'Self Deportation': Exploring Mitt Romney's Odd New Phrase (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/24/2012 3:49 pm Updated: 01/26/2012 10:23 am

Last night, Mitt Romney stepped up to fill a non-existent void in the English language, using a new phrase we can’t get enough of: ā€œself-deportation.ā€

By taking the word ā€œdeportationā€, which connotes a forced dismissal, and tacking on the prefix ā€œself,ā€ Romney came up with a little term that seemingly contradicts itself. An oxymoron, if you will.

Responding to a question regarding illegal immigration, Romney offered up this answer:

ā€œWell, the answer is self-deportation, which is people decide they can do better by going home because they can’t find work here because they don’t have legal documentation to allow them to work here."

The audience giggled as soon as the candidate uttered the foreign phrase and Romney’s explanation left many scratching their heads. The candidate advocates making life hard enough for undocumented immigrants that they make the choice to return home.

Our understanding of the word ā€œdeportation,ā€ however, is that the immigrant doesn’t quite have a choice in the matter. And making life hard for immigrants doesn't quite seem to be a new idea (see: Arizona's controversial SB 1070 immigration law, Alabama's HB 56, etc.)

Because to deport oneself would not be deportation at all, it seems maybe the word Romney was looking for was ā€œto emigrateā€, ā€œto returnā€, or ā€œto leaveā€. But Romney’s not messing with those fancy dictionary words.

Latino blogger Lili Gil wrote that the term displays the candidate is ā€œout of touchā€ with Latino voters.

"Immediately, a flood of live tweets from viewers, political insiders and Latino influencers jumped to criticize his confusing answer," Gil wrote in a column for Fox News Latino.

While some criticize the new phrase, it certainly opens up a whole new set of possibilities in our lexicon.

Swapping ā€œself-deportationā€ in the place of ā€œchoosing to leaveā€ (which it seems to actually mean) one could say:

"This bar is lame. Let's self deport.ā€ Or, ā€œThe GOP’s anti-immigrant rhetoric may prompt Latinos to self-deport from the party.ā€

A new Twitter account even sprung up after the debate. The user, @Self_deporter, asks his followers what kind of protocol is necessary in "self-deportation."

"Do you need a passport to self-deport? Still new to this... #FingersCrossed #Romney," the user tweeted.

@Self_deporter's tweets open a host of questions about how "self-deportation" might work. Will there be self-detention centers where undocumented immigrants will be self detained until they're ready to self deport? We're not sure yet.

Born in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, Romney's own father chose to move to the U.S. We wonder if, in fact, he "self-deported" to America with the hopes that his son might have greater opportunities than he did. Heck, maybe his son would even run for President someday.

  • Bobby Fischer

The onetime world chess champion Bobby Fischer was quick to self-deport himself before having to actually face forced deportation. Fischer self-deported and even tried to renounce his American citizenship in 2004 after he was detained in Japan and faced deportation to the U.S. for traveling with an invalid passport. In the U.S., he was under indictment on charges of violating a ban on travel to Yugoslavia where he traveled in 1992, to play in a match against Boris Spassky. After earning $4 million for this, Fischer never returned to the U.S. for fear of arrest and imprisonment. "Bobby Fischer is sick and tired of how he has been treated by the U.S.for the past 12 years," said John Bosnitch, the head of the Free Bobby Fischer Committee back in 2004 according to Bloomberg. On January 17, 2008, Fischer died from degenerative renal failure at a hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, where he lived out his final years.

  • Dave Spector

You may not know Dave Spector but the Chicago native is a big celebrity in Japan, where he appears on television programs, commercials and dramas. Spector writes columns in Japanese magazines and has published books. Unlike other American celebrities who've tested their fame in Japan, Spector is able to absorb news from back home and express it in a way that engages the Japanese audience. In the spirit of Mitt Romney's new take in immigration, you could say that Spector "self-deported" to Japan in the 1980s as a producer for Ripley's Believe It or Not. Three decades later, Spector is still working hard and enchanting his fan base in Japan.

