lack tact.

I mean, how many people on here are educated but lack the ability to use reason or logically make an argument against Ron Paul. It is embarrassing.

Its sad...it shows how much the two party system has destroyed people's ability to think for themselves. To many talking points or name calls...not enough discussion of ideas.

We have 100 years and still face racism every day. That Act caused people to resent and to separate the races. Martin Luther King Jr said you have to get to a point that you don’t talk about races to overcome racism. That Act forced people to go underground with racism. Baloney. Corporate taxes are more than enough to cover military, social, and general gov't functions. If the Banker-Megacorp Party didn't make legislate themselves loopholes to avoid taxation -- General Electric Co. (GE 0.00%) and Pepco Holdings Inc. (POM 1.63%), earned a total of $156 billion in pretax U.S. profits in the years they paid no income tax, yet received so many tax breaks that they reported negative taxes — a total of negative $22 billion, the study said. A tax rate as low as -58% -- Google pays around 2.4%.

SEARCH "Thirty companies paid no U.S. income tax 2008-2010: report | Reuters"

We dont need the IRS, we need to get our country back from the Banker-Megacorp Party. Close the tax loopholes. Prosecute the fraudsters.

Obama has done nothing but facilitate the Banker-Megacorp Party. Romney would do the same - he has the same backers. You'd love him.

Just so you know, the FED does not print money, that would be the Treasury. The Fed does control the “monetary base,” the sum of bank reserves and currency in circulation. So when people talk about them printing money, what they really mean is that the Fed expanded the monetary base. So you are saying that if the FED was to drasticaly increase the monetary base than we would have devastating inflation? I guess it would depend on what you consider devastating. After the fall of Lehman Brothers the Fed began lending large sums to banks as well as buying a wide range of other assets in the process adding large amounts to bank reserves. And again in Feb, 2010 they again increased the monetary base, ultimately trippling it. Now 3 years later do we have Super-infalation? Inflation has fluctuated, but over all consumer prices have risen just 4.5% and the average inflation rate is 1.5%. Im not saying your premise is wrong, but can you state your proof?
