Demián Bichir: Mexican Actor Nominated For An Academy Award For Best Actor In 'A Better Life' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   Cindy Y. Rodriguez First Posted: 01/24/2012 6:52 pm Updated: 01/25/2012 3:15 pm

Mexican actor Demian Bichir, who was nominated Tuesday morning for an Oscar in the Best Actor category for his role as a Mexican day laborer in the film "A Better Life," has dedicated his nomination to the millions of undocumented immigrants in the nation.

The drama portrays the life of an undocumented gardener, Carlos Gallindo, in East L.A. The gardener struggles to keep his teenage son on the straight-and-narrow and give him a chance at "a better life" after his wife abandoned the two of them after crossing the border into the United States.

"A Better Life" is rather timely given the contentious national debate over immigration.

Bichir's nomination also comes at a time when people around the country are protesting controversial immigration laws, such as Alabama's HB56 and Arizona's SB1070.

Bichir’s portrayal of a Mexican day laborer brings the struggle of the "undocumented immigrant" to life. On Tuesday, Bichir issued a statement dedicating the nomination to the undocumented: "I dedicate this nomination to those eleven million human beings who make our lives easier and better in the U.S."

In an interview with Fox News Latino, Bichir said, "This issue [of immigration] is close to many of us... We are all immigrants and America was based on immigrants. But this film is not just an immigration movie." Above all, the film captures a father's unwavering love for his son.

“I'm overwhelmed for having my name among those incredible actors. This could have never happened if Chris Weitz had not been the head of this film. He is my brother and I thank him deeply,” Bichir said in a statement.

While Bichir may be a household name in the U.S. yet, the Mexican star has been acting since he was 14. He has played Esteban Reyes, the fictional mayor of Tijuana and husband of Mary-Louise Parker’s character in Weeds. Bichir also played two famous Latin American revolutionaries: Fidel Castro in Che: Part One and Che: Part Two and Emiliano Zapata in Zapata: Amor en Rebeldia, according to Time.com.

If nothing else, Bichir hopes the buzz surrounding his Oscar nomination will encourage people to see the film.

"Hopefully more and more people will jump into iTunes and Netflix to see our film. That will be the biggest reward we could get," said Bichir.

In the category for Best Actor, Bichir is up against George Clooney in "The Descendants", Jean Dujardin in "The Artist", Gary Oldman in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and Brad Pitt in "Moneyball".

According to the L.A. Times, Bichir is one of only a handful of Mexican actors and actresses to have scored Oscar nominations, including Anthony Quinn for "Wild is the Wind" (1957) and "Zorba the Greek" (1964) and Salma Hayek for Julie Taymor's 2002 bio-pic "Frida" about painter Frida Kahlo.

The first Hispanic actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor was Puerto Rican Jose Ferrer in 1950 for his protrayal of Cryano de Bergerac.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards will air February 26 at 7 p.m. EST on ABC.

Damien excellent role as Fidel Castro in Che, was not seen in national theathers in Mexico. Why? Because of its context. Revolution against being oppresed. The theme is to dangerous to for Mexico I guess. His best role was not seen by most Mexicans, or even know it exsits. Thats how free it isnt here in Mexico. Throw in the violence, thanks to USA money for arms on both sides. Poverty induces by politics that favor a USA bent. The USA backs illegal elections in Mexico, like the one in 2006. The USA meddles in Mexico, thats why its so messed up in Mexico. And a good movie like Che, is not allowed to be seen by the masses. Next time u see a Mexican who is undocumented, think that its your owns countrys fault that they are their.

I take issue with the interchangeable use of the words immigrant and illegal immigrant. One is not a problem 99% of Americans care about. The other is a highly complicated situation that is not all positives with no negatives.

Sadly, A Better Life was not a better movie. It kept trying to end then not ending. It took away the climax. Bichir is an actor whose work I really enjoy and he did a great job with this flick. Too bad it was it did not have better structure.

who ever wrote this article forgot to include the Mexican actress Adriana Barraza who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for the movie Babel.

Perhaps because the article is about Bichir's Oscar nominated movie, A Better Life.

But several other Hispanic actors who have been nominated were mentioned. That is why ANOTHER person as well as I are mentioning it; Ms. Barraza's nomination is for a movie released in 2006, and the author of this piece dug far back enough to reach José Ferrer's win in 1950, but didn't mention something that happened a mere few years ago.

Is this what you base your "are you posting under two names?" argument? That two different people noticed the same thing?