  • Terry Gilliam

Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame finalized his self-deportation from the U.S. when he renounced his American citizenship in 2008. Gilliam claimed his decision was fueled by the state of the American political arena. "It is absolutely frightening," Gilliam said of the political scene at the time, according to CBS News. "Homeland Security is just like [his film] 'Brazil's' Ministry of Information, because if your job is counter-terrorism, what do you need to keep in business? You need terrorists, and even if they aren't there, we may have to create new ones. It works very well." Still, Gilliam had other options when he renounced his U.S. citizenship. After all, he's had British citizenship since the 1960s. Flickr photo by Fran Petersson

  • David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff further cemented his status as a household name with his role as Mitch Buchannon in 1990's TV series Baywatch. A few years later, a leaked video of a drunk Hasselhoff brought him further notoriety. But truth be told, in the U.S., the Hoff, as he is often called, has remained at the apex of pop culture, primarily as fodder for comedians. But not in Germany. The Hoff's "self-deportation" to Europe turned out to be a great career move. In fact, Hasselhoff may be one of America's most popular exports there, where he's enjoyed a fruitful and stunningly popular singing career.

  • Nicole Scherzinger

Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls fame is known mostly in the U.S. as host of 'X Factor'. But in the UK, Scherzinger is widely recognized as a pop star, thanks to her "self deportation." In fact, the British singer Adele was knocked off the top spot in the U.K.'s billboard charts in March by Scherzinger, according to The Business Insider. Given rumors that Mariah Carey might be replacing her as host of the "X Factor" after only one season, Scherzinger might consider permanent "self-deportation" to the U.K.

  • 30 Seconds to Mars

Jaret Leto made a pretty big name for himself in the 90s for his role as Jordan Catalano in "My So Called Life." His band, however, "30 Seconds to Mars" had much better luck once they "self-deported." They've been recognized multiple times at the MTV Europe Music Awards and are very popular in Australia. Another instance where "self deportation" proved a good career move.

I guess a better term would be "self repatriation" to their country of origin.

Most people agree that the folks that seem to have appointed themselves as the "typo police" are pretty pathetic, if not amusing, but to make an entire story out of the verbal equalivalent of a typo was, well, very entertaining anyway.

"Self Deportation" has basically been occurring in Arizona over the last several years, as the illegals flee to California.

Arizona is the better for it, as are the traitors in California who hire illegals and now have a new supply to exploit.

Been advocating for years now, tossing Arizona out of the USA, building a wall around it and deporting all the undocumented there, PLUS all the criminal filth from the dubya "administration."

I advocate for returning the AZ territory to the Native Americans as partial reparations for the harm done to them by "settlers", Immigrants from Europe" and their ancestors.

Maricopa can become the new *white man's* reservation. . Those who choose to stay can be relocated by a "removal order" to the new *white people* reservation. Let's name it Sun City Reservation ;-)

I'm not sure but there's a theory that say Arizona was not purchased to Mexico, Mexico just loaned the state for 200 years.

True or not, I feel some sense of truth because of the behavior of some people. (Too scared)

It just means that employers will have to use the "E-Verify" system and only hire those who pass. This should not be a big problem. Firearms retailers must do a federally mandated "call-in" check before they may sell anyone a firearm, it usually takes around 5 minutes at most. Why not do the same for employers?

The Chamber of Commerce killed that initiative the last time around because they feared their members wouldn't be able to hire cheap undocumented labor.

You got that right. e-verify all current employees and all future employees. If any current or future employee fails, then give them due process rights to prove his/her right to work. This will result in self-deportation of illegals and the freeing up of jobs to millions of Americans whose jobs the illegals have stolen.

The only way to truly stop illegal immigration is to remove all the incentives that allow illegal females to come to the US and breed for free. Thats what starts the spiral of free goods and services for the child that the family rides too. Simple as that.

You're making racial stereotypes with no factual evidence. More Anglos are on welfare than Latinos or blacks and Latinas don't "breed" they're not animals. They come here, live their lives, and start families like most people do. There are millions of undocumented people here with skills and college degrees and if you're so racist you'd rather see them leave our country and take their skills somewhere else, than you're not doing anything to help America.

How many millions of dollars are spent a year in free prenatal and maternity care for anchor children and than for social services afterward? Millions. Its not a sterotype I see it every day my newspaper is full of the stories too. See I live in a Sanctuary City.

Romney no more created the term self deportation than Al Gore invented the internet. It is a viable term and there is good evidence in AZ, AL, GA, and SC that once enforcement replaced sanctuary policies, illegals left the state on their own or - self deported. If we had a comprehensive enforcement policy against illegal immigration, instead of relocating from AZ to CA, illegals would relocated from the U.S. back to their country of origin. The reason pro Amnesty advocates don't like this idea is because it blows up their "too costly to deport everyone" justification for allowing illegals to stay. Self deportation is not only a real word, but a great idea and what should be the goal of our national immigration enforcement policy.

