Apple Q1 2012 Earnings Call Could Reveal Chinks In Armor

Apple Q1 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc coasts into 2012 with a strong wind in its sails, a clutch of envelope-pushing products in its hold, a record share price, and a steady hand at the tiller.

But it's very success - with the market-leading iPad and the voice-enabled iPhone 4S - is luring cheaper rivals to the surface.

Google Inc's Android, launched a few years ago and taking aim squarely at the high-end iOS, continues to attract cellphone makers. Amazon.com Inc's Kindle Fire, half the cost of the iPad, is expected to have chipped away at the lower end of the tablet market.

Finally, though many on Wall Street, betting that an iTV and 4G iPhones and iPads will again pack its stores, continue to bank on a share-price climb to as high as $700, some begin to question the sustainability of Apple's torrid growth pace.

Apple tacked on $43 billion to its top line in fiscal 2011, lifting it to $108.25 billion - a 65 percent increase from the previous year.

Barry Jaruzelski, a consumer hardware business expert and partner at consulting firm Booz & Co, said to sustain that is effectively to conjure a Fortune 500 company out of thin air - year after year.

"You become a victim of your own success," he said. "Can you grow the existing products that much, or can you create a new category that creates $10 billion to $20 billion? That is the challenge."

When Apple reports earnings January 24, many investors for the first time might be watching for chinks in the armor, especially given Apple's first revenue miss since 2008 for the October quarter.

"The risk is the sustainability of what they have been doing," said ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall. "They have put up a huge number and the question is can they continue to penetrate with their current existing product portfolio at these price levels?"

The fear is that the number of people who can afford an iPad or an iPhone is dwindling, he added.

RIVALS HOT ON HEELS

Apple has gone on a tear the last few years.

With $81.6 billion of cash, surging sales across product lines - most notably its best-selling iPhone and iPad - and fevered anticipation that it might make a big, game-changing bet on TV, many still say Apple has only one way to go this year: up.

As one of the companies that is a leader in major trends in technology - mobile connectivity and the cloud - Apple's revenue is expected easily to rise 30 percent this year and nearly 50 percent in its fiscal first quarter.

The average estimates for sales of Apple's products during the fiscal first quarter, which includes the holiday shopping season, are roughly 31 million iPhones, 13.5 million to 14 million iPads and 5 million Mac computers. But investors wouldn't be surprised if Apple handily beats these estimates.

Apple's stock trades at about 15 times earnings, versus 10 times for Microsoft and 21 times for Google. Some argue for excluding Apple's massive, $80 billion-plus in cash and investments from the valuation, meaning Apple trades at a much lower multiple.

"This is just a stepping point for it to go another 15 to 20 percent higher than it is now," said Michael Yoshikami, CEO of YCMNET Advisors, which owns Apple shares, adding that international expansion will drive much of the upside.

"The stock is cheap relative to companies like Google. It's a good value, especially considering what a growth trajectory this company is on."

Its stock gained 25 percent in 2011, adding about $77 billion to Apple's market cap, and touched an all-time high of $431.36 this past week. That's a remarkable run for any company in a volatile stock market, yet the stock is way off from an average expectation for about $550.

Increasingly formidable competition and the pressure it could bring to bear on margins may be part of the story. The $200 Kindle, for example, is sold at a loss by Amazon as it tries to get a toe-hold in the tablet market.

But Apple could employ its successful iPhone pricing strategy, along with its mighty supply chain, to the iPad to counter cheaper rivals and maintain its dominance, said Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity.

Apple could "offer iPad 2 at a reduced price of roughly $350", he said, adding that the new iPad 3 could drive a high-tier tablet upgrade cycle with the discounted iPad 2 driving sales into lower price points.

According to the latest research from Nielsen, Apple is also closing the gap on Android, with 44.5 percent of people who acquired a smartphone recently saying they bought an iPhone when asked in December, compared with just 25.1 percent in October.

But Android continues to lead with 46.3 percent of all smartphone owners surveyed last quarter reporting they have an Android-based mobile phone, while Apple had a 30 percent share.

Investors, though, by and large still see the iPad and iPhone as the far superior products in their classes.

"We also expect continued iPad strength, though refresh timing could create a sales gap," said William Power, an analyst with Baird Equity Research.

