'Sorority Girls': TLC's New Show Brings Greek Life To The UK

Greek life never really caught on in the UK. That is, until TLC premieres its new reality series, "Sorority Girls," which features five girls -- Hannah, Arianna, Dominique, Devan and Amelia -- on a mission to establish Britain’s first ever sorority, Sigma Gamma.

The show will follow these five American sorority girls as they pack up their lives and head to Leeds to bring their Greek Life traditions of exclusivity and glamour to the UK.

Over eight grueling weeks, the girls recruit pledges to see if they have what it takes to go Greek. But of course, what's a show about "Sorority Girls" without a bit of transatlantic drama? Each pledge will be competing for one of five coveted spots -- and it won't be easy.

The girls will be monitored 24/7 and will experience all aspects of pledging, including rush week, door chants, secret handshakes and night rituals. In the end, only five girls will be able to call themselves Sigma Gamma sisters and be a part of Britain's first ever sorority.

Hopefully, TLC's "Sorority Girls" brings back the greatness that was MTV's "Sorority Life."

"Sorority Girls" premieres Tues., Jan. 31 at 9 p.m. EST on TLC.

This article is obviously not up on the lingo. They are not pledges anymore. They are "new members," and it's not RUSH. It's "recruitment. Also, most "sororities" are not actually sororities at all. They are women's fraternities. Get it right if you're trying to spread the trend and educate!

Too bad this show doesn't get it right at all. They actually use the terms "rush" and "pledge" and reinforce every single stereotype about sorority life. Your statement about sororities not actually being sororities is somewhat false since a lot of these organizations are "sororities" and some are "women's fraternities." Your comment was irrelevant.

I think this brilliant! Also that would be dumb to have British girls set up an American custom. So excited to watch this! And it totes is not a rip off of Sorority Life, that show was dumb and about a non Panhellenic sorority. I searched and the five American girls are all Panhellenic sororities!!!

These five girls can't be in a Panhellenic sorority! Being Greek I know that their national sorority would never let these girls go over seas and take part in this mockery! It would be a PR nightmare! Where did you read that they are part of a Panhellenic sorority?? Post the link. I want to see it! Just on the surface...If they were in a Panhellenic sorority, they would not be using the words rush, and pledge. Those terms are words of the past. Alot of other things that they did and or doing are against Panhellenic rules and standards!!

This is an interesting spin. I'm not sure why there are American girls attempting to set up Greek life overseas- the network should've found local girls in Britain with an interest in joining/establishing a sorority at their university. Would've made more sense.

To be honest though, nothing good can really come from a show like this. I have nothing against these girls, I just know that people can change in front of a camera, especially one that is recording you for a(n) national/international audience. All we're going to see is the stereotypical things you would expect of sorority girls. As someone part of the Greek system at my university, it's already hard enough to dispel the stereotypes surrounding Greeks. This show won't help matters any.

Why do they think they can rip off Sorority Life without repercussions ?

"Greek" is the term used to describe the sorority/fraternity system in the US because the houses are named using the Greek alphabet. It has nothing to do with actual Greece.
