Joe Paterno Dead: Text Of Family Statement On Ex-Penn State Football Coach's Death

By The Associated Press   01/22/12 10:24 AM ET   AP

-- Full text of statement by the Paterno family on the death of Joe Paterno:

It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.

He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.

He has been many things in his life – a soldier, scholar, mentor, coach, friend and father. To my mother he was and is her soul mate, and the last several weeks have shown the strength of their love. To his children and grandchildren he is a shining example of how to live a good, decent and honest life, a standard to which we aspire.

When he decided to forego a career in law and make coaching his vocation, his father Angelo had but one command: Make an impact.

As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact. That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country.

And so he leaves us with a peaceful mind, comforted by his "living legacy" of five kids, 17 grandchildren, and hundreds of young men whose lives he changed in more ways than can begin to be counted.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania or the Penn State-THON, The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

It may be forgivable, when confronted with the atrocities done by a " a colleague", that you try to make some sense of it all, and perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt. It is quite another, after the allegations, to sit idly by, when he flaunted young boys at Penn state camp and box seats at the football games.

Did none of these me have a moral conscience to say to each other that the likely hood that Sandusky was continuing having inappropriate contact with young boys, and now it is time to do something about it?

I'm surprised they didn't ask for donations to Second Mile.

The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones. Life.

Hello James F Barry; Of course, it ain't original. It's from Brutus eulogy to Caesar. Can't believe I remembered that from High School. The mind is funny. Is it not? The mind is funny. Is it not? Life.

He did think of everyone... it's true. Except for kids that one of his coaches raped in the showers at his football facility. Them... not so much.

I, for one, hope that his last moments were filled with pain and suffering.

Well i hope you Son's of Buck's are happy,,,,afterall you thought,,,, he was only a football coach,,,there has never been a coach that has prosecuted anyone for anything, that's a University decision, just like when he was dismissed, you got to see who was in control and they used the only TRUMP CARD they had,,,,an ICON served as a get out of jail free card,,,,,can't wait for the trial looking forward to seeing a NEW BOARD OF REGENTS OR TRUSTEE'S AT PSU

You're good at making excuses. Perhaps you should consider a job in an industry in which that talent is the only skill required. Ever consider running for the U.S. Congress?

To be a successful politician you're got to be a rail hopper,,,a fence jumper,,,you've got to make all the people happy,,,,that's exactly not my kinda work,,,,I'm the examine all information at hand, make a decision that i'm comfortable with and go with it, never changing my mind, which if we had politicians like that, atleast we would know who or which side to vote for,,,,,,,,take care,,,,,

He may have had a flaw, he may have had several but, he NEVER had a fatal flaw. Those who would have fatal flaws would be reserved to people that take a life, whether it be the own or someone else, hence the key word "FATAL". Joe Paterno did neither.

Yeah. He smoked. Just say no to to-bac-co!

He was neither good nor decent. Watching someone kill the spirit and future life of a child and turning your back only shows how selfish and evil he was at the core. Bury him quickly and move on... his victims should get the donations.

How did he do that? He reported here say to superiors for investigation. He admitted with hindsight he should have gone further, should have told another agency (state police). One mistake should not taint the good he did in his life, trusting that the correct people would do the correct thing. By the way he had no victims JERRY Sandusky did

Says you.

He did what he needed to do and other people ignored it.  Why are you not complaining about the actions of others who knew?

Oh, that's right, because they are not big name feetball coaches.

I hate feetball, but I am not going to blame a guy who really could have prevented nothing and only had secondhand information about the alleged cases of abuse.

This guy's name is going to be tarnished because his team won some games (I think; I know bulldink about college feetsports).  The other guy will be forgotten, but not this one.  He did nothing and will be the monster.