"Although we do expect more meaningful tablet competition from Amazon and others this year, including the Kindle Fire, we believe the iPad remains best positioned at the higher end."

"I'VE CRACKED IT"

For now, Apple's bulls hold sway, with 50 of 55 analysts covering the stock rating it a Strong Buy or Buy. Among its advantages are the global spread of the iPhone, which should sell more than 130 million units this year, and the mystique of an iPad that a plethora of rivals from Hewlett Packard to Research in Motion have not been able to best.

Apple's MacBook Air has spawned a whole industry of thin and light laptops that everyone from Intel Inc to HP to Asian computer makers is trying to match.

Some observers are now willing to bet that Apple can indeed pull a rabbit out of its hat with an "iTV", thereby producing a new multibillion-dollar growth business.

Many expect Apple to launch a voice-controlled TV in the second half, one of the most talked about topics at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"At CES many (manufacturers) showcased smart TVs, which we think were quite good first shots (often with gesture and voice control integrated), but are unlikely to match the seamless user interface of the upcoming iTV," said Peter Misek, an analyst with Jefferies.

Apple has neither confirmed nor denied that it was working on a TV, but late co-founder Steve Jobs did reveal to biographer Walter Isaacson his interest in reinventing the television set. "I finally cracked it," he told Isaacson.

Apple is expected to report earnings of $10.07 a share on revenue of $38.76 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Wall Street is also forecasting a gross margin of 40.76 percent, up from the previous period.

I own an Ipad, Xoom, Droid Razr, Iphone 4 (wife), IMac, Macbook, PC desktop and laptop. Yes, it's a lot of gadgets but I run a busy home office. Anyway, I didn't buy the Ipad and the Xoom. Both were given to me as gifts by my vendors. After using the Ipad and the Xoom, I didn't see much of a difference. Yes, apple has a lot more apps but honestly, if you get down to the basic use of the gadget for non-time wasting purposes, Apple doesn't do much more than its competitors.

Most people I see on subways are using their tablets to read a book or play games. If that is the reason why you need a tablet, investing so much money on an Ipad is quite a waste. Of course, if owning an Apple makes you feel cooler then you can't put a price on that.

I use the Droid Razr as my primary phone and it does a lot more than the Iphone. Its voice activated response is great, the android marketplace is quite sufficient.

I lost confidence in any professional writer who can't tell the difference between "it's" and "its." Thus, I never made it past this buffoon's second paragraph.

These journalists keep writing the same prognostications quarter after quarter, product after product. Of course, we all know that a clock is broken twice a day, so these idiots will eventually get their predictions right, if that means a god damn thing.

"The iTV will have to be aimed at the wealthy. Most of us our happy with ... that are cheap"

Why would only the rich enjoy a TV that really connected well with the internet? The AppleTV is quite well made, and with the combination of shows from iTunes, Netflix and over the air broadcasts an iTV could receive you could easily switch to basic cable and save a lot of money.

I think the poor enjoy saving money just as much as rich people.

"Instead of buying a second iPad, I gave the one we have to my wife... "

I thought about doing that but I use tablets for creating things, not just consuming them - or for games. So a Fire was right out. I got a second iPad and gave the old one to the wife.

"They are turning into the something worse than MS"

Not true. At the peak MS was twisting existing standards to force people to buy their products. Apple is pushing forward open standards like HTML5, and gets people to buy products by building things that simply work really well.

"there's something herd like about Americans so I guess they'll bankrupt themselves buying iTV."

If anyone wants to buy an iTV because it works well for them, why not let them do so? I agree that consumer debt is a problem, so perhaps a good start is an Apple device that will wean them off expensive monthly cable bills.

The iTV will have to be aimed at the wealthy. Most of us our happy with our internet capable Panasonic/Samsung/LG screens that are cheap. I bought my 3D capable full HD screen with Netlfix and Amazon and more for 600 bucks.

Instead of buying a second iPad, I gave the one we have to my wife and I bought a kindle Fire as all i really wanted was a clean interface to buy Kindle books and watch my Amazon videos.

The iPad is too expensive and I have the money to spend but I'm not willing to keep Apple in its record surplus. They are turning into the something worse than MS. America loves monopolies but then even in NYC sheep will line up to get into a bar because everyone else is lining up to get into the bar.

there's something herd like about Americans so I guess they'll bankrupt themselves buying iTV.
And who cares about the poor anyway?

