Gary Johnson, Former New Mexico Governor, On Why He's Gay Voters' Best Presidential Choice

Gary Johnson

Posted: 01/24/2012 10:42 am

Former New Mexico GOP Gov. Gary Johnson says he’s the best presidential choice for gay voters -- better than even President Obama -- calling Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney "out of touch." He’s also escalating his attacks on Newt Gingrich for having backed a bill in 1996 that would execute marijuana users, asking pointedly, "Am I to be put to death?"

Currently seeking the Libertarian Party nomination, Johnson dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination back in December, after appearing in two of the televised national debates in 2011. He came out for marriage equality in the fall, after first supporting civil unions.

"The ACLU came out with a report card a couple of weeks ago and gave all the presidential candidates a grade," Johnson said on my radio program on SiriusXM OutQ, in response to a question about whom LGBT Republicans, libertarians and dissatisfied Democrats should vote. President Obama was in third place. Ron Paul was in second place, and the best grade went to Gary Johnson.

"Most Americans are fiscally conservative and socially liberal," he said. "I'm advocating a balanced budget. But along with that, look, there should be gay marriage equality, a woman should have the right to choose, let's not build a fence across the border. Let's legalize marijuana."

On gay and lesbian relationships, Johnson says, "I started off with support for civil unions" for everyone, straight and gay, and getting the government "out of the marriage business." But he changed his mind and supported marriage equality when he realized "you'd have go through every line in federal law and omit every line where marriage appeared as opposed to just endorsing gay marriage."

Johnson excoriated Gingrich, who won the South Carolina primary last Saturday.

"In 1996, he proposed the death penalty for possession of two ounces or more of marijuana with the intent to distribute it in the United States," he said, pointing to Gingrich's bill, the Drug Importation Death Penalty Act of 1996. "I am one of the 100 million Americans who've smoked pot and, under the wrong set of circumstances, am I put to death? I hope not. And Newt Gingrich, someone who has admitted to smoking marijuana himself, also, said, and, I'm paraphrasing now, 'When I spoked marijuana it was just illegal and it was cool, but now it's illegal and it's immoral. If we just put 30 people to death under this law, well, we'll dry up marijuana in the country.' Newt Gingrich and his big ideas. Is this a big idea?"

Johnson's hope is to get the Libertarian Party nomination and be on all 50 state ballots. If he wins the nomination, he says, and if he polls at 15 percent or above, he’ll be able to participate in the general election presidential debates.

Be honest Gary. You "changed your mind" about gay marriage because you left the GOP and are now seeking the Libertarian Party ticket.

It is time for a REAL change. I think that Gary Johnson can win in 2012 if everyone who said that he is great but will just vote for him.

As a lesbian I appreciate Gary Johnsons liberated stance on gay issues. Gay rights are important but not in a vacuum. Gary Johnson's other views also impress me particularly balancing the budget, cutting government bureaucracy and generally limiting the intrusion into peoples lives. The flat tax concept is particularly appealing. Gary Johnson has my support.

Gary Johnson really has a shot here. For the first time in history, we are presented with candidates from the two leading parties that NOBODY likes. We must vote for Johnson. He is the ONLY one making any sense!
02:16 PM on 01/30/2012
I can't believe how many posts I'm seeing that say something to the effect of, "I like his ideas, but I won't vote for him because he can never win." It's a Catch-22 people! The only reason he can't win is because people won't vote for him because they don't think he can win. Flip the script! If we want change, we have to have the courage to make it happen. There have also been several posts about how people intend to vote for Obama because the GOP candidates would undo so much of the work the LGBT community has worked for, despite the fact that Obama has done NOTHING for the LGBT community himself. How about voting for a candidate that WILL? Gary Johnson is the ONLY candidate who supports marriage equality. The ONLY one. If you want to make some progress, vote for the candidate who supports progress.

Johnson is the only candidate I know of who has weekly online town hall meetings where you can talk to him and ask him anything you want. He's doing one tonight at 8pm EST. I highly recommend getting on and finding out more about him. Just visit his website, garyjohnson2012.com to join the discussion.

Gary Johnson stock on intrade is 3 cents a share, if he becomes President the shares will be worth $10 a share. That makes him over a 300 to one shot. I like those odds and will be buying shares and voting for Gary Johnson. Isn't free enterprise great.

If your only concern is gay marriage, then vote for him. If you think every other issue is important, vote for someone else.

Gary Johnson is a principled and pragmatic leader, his positions on a lot of issues make a lot of sense.

If you have not done so already, please go to to his website

number one reason to *not* vote for him: viability
05:50 AM on 01/26/2012
It's time to dump the 'viability' rationalizing.

Gary Johnson was a popular and successful two term Governor. Gary Johnson is the best person and has the best policies for the job - by far.

There is an alternative to same corrupt, stale Republican-Democratic-Corporate Political Complex.

I just wonder why someone would vote for someone that has no chance at winning just to prove a point. The community is at a very crucial point in our struggle where we are finally gaining recognition for our relationships and where we can serve openly and honorably. I'm afraid that if we "shoot" ourselves in the foot just to say that you weren't there more often we could stand to lose all the gains we've gotten. I shudder to think what a GOP President would do. I know one thing: Say good bye to the repeal as DADT would be reinstated rather quickly.
05:43 AM on 01/26/2012
Voting for Gary Johnson is not about 'proving a point'. Voting for Gary Johnson is about voting for the BEST candidate with the highest integrity and best policies.

