Yuri Wright, Top Football Recruit, Expelled From Don Bosco Prep Over Tweets

Yuri Wright

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 01/21/12 03:23 PM ET Updated: 01/21/12 03:23 PM ET

By all accounts, Yuri Wright had a very bright future ahead him due to his prowess on the football field. The cornerback at New Jersey football powerhouse Don Bosco Prep was rated by Rivals.com as one of the top 100 prospects in the nation and had dozens of scholarship offers from coast to coast.

Now, as a result of a slew of sexually explicit and racially charged tweets, Wright is going to need to search for a new place to finish high school.

According to ESPN.com, Wright has been expelled from Don Bosco as a result of a series of tweets he made, which were reportedly ongoing between July and January of this year, that were deemed offensive.

Click Here to read a compilation of some of Wright's tweets.

Wright has since deleted his account, but several outlets have reported that Michigan, one of his finalists, has pulled their offer in the wake of the expulsion.

"He's a good kid and I think he has a bright college future and I wish him the best of luck," Don Bosco coach Greg Toal told The Star-Ledger in New Jersey. :There is no question Don Bosco had to do what it had to do."

There are plenty of instances of athletes getting in hot water over questionable tweets, just ask Gilbert Arenas. Given that this type of incident is all too common, by now one would imagine that even a high schooler would know better than to put such racy messages in the public sphere, but regardless, do you feel the punishment of expulsion fit the crime in this case?

Ok I read the tweets. don't agree with his ideas and words, but this is the way many teens talk and really don't see why he would be kicked out of school for this. This is part of life the way it is today. I am 64 and have worked with teens for many years. Nothing new here.

His tweets are most random timelines on #BlackTwitter. Nothing to see here, folks.

Employers and colleges are using social media to make decisions whether to accept someone or not. If people think FB or Twitter are freedom of speech, well in a sense they are. But in the court of public opinion, they aren't. Schools and potential employers are free to pick and choose. Because of his actions and the way the Web works, this story about Yuri will be around (may he live to a ripe old age) longer than he will. You have to talk to your kids about sex & drugs, now you have to start discussing growing up online.

Hate to say it but I still don't understand why the go to punishment for kids going astray is to kick them out of school. Don't their actions prove they need more education?

He needs more education, yes. Less football would be an excellent start.

Well, since I'm ONLY a college professor, I'll start by saying he has a ton of work ahead to catch up....Perhaps respecting others and learning the English language would be an excellent start.

This may be a silly question, but where are his parents in all this?

Answer: probably getting ready to sue Don Bosco for some reason instead of teaching their child being a football hero isn't everything in life.

And in this country, I wouldn't doubt it one bit!

Mom and dad should be proud of that boy~ LOL!

If you read his tweets, his dad drives (recklessly it seems) and he doesn't trust his own mom, so sounds like this young man has more issues than National Geographic.
11:16 AM on 01/23/2012
Just read all of his tweets and this guy has some issues. Very vulgar mouth and almost zero respect for anyone else. I hope someone sits him down and straightens his rear end out. I can't believe people would tweet stuff like this?!

Interesting he gets expelled from school for tweets. That is kind of jacked up don't you think? Isn't it just freedom of tweets? The colleges saying wait a minute I think did the right thing. However if he was a rapper this would be a non story. I think the "im going to marry a white woman.." was what did him in. They saw that and were like "OHHH He LL S no! "

Yeah, the notion of black athletes marrying white women is so taboo! No one denied him the right of expression. Only the gov't can. Some common sense on his part would've gone a long way.

LOL sometimes when you think you already have it made. You think you can do things that your momma wouldn't be proud of. I dig what you are saying.

You forced that one....just because someone's talking explicitly about sex doesn't necessarily conjure up immediate images of Penn State.

Penn State jokes are old news.
