San Francisco 49ers Miss Chance At Super Bowl After Kyle Williams Fumble (VIDEO)

JOSH DUBOW   01/22/12 11:29 PM ET   AP

SAN FRANCISCO — Kyle Williams put his hands on his helmet and dropped his head in disgust. A second big mistake by its backup punt returner did in San Francisco at the worst possible time.

Williams fumbled in overtime to set up Lawrence Tynes' 31-yard field goal, and the 49ers lost the NFC championship game to the New York Giants 20-17 on Sunday.

Williams, returning kicks in place of the injured Ted Ginn Jr., muffed one punt early in the fourth quarter to set up a go-ahead touchdown for New York, then was stripped by Jacquian Williams in overtime to give the Giants the ball at the 24.

After three runs and a kneeldown, Tynes kicked the game-winner, and Williams slowly made a dejected walk back to the locker room as the 49ers missed out on a prime chance to go to the Super Bowl.

"It will be a tough one," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "It will take a while to get over."

The fact that turnovers did in San Francisco was truly surprising. The 49ers tied an NFL record with just 10 giveaways all season – including none on special teams – and had a plus-28 turnover margin in the regular season. They took advantage of five New Orleans turnovers to win 36-32 last week but were on the wrong end in this game because of Williams.

Williams, the son of Chicago White Sox general manager Ken Williams, did not look smooth fielding punts after doing it just twice in the regular season.

He made a dangerous, sliding catch on one return and called a fair catch on another with room to run. He then made his first big miscue after San Francisco forced a punt early in the fourth quarter while protecting a 14-10 lead.

Steve Weatherford hit a short, bouncing punt that Williams came up to try to field. He backed away at the last minute, but the ball glanced off his right knee and was recovered by Devin Thomas at the San Francisco 29. The play was originally not ruled a fumble but was overturned by instant replay.

Six plays later, Eli Manning threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham, who beat backup cornerback Tramaine Brock on third-and-15. Brock was playing in place of starter Tarell Brown, who left late in the third quarter after a violent collision with teammate Dashon Goldson.

Williams helped atone for his miscue when he returned the kickoff 40 yards to help set up David Akers' tying field goal late in regulation.

But on his second return in overtime, Williams gave the ball away again. He fielded the punt at the 19 and was stripped by Jacquian Williams. Thomas once again pounced on the ball at the 24, setting up the Giants' winning kick and ending San Francisco's most successful season in years.

Harbaugh got the Niners to the brink of the Super Bowl in his first season, taking over a 6-10 team and going 13-3 to win the NFC West. The ability to protect the ball and cause turnovers was the biggest reason for the turnaround.

But the Niners forced no turnovers by the Giants and were done in by Williams' costly giveaways.

The Niners really did miss Ginn, who injured his right knee in last week's thrilling 36-32 win over New Orleans. San Francisco was already thin at receiver after releasing Braylon Edwards late in the regular season and was unable to get anything out of its wideouts this game.

San Francisco's wide receivers had just one catch all game – a 3-yarder by Michael Crabtree on a third-and-5 play before Akers' tying field goal with 5:39 left in regulation.

The bulk of San Francisco's offense came on two big passes from Alex Smith to Vernon Davis. They connected on a 73-yarder to open the scoring in the first quarter and a 28-yarder to take a 14-10 lead in the third.

That wasn't quite enough on this day. So now instead of the 49ers coach taking on his brother, John, in the "Superbaugh" in Indianapolis in two weeks, the Harbaughs will be watching the big game in part because of special teams.

John's Ravens fell earlier in the day to New England 23-20 when Billy Cundiff pushed a 32-yard field goal attempt wide left in the closing seconds of the AFC title game.

It was not meant for the 49ers to win. Somebody had to be the goat. Unfortunately it was Kyle Williams.

What's with all the hostility, Kyle Williams was the best player on the Giants team!!

Thank you Kyle "Big Knee" Williams!
Go Giants!

