Americans To Consume 1.25 Billion Chicken Wings During Super Bowl, 25 Billion For All Of 2012

First Posted: 01/24/2012 9:03 am Updated: 01/24/2012 11:18 am

On Super Bowl weekend, Americans are expected to eat 1.25 billion chicken wings -- that's 100 million pounds -- according to a new report by the National Chicken Council. If the wings were laid end-to-end, they would circle the circumference of the Earth more than twice, which is about a quarter of the way to the moon. Super Bowl Sunday is the most popular day for wing-eating for the whole year; 25 billion wings are projected to be eaten in 2012 and five percent of those will likely be consumed on February 5. Wing consumption on Super Bowl Sunday is three times higher than on any other Sunday in the year.

It isn't just wings that are popular during the Super Bowl. Amazingly, they represent only an eighth of Sunday's total expected chicken consumption, explained Harry Balzer, chief food and beverage industry analyst and vice president of The NPD Group, in a press release emailed to The Huffington Post.

Chickens have two wings (the "drumette" and the "flat"), and three joints. While the meatier first and second joints are sold domestically, the thin third joint known as the "flapper" is often exported to Asian countries. Similar things happen to other parts of the chicken. Dark meat is often exported abroad since Americans are so enthusiastic about chicken breasts.

The supply of wings is limited by the amount of chickens. Thus, if the demand for wings is higher than the demand for other parts of the chicken, wing costs go up. According to the National Chicken Council, wing prices always go up during the fourth quarter of the year as restaurants start to stock up for the Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, prices usually peak in January.

Buffalo wings are actually a fairly new culinary creation; they were first served at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York in 1964, though there are several different stories about how precisely they came to be. Regardless, in half a century wings have gone from a regional specialty to the unofficial national bar food of America.

I keep hearing this 1.25 billion wings number but is this reasonable? The viewership for the Super Bowl is about 100 million. Now obviously even non-watchers eat wings on Super Bowl Sunday but ignoring that for the time being that's over 12 wings per person, averaged over everyone including those who are having pizza, or burgers, or steak, or are vegetarians, or just chips dip and beer.I suspect that the number is a little high.

Anyone else here sick to death of the holier-than-thou vegans and vegetarians that stalk these boards? I know I am. I'm going to pull some wings out of the freezer right now and we'll have those tonight.

I'll ignore the comments about slaughtering chickens and just say that I love chicken wings. For a change up from the same old, same old here are some very tasty sounding recipes for chicken wings. I will be trying the Maple-Glazed Bourbon one!

My husband and I raise and butcher at least 90% of the meat. Chicken wings are something we eat a few times a year because it takes 50 chickens for 100 chicken wings. I don't think a lot of people realize how many animals it takes for that plate of wings. We get 100 wings per year when just raising chicken for ourselves so I guess that translates to 5 really large chicken wing dinners per year. I never order things like that the few times per year we eat out.

body members of tortured animals is not food.how many of you have ever visited a slaughterhouse or met a chicken? animal protein is acidic and not healthy for the human body.

absolutely none of it is justifiable.it has been proven that eating meat and animal products is nothing more than a habit and a preference on top of being harmful for human health and the environment and causing starvation in poor countries because of wasted resurces so to justify killing any animal for food is no different than killing a cat or a dog for fun.

Wings cost as much as breast these days. To me, the only way wings taste good is grilled. I have tried several oven recipes which didn't fly.

Conclusion....better left to the professionals if you want good wings.

Question: Would we be able to support such large consumption without 6 week broilers ?

Commercial indoor broilers are sickening. Chickens are born and die never having seen the light of day and have a high rate of leg deformities because the large breast muscles causes distortions of the developing legs and pelvis. These birds can't even support their own body weight ! Because they can't move easily, these chickens are not able to avoid heat, cold or dirt as they would in natural conditions. The added weight and overcrowding also puts a strain on their hearts and lungs and Ascites can develop. In the UK alone, up to 19 million broilers die in their sheds from heart failure each year... And that's what we're eating, sad, sick, deformed speed bred chickens. No thankyou.

Free-running farm chickens take almost twice as long to reach their slaughter weight but live active, happy lives. Factory broilers are the main reason my wife and I are starting a chicken coop. That and those delicious dark yolks you get from happy egg laying hens :P

Do you want to eat chickens who have feasted on antibiotic laced foods or drink ? I know I don't.

For some reason the first thing that jumped in my mind was "How about four breasted chickens?" which of course brought back to memory the three breasted chick from total recall.

I'm thinking chickens that self-produce wing sauce and have blue cheese skin!! We probably have the technology already, but the hot sauce and blue cheese lobbies have a lot of money invested in keeping it a secret.

Sadly, most people don't give a rats as@ about these poor chickens.
03:11 PM on 01/24/2012
I don't even like chicken wings. I'm a breast and leg man myself. yeah, I know, I know . . . ; )

Do you have any idea how many poor innocent hops were k.illed so that you could enjoy that beer? Have you ever met a hops plant? Really gotten to know one? Drinking beer is no different than killing a broccoli or a cauliflower for fun.

That's absurd, but expected. When I still ate meat I ate wings practically every Sunday during football season. This Superbowl I think I'm just going to make pizza from scratch. Maybe some hummus or spinach artichoke dip.