I wish you would self-deport, you seem really mean.
01:09 PM on 01/25/2012
First, I can't deport because I'm already in my own country. Secondly, do you think its "mean" that illegals are taking resources away from taxpayers and U.S. citizens that deserve and are entitled to the benefits that are being provided to people who are living in this country illegally? You don't think its mean when are kids have limited school resources diverted, unemployed people can't get benefits, food stamps and medicaid runs out of money ALL because those dollars have been spent on illegal immigrants instead? THAT'S mean.
10:51 AM on 01/26/2012
What "self-deportation" really means is this: "We will make it so hard for you here that you will wish you'd never came."

I'm ok with that.

That's entirely appropriate. We make it hard for all sorts of people who choose to break the law. That's how laws are supposed to work- the consequences of breaking the law encourage people to abide by the law and provide us with an appropriate remedy when they don't abide by the law.

Do you support allowing Americans to choose which laws to obey and break with no consequences? Are you willing to end enforcement and consequences for people who violate laws against drunk driving, against assault, against child abuse, against violating civil rights of others?
10:06 PM on 01/24/2012
haha as pissed as I was to hear him even use this ridiculous term, it honestly made me laugh that he's so dumb. Oh and now he wants the Latino vote so he's saying he's willing to enact the DREAM act if it focuses only on letting people earn citizenship for military service and not for college. That is not going to earn him the Latino vote! If anything it's going to scare Latinos away and makes it more obvious just how racist he is, he'd rather Latinos die fighting wars they didn't start than earn their citizenship getting a college degree?! Totally ridiculous.

Agreed. At first I thought it was laughable, then I realized that it is exactly the Alabama policy. What Romney doesn't seem to understand, probably because he has no idea what real poverty is or what real suffering looks like, is that being poor and miserable in the US is still 10x better than poor and miserable in Honduras, or El Salvador, or even Mexico for that matter.

A person who has never had to wash their body with no running water, has never had to go an entire day with no food, or has never walked a mile in bare feet, has no idea what some of the immigrants that risk their lives to come here face in their home countries. Clueless. Absolutely clueless, along the lines of "if they have no bread, let them eat cake!"

I know, all these hateful racist Republicans have no idea what people go through and it baffles me that people could be so cruel to people who have so little and are just trying to make a better life for themselves as 99.9% of them are.

Keeping your excellent statement about differences in living conditions in mind, most people in Latin America are still better off than people in Haiti or parts of Africa.

Should we accept people based upon need or simply their ability to get here?
09:29 PM on 01/24/2012
Romney will learn that a policy of hatred is not a good one to live by, not a good one to teach by, and MOST DEFINITELY not a good one to win by. He is tough on poor laborers who take the worst jobs, but is as gentle as fine lace with the richest of the rich in America and even dares to fight for tax cuts that raise these elites on an even higher pedestal.

I swear these faux intellectual dingbats are just the gift that keeps on giving! They really need to get out of their mother's basement because this seems to be a source of utter amusement and bemusement. Self- deportation who ever heard such a nonsensical; word - he just had to have sucked that out of the air.

Romney has been talking about illegals self-deporting since 2001 so they obviously don't listen too well. But this is not just some term he sucked out of the air in a fit of malice and xenophobic aberration as the exploding heads club suggest..

Extract form USCIS publication March 2000

What Is the Status of an Alien Who Is Under a Final Order of Exclusion, Deportation, or Removal and Who Departs From the United States?

Such alien would be a "SELF-DEPORT" and would be subject to the inadmissibility provisions of section 212(a)(9) of the Act. This is true regardless of whether the alien obtained an Authorization for Parole of an Alien Into the United States (Form I-512) prior to departure....

Also it was in use in the courts - Gallo-Alvarez v Ashcroft 2001 - the defendant was determined to have self deported.

- So if Latino voters don't side with criminals who have illegally invaded the USA, are we out of touch as well? We're forced by the illegal alien lobby to choose illegality and ethnicity over what is right and best for the country, which is to obey the law.

Does that mean other ethnic groups get to choose based on their ethnicity too?

This is the path to failure and civil discord.

If they are unable to work, or obtain legal drivers licenses, or legal [not fake or stolen] SS numbers, the incentives to go home outweigh the incentives to stay here. Nothing complicated or mysterious, except for those who wish it to be that way.