I rented both " A better life" and "Moneyball" the other night. I have the say that " A better life " was amazing and brought me to tears. It was so much better than " Moneyball" and I recommended it to all my friends! The story is so real and is indeed an eye opener to the hardships that immigrants have to face in " the land of the free". It's upsetting that people are so judgemental and ignorant to these people, when everyone in this country(with the exception of native americans..which i am) are all immigrants and decendants of immigrants.
11:47 PM on 01/25/2012
This is true but we are not all illegal immigrants. It is a situation that needs addressing but neither government is willing to effect any real change. It is heart breaking and infuriating to live in LA, cheek and jowl with the largest community of Mexicans living outside Mexico in the world. The complexities of human life can never be summed up in sound bytes. It's are never black and white.
09:49 AM on 01/26/2012
There's actually no legal term "illegal immigrant." People can be out of status or undocumented, but "illegal" is not a term recognized by courts. It's a sensational term used to incite violent rhetoric. I also don't think this film is a "sound byte." It IS an attempt to share ONE human story and create empathy to begin to find solutions that don't turn human beings into sound bytes like "illegal immigrant."
11:06 AM on 01/27/2012
You might want to reword immigrant to illegal immigrant. I am a decendant of legal immigrants. You disrespect all legal immigrants when you lump criminals in with them.

The scene in the limo where he turned Mary Louise Parker over his knee and spanked her was the best of the season! I was highly disappointed when they killed him off in prison. Lame. Very lame.

This is a beautiful story. Unless you are a native american, all of us our immigrants in this country. Some legally. Some illegally. During WWII many Jews migrated to the USA under illegal pretenses to escape Nazi Germany with the help of others. Many people who enter illegally become productive tax paying citizens and escape intolerable poverty and suffering. Yes, there are also criminals who migrate but most of the people who come here just want a chance for a decent future and a better life. Bravo to Demian Bichir.

About 12% of Americans are foreign-born immigrants. The other 88% of Americans are native-born citizens and are not immigrants.

I'm sorry, I do not know what type of person you are in the habit of interacting with, but I do not find it necessary to use two different names to express my opinion.

What seems lame to me is that you would think ONE person couldn't support mentioning Ms. Barraza's performance by making an eloquent, well-thought out argument about it. You are implying that I had to come up with a fake identity to make my opinion seem more valid or that I am dishonest enough to want to drum up support for then notion that Ms. Barraza deserved mention by utilizing the same device.

Either way, you called me "lame" and implied a lack of honesty that I do not appreciate.

...yeah, and so easy to do that from an elite, privileged background while the majority of the country lives in abject poverty...real great and even noble, i bet.

Hey, he could have said nothing and run with the pack. He's putting his career on the line, I think.

I'm not an undocumented immigrant, so I don't see his actions from that point of view. I was "lucky enough" to be the grandchild of people who immigrated from Poland about 100 years ago. I don't know what the immigration laws were then, but my grandparents survived the discrimination then, which probably wasn't any more fair than what is going on now.

I hope that the undocumented today have their chance to become legal in this country, because they do jobs at below-minimum wage that American citizens think are below them. These people are in similar situations to the Irish, Poles, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, etc., who have come here and been treated with disdain, discriminated against, threatened, killed, unfairly blamed for economic bad times and then have risen above all the hatred to show that they--at least as much as descendents of the white settlers from Europe--contribute to the achievement of the stated goals of this country.

If Mr. Bichir is really that interested in the plight of the Mexican illegal alien in the US, he should go back to Mexico and fight to change the economic and social inequities there. Mexico is filled with corruption, economic injustice, and machismo. I'm sure he can find plenty of things to pontificate about over there. If I'm not mistaken he did a movie many years ago called El jardin del Eden, which was also about Mexican illegal aliens. I believe it was done in Mexico. I don't recall seeing him dedicate anything to Mexicans then.

I think that foreign nationals like him that come here to advance themselves and their careers and then use whatever success they've earned to advocate policies that are not in the best interests of the US to be disgusting opportunists. I don't care how good of an actor, he should go home and work on improving Mexico.

Look in the mirror when u complain. Because thats who voted in the slobs who meddle in Mexico, and other latin countries, so their corrupt, so theirs a war on drugs, so their is a ruling class that is backed up by the USA, no matter how corrupt or violent they are.
Whenever their is a Fidel, or a Hugo, watch how those slobs u vote in fall over each other to condem them. Only because they want to make things better for all of their people, not just the rich. So dont complain, if theirs is Mexicans running around your house, its your own fault.

Felicidades Sr. Bichir. This is a fabulous film to anyone interested, One of the few films out there that deals with this issue honestly and which focuses on the human aspects. His performance is worthy of a nomination.