The two major parties offer the same s**t sandwich - one party offers it on white bread the other on whole wheat - but it's still a s**t sandwich. It's time for something better.
12:08 PM on 01/27/2012
He has a very good chance of winning. Gary Johnson will get votes from both parties. 70% of the voters in a gallop poll said the would consider a third party candidate. Gary only needs 1/3erd from both parties in the top 11 states to win this election. The two main parties are like Coke and Pepsi whereas Gary Johnson's Libertarian party is like spring water, this country needs the spring water at this time. We did it your way for years and look where it got us.

Too bad no one else would vote for him. First time I hear about him. Maybe he should run for something he has a chance of wining and try and make a difference there, the more gay friendly people in government the better.
05:39 AM on 01/26/2012
If his policies are so much better than the other candidates, why wouldn't people vote for him?

Gary Johnson was a popular and successful two-term Republican Governor that governed as a moderate libertarian in a 2:1 Democratic state. He cut taxes balanced the state budget and was re-elected by wider margin than his first run. He was term limited out. If you're already a two term Governor what else do you run for?

People wouldn't vote for him because he is not out there campaigning, I have to be honest and say this is the first I hear of him. I think most people vote for the candidate they feel has the best policies, but also the candidate that has the best chance of wining. Its like you might really love candidate A, you don't care to much for candidate B, but you hate candidate C. You wish candidate A would win, but polls and the media show that the running is truly between B and C, so you vote for B so that C won't get elected. Sorry, I guess that might sound confusing, what I am trying to say is that people want their vote to count and that sometimes you have to vote for less of two evils.
It would be really cool if you could vote for the candidate you like the best and if that person doesn't get the most or the second most votes, then they would let you and other voters who didn't vote for those two people vote again to decide which one of the two gets to be president. It would be interesting to see if more people would vote for green party candidates and independents, and so on.

He sounds like a very nice person. Two words, however: Name recognition.
01:28 AM on 01/27/2012
Gary Johnson probably has about same name recognition as Bill Clinton had in late 1991. Bill did OK.

There are parts to GJ's policy stances which I like BUT, not enough to freely vote for him. When I hold him versus Obama they are about equal. Gary is all about letting business bend the people over...just like BO.
01:31 AM on 01/27/2012
Obama is just another cog in Democratic-Republican-Corporate-Political Complex. Gary Johnson would NEVER bail out banks and corporations like Bush and Obama.
12:06 AM on 01/28/2012
Gary is about letting businesses sort things out with their customers, and not having the Government meddle in everything. Right now businesses sort things out with the Government first, customers second.

Given President Obama's abuse of the gay community and his continued hate toward us vis a vis his stance on gay marriage, who else can a gay person vote for?

The Democrats take our money and our votes for granted. It will do them good to lose this election.
03:17 AM on 01/25/2012
You would prefer Democrats lose this election and sacrifice the progress the LGBT community has made and risk this country degenerating centuries because of your principles? Because Obama hasn't dropped everything for the LGBT community? Claiming Obama "hates" the gay community must be hyperbole on your part. I'm a realist and I know Obama's stance on gay marriage is simply a political one--and for good reason. And I'm willing to look past if it means keeping the rest of these lunatics out of the White House. You can't honestly say you think a Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum would do a better job of supporting gay rights than Obama...

The most important thing about this election is SCOTUS nominations. There is the real possibility that there will be more retiring Justices in the next four years. Someone needs to nominate them and what type of candidates do you think a GOP president would nominate? In the long run you are doing nothing but hurt the rest of gay community and future generations, not to mention yourself, because of your principles.

Any of the GOP who might be elected will do exactly zero on gay rights, and exactly zero against gay rights - pretty much the same as Obama has done.

The politicians want you afraid - it gets you to the polls and gets you to write checks.

Until the 2010 elections, I was a "limit out" donor to the DNC and several of their candidates, including Barack Obama.

I won't vote for any candidate that has any anti-gay rhetoric. I probably would have felt the way you do, and voted for Obama and funded him - but the list of insults is far too long.

1) He burned through millions of dollars of hard raised money fighting for DADT in court.
2) He burned through millions of hard raised dollars fighting for DOMA in court, only to drop it later.
3) He had Rick Warren at his inauguration, and hasn't apologized yet for it. Rick Warren was not only a vocal proponent for Prop 8, but he and his church raised millions to support it.
4) Not a single gay person on the cabinet, despite the tens of millions of dollars donated to his campaign by gay donors.
5) Not one legislative accomplishment for gay rights.
6) Eric Holder is still his AG - even after publishing the most homophobic document in the history of the DOJ - in it, he compares gay people to animals, and gay marriage to incest and beastiality.

Sorry - my self-respect is just

The sky didn't fall with Bush Jr.

There is an old saying in politics - "Happy people don't vote."

They want you afraid or angry. Science shows that when we're afraid or angry, it shuts down the analytical parts of our brain.

Fear and anger get you to the polls and get you to write checks.

I refuse to respond to it. I will write checks to them when they start producing results.