Yeah, thank him, because if he didn't choke, 49ers would have won. What's it like, by the way, having the East Coast Sports Network, ESPN, thinking the world stops on the other side of he Hudson?

There are not many wins when teams don't convert on third down. It was the only game this season where a team converted ony 1 third down. And btw, third dfown efficiency is the money down in the NFL. It keeps drives alive and eats clock. Bottom line, rethink the end of your fisrt sentence.

The Giants hardly proved they were better than the Niners. Those ten points were gimmes.

Isn't that the way the Niners won last week?

Uh. No. They didn't score off turnovers. They came back on the Saints when everybody in the stadium and everybody at home thought it was over. The Giants got the ball on both occasions well inside their opponents side of the 50. They would never have driven the length of the field on the Niners.

Smith played fairly well. Two long throws for touchdown. Williams lost this game. I'd have had Gore or Hunter back there returning punts. It's too bad Ginn wasn't healthy. The Giants were lucky. The refs did all they could to help them win. That was a fumble late in the game by the Giants back, and a quick whistle. And twice 49er defensive backs ran into each other, knocking sure interceptions out of their own hands.

The Giants lucked out.
09:40 PM on 01/23/2012
Lucked out? What game did you watch? The Niners were horrible on third-dowm conversions, while the Giants had 36 min time of possesseion, and 92 plays to 57. Doesn't sound like luck to me. The better, more determined, most prepared team won the game. Much like they've been doing the last 5 weeks.”

Having watched, I lay the loss upon the shoulders of QB Smith, long prior to this particular fumble. Smith's play was atrocious thoughout the game, totally lacking in poise and judgement. This fumble lost the game in the end, but only because Smith had failed time after time to get the ball to his receivers, throwing into the ground, very long, simply missing, etc., and gain a first on third down. Completing a couple passes to Davis not not a game make. I like Smith, but the 49ers need a QB. This article reads as if the author did not actually watch the entire game.

The line could have been blocking a bit better, giving him more time. I thought he ran a few Tebow-type option plays well, and perhaps the 49ers should have tried a few more of those plays. Williams lost this game; he couldn't handle the pressure emotionally.

I don't think coolfireone actually watched the game. Five minutes of highlights and everybody's an expert. Gotta love it...

QB Smith scored exactly as many points as QB Manning. How did Smith "lose" the game when the opposing QB scored the exact same amount of points? Please, enlighten me...

* The 49ers need some real receivers.
* Crabtree was not getting open and in general, had an uninspired game.
* Smith's judgement in the game is why he didn't have any interceptions, and without Williams' mistakes, could have had a chance to win the game before OT.
*If you actually watch the game (I'm assuming you didn't), you would have mentioned Alex's running, which was pretty brilliant.

I'm sure the game will be replayed on NFL network. Try to watch it. Reading an article about it isn't enough...

Of course it's easy to critique something after the fact, but WHY did the 49ers keep Kyle Williams in the game after his first flub? If this were a regular season game, fine, but a game that determines who goes to the Super Bowl is NOT! The Niners should have had someone, ANYONE fielding punts/kicks other than Williams. The NFL playoffs is the story of Big Plays--and chokers. With what was at stake, the 49ers should have had Vernon Davis out on the field handling kick return duty.

I'd have benched him. He was choking big time. He muffed that first quarter reverse.

Was that him, too? I thought that was a boneheaded call. He should not have been back there after the first fumble.

In an otherwise superb coaching exhibition, Harbaugh made two big mistakes this season: getting Josh Morgan's leg broken, and keeping Kyle Williams in the game after the first fumble.

You've got to feel sorry for the kid. He's not even the team's regular punt returner. If he had turned it over just once perhaps that would be forgivable. But twice unfortunately makes him the clear cut goat of the game.

If I'm Kyle Williams I'm calling my realtor today, I wouldn't wanna hang around town long enough for some deranged fan to spot me.

Well, in 1958, Vince Lombardi saw to it that Don Maynard got cut from the Giants after fumbling a punt in a late season game.