According to the New York Times, Apple Computer employs 43,000 people in the United States but contracts with over 700,000 workers abroad. It makes iPhones in China not only because of low wages there but also the ease and speed with which its Chinese contractor can mobilize their workers – from company dormitories at almost any hour of the day or night.

An Apple executive says “We don’t have an obligation to solve America’s problems. Our only obligation is making the best product possible.” He might have added “and showing a big enough profits to continually increase our share price.”

The official statement does not tell the whole story but they are not obligated to reveal corporate hiring strategies either that their competition can copy.

Fact of the matter is that the Kindle Fire is a better product for its price than the iPad is for its.
01:56 AM on 01/24/2012
Go buy it, if it's so good. Nobody thinks everyone should get what they don't want to pay for. Apple just does a superior job with the user experience and quality of the integration of hardware and software. You are right that you don't have to pay for that and can buy some other device. Many people will never know how satisfying owning Apple's products are because they think they can save a few bucks.

I own a laptop. I have no need for a tablet, nor do I need to manufacture a reason to buy an over-priced, underfunctioning piece of Apple crapola.
02:05 PM on 01/24/2012
While I wont say the Kindle Fire is better than iPad. I will say that I just bought a Fire because i wasn't going to spend $500+ on an iPad that has an upcoming refresh. I wanted to read books, surf the web, light email while not at the computer. I've got to say im pretty impressed for how much this Fire costs. Form factor is so much easier to hold with one hand while reading and watching porn(which is prob what your doing most of the time). Hey look a flash video in a web page hit play. Amazone Prime: video streaming, book lending, free apps of the day. They have done a pretty good job of making their own sandbox and theres lots of media to consume just like iOS. At the end of the day why bother buying a $5-600 iPad? Just buy an Air. $200 is not much and you wont be disappointed when something better comes. Apple only does a good job of integration if its all Apple products. iTunes on PC is a massive resource hog and a piece of crap. I like my iphone so i put up with it. As for buying Apple as a lifestlye - so dumb.

In many ways, Apple still behaves like a startup company despite now being the richest company in the world. To prove this, just dissect one number reported by the WSJ- Apple's profit PER employee in 2010 alone - $400,000.00 per employee. This number is STAGGERING probably not achievable without SMART outsourcing where Apple is already a black belt. This means not only cheap and easily scalable labor force in China but here in the US as well. It makes sense to hire US 3rd party contractors instead of adding a TRUE Apple employee because of cheap overhead. Their employees are cheap and great multipliers to Apple's profit per employee and Apple doesn't pay them raises, bonuses, health benefits, 401k plan and Apple stock options. As these 3rd party companies multiply in number here in the US, Apple will get them to compete for their business and US salaries will become cheaper and cheaper. This will be the BIG trend in the coming years for many big US-based companies (not just Apple) and will be a big reason why US tech salaries will go down further and help destroy the middle class. Apple also gets to behave like a monopoly without being one because they don't have to get into price wars like many PC companies with similar technical specs on the laptop and desktop PC so they get to keep their product prices to remain high and labor costs down and perhaps on a downward trajectory for some.

Eventually it will have no employees. It will become a 100% postmodern abstract entity.

A blogger here in Huffpo recently and accurately called it "Corporate Capitalism". Having a corporate culture of secrecy sometimes called "departmental compartmentalization" that is typical of many US tech companies like Apple can take advantage of that culture for both good and sinister reasons like trying to be as close to 100% post-modern entity or a corporation that Mitt Romney fondly calls a "Person" just to deploy stinky "creative" accounting and mitigate paying taxes. There is also plausible deniability when a company has justifiable compartmentalization. Looking at the bright side, tech companies like Apple will add thousands of high tech jobs (albeit many of them low wages) to the US economy by indirectly hiring staff through 3rd party contractors. Also, when companies like Apple decide to add a TRUE employee in their US company entitled to Apple stock options, there is already an ecosystem so they can select from the best of the 3rd party contractor pools who are not only TRAINED hard workers possibly modeled after China factory standards, but these US employees are also highly competent and most likely accustomed to being happy in getting paid low wages with little benefits by US standards. That alone is so powerful and will make "profits per employee" metrics even look better.
