Newt Gingrich: Let's Go To The Moon Permanently, Get To Mars ASAP (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/23/2012 10:43 pm Updated: 01/23/2012 11:01 pm

Space travel is an issue that will likely come in few states besides Florida this primary season, but both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich were quick to recognize the importance of the Space Coast is to this state and agreed that the issue is important for the country.

"It should certainly be a priority," said Romney when asked whether, during a time of reduced federal spending, space exploration should be a focus.

"What we have now is a president who does not have a vision or a mission for NASA. As a result of that, there are people on the space coast that are suffering. Florida itself is suffering as a result," he said.

Gingrich added that he would like to go back to the moon "permanently" and get to Mars "as rapidly as possible, building a series of space stations and developing commercial space."

Romney and Gingrich both said that space exploration should be a collaborative effort between the federal government and the private sector.

"From NASA, from the Air Force space program, from our leading universities and from commercial enterprises -- bring them together, discuss a wide range of options for NASA and then have NASA not just funded by the federal government but by commercial enterprises," Romney added. "Have research done in our universities. Let's have a collaborative effort with business, with government, with military and with our educational institutions. Have a mission."

Gingrich was then asked whether he would "put more tax dollars into the space race and commit to putting an American on mars instead of relying on the private sector."

"Well, the two are not incompatible," he replied. "For example, most of the great breakthroughs in aviation were as a result of prizes. [Charles] Lindbergh flew to Paris for a $25,000 prize. I would like to see vastly more of the money spent encouraging the private sector into a very aggressive experimentation. I would like a leaner NASA. I don't think building a bigger bureaucracy and having a greater number of people sit in rooms and talk gets you there. But if we had a series of goals that we were prepared to offer prizes for, there is every reason to believe you have folks in this country and around the world who would put up an amazing amount of money and would make the space coast literally hum with activity because they'd be drawn to achieve prizes."

I say we should send Newt to the moon and after he gets bombarded with radiation flares from the sun we can bring him back then maybe it would have somehow fixed his brain.

Missions to the Moon and Mars, while cutting Social Security and Medicare?

How about rescinding the Bush tax cuts first?

"I would like to see vastly more of the money spent encouraging the private sector into a very aggressive experimentation."

Does Newt know anything about science beyond what he sees in television and movies?

Yes, there have been some very prolific inventors and innovators like Norman Borlaug, Jerome Lemelson, Nikola Tesla, etc. However, the vast majority of scientific research and innovation is slow and can be tedious.

Simply offering prizes and incentives won't magically create a Leonardo da Vinci or an Archimedes.

The only way that the space program gets to be funded is if Newt or Mitt run up the deficit and the debt to do it. They will not be albe to cost justify cutting taxes and cutting spending and expanding the space program to the degree they say. Another news flash, universities get their money from research largely from the government. And companies are loathe to invest in research with long-term (or possibly no) payback...unless it is significantly leveraged with government funding.

Mitt and Newt - stop lying about this and playing election politics with it.

Well, no... Space is not now an issue, and space won't be an issue at any time during the election, neither primary nor general.

It's common for candidates to show up along Florida's "space coast" or in Houston and pander to a small assortment of voters and some major corporate donors by promising new horizons in space exploration. And that's what Newt and Mittens are offering.

And the moment the Florida primary is past, they'll never speak of space exploration again.

Of course, once they get elected, they will make sure that the same old interest groups and corporations that got them elected get the next chunk of tax payer money... with America going nowhere, but backwards.

We've heard it before. From Bush.

NASA already works with Universities and private sector companies to build the vehicles and satellites sent up. This is pure pandering, make it sound new but really isn't typical bs said by politicians.

Its amazing, try to get a few dollars to pay for schools or healthcare or veterans benefits and all we hear about is the deficit but when it comes to the military industrial complex (essentially the same people who make weapons also make our space vehicles) its never an issue.

I gathered from the article that both Romney and Gingrich were talking about a reorganization of NASA, not increased taxes to fund them. Anyway, it's just political pandering right now. I'll believe them when I see an actual plan, not just off-the-cuff comments.

I am a HUGE supporter of space exploration and believe that we are spending a fraction of what we should in this highly productive field but... it is SO obvious that Newt and Mitt are pandering to those who work (or up til recently, worked) for the space industry in Florida. But I do have one question for these guys: Where are the 100s of billions of dollars over the next decade-plus going to come from to pay for these projects? The candidates are constantly going on about our huge deficit and the need to cut spending (while at the same time cutting taxes for the supposed "job creators"). Where's the money suppose to come from to pay for these expensive projects?

Divert it from the Air Force's space budget which has always been bigger than NASA's.
